This comes in handy as I watched your swept back roughing gouge video and I wanted to give it a try. I got a high speed steel roughing gouge for a little over $20. The problem is it is too big for my wolverine or Tormek jigs so this will work great. I have my CBN wheels set up to use my Tormek jigs. What I learned here is to put the roughing gouge jig between the tool rest and the grinding wheel. Tormek has the jig on the other side of the tool rest and what I found for me is as I lift the handle to put the gouge to the wheel the spinning wheel pushed the gouge away and I got small facets on the edge. Maybe I was not doing it right but you made a lot of sense the way you did it . Thanks. I will give your method a try.

Very good advice all around. Since I worked in machine shops in a previous life, I'm very comfortable making and sharpening my own tools but this was still a huge help.

I've only been turning just under a year, if only if I had seen this fantastic video soon, I wouldn't brought my, grinder. I'll brought more wood for turning lol. It just proves you never to old to learn, and I've just turned 65. Glenn it's a video I'll watch again and again thank you.

I’ve never ever used my traditional tools I inherited with my ‘new to me’ lathe as, I couldn’t afford ‘any’ sharpening system. Hi there Glen I have been turning quite a while and up to now I’ve not found any sharpening system especially tormek what a price they are to get all the jigs!that really fits everything Thanks a million for your sharpening setup I have just got to get making one especially as i have a 406 lathe like yours and it won’t cost what a vary grind does either well done my friend bye for now Ron.

Nice one Glenn, I've got used to using your carbides but really should have a go with my traditional gouges again.

Great video what I like about your demo's you tell it as it is, explain what you are doing ( not like most demo's no explanations and you have learn what they are doing by music) thank you will keep watching.

Sehr gute Idee , auf die Befestigungsschrauben noch eine Flügelmutter geschweißt macht es noch einfacher . Ist das ein Nass oder Trockenschleifstein? Der Schliff dürfte mit einer CBN Schleifscheibe noch besser werden und etwas weniger Drehzahl vermeidet Funkenflug . Zum schnellen Nachschleifen oder sogar Umschleifen werde ich mir deine Idee nachbauen . Super Job !!!👍

I have an old walker tuner drill press that makes new drill presses look like garbage so these days I look for vintage gear for my shop.. Also throw a rag down on your ways while grinding stuff. grinding dust won't be good for the machine..(takes own advice, sometimes) Cheers and a handy tip, done that many times,,making handy mandrills and gluing on sandpaper..

I know you also meant to warn about the dangers of those sparks and that you should clean up all shavings around the lathe before attempting to sharpen your tools. You have recreated a slow speed grinder which is preferred over the cheap grinders.

Great video the finish off the tool you could start sanding at 400 grit.

Thanks for sharing this! Only thing I would be concerned about is the wear from your grinding wheel falling onto your lathe's pristine bed. I would put something there to collect that abrasive dust and protect the bed - especially when dressing the grinding wheel with a diamond dresser.
