Nice to watch an expert working. I'm sitting in my backyard nursing a few wounds acquired from a piece of cedar that flew off the lathe a few minutes ago. Hit my wrist, then chest, then off my face shield. Internal application of a couple of cold beers is helping.

I have never made something exactly as asked. That’s because the request comes from someone who doesn’t turn and they don’t understand what’s feasible and what will result in a good looking final product.

Another good lesson. A question. I sand up to 600 grit. Clean with meths, add sand n sealer. Dry and add wax. Why is there dirt after waxing? Adding wax too early, wrong tissue paper/cloth ? All my small pieces look dirty. Help please pleaseeeee. Beechwood the worse. I'm confused to what I'm doing wrong. Thank you.

Very nice project - I'm sure you wife will enjoy it. But the last minute substitution of the pre-made finial raises a question. If I understand correctly, the yew portion of the stand was slightly concave. The pre-made finial, however, did not have a mounting tenon, so you wiped some glue on the top of the yew, and pressed the finial into place. But that means that the actual gluing surface where the two parts joined together was very narrow - just the rim of the concave portion of the yew. How were you able to subsequently reshape the area where the oak and yew came together without cutting through that gluing surface?
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Louie, if you notice it went convex not concave in that area to avoid doing just that. Thanks for your input much appreciated.

Nice one Mike. I’m surprised she chose the oak myself, but I do like it better than what you intended to use. The colors were off for the yew. 2 questions: Did she approve the alternating hooks? Did she approve?

Hi Doug ... each to their own mate. Surprisingly she didn't even mention the hooks ... so I got away with it .... this time! 😉

@rontocknell5400 2 жыл бұрын
Ooooh! You are treading on very thin ice, my friend! Not only making a UNILATERAL decision about alternating the hooks (which, in my experience, is tantamount to mutiny) but also (and I'm guessing she hasn't seen the video yet... because it's still up) QUESTIONING YOUR WIFE'S CHOICE OF FINIAL AND OVERALL DESIGN. You might have negated all the brownie points you earned making it for her. Of course, I can safely say that I agree a taller, more elaborate finial in a contrasting wood would have been better... because she doesn't know where I live.
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 2 жыл бұрын
🤣🤣🤣🤣 it's amazing how brave we are ... from a distance eh Ron? Thanks for watching and the usual humorous missive mate.
@rontocknell5400
@rontocknell5400 2 жыл бұрын
On reflection, you could have argued that a taller finial would also serve as a 'ring post' to store rings. I don't know how much jewellery your wife wears... but, then again, the Queen has the largest and most valuable collection of jewellery in Europe... and she usually wears a dull green shooting jacket and a headscarf.
