Today's video:
Honestly, I just haven't been fully satisfied with the final finishes I've tried on any of my projects to date, be they natural oils, friction polishes (Shellawax), or even an epoxy finish. However, I recently came across another wood turner that uses Waterlox for most of their work (I could be wrong, but I believe this is most commonly used to finish hardwood flooring?). I ordered a small can online a few weeks back, just to give it a try, and I have to say, I'm quite pleased with the results! I applied two coats total, separated by 24 hours to allow for full curing, and it gave the bowl a hard, glossy finish that I am very pleased with! I'll definitely be trying this stuff out again on a few other things. What do you think?

This is one of the nicest wood epoxy projects ever! I really like the way the bamboo looks. Blue on the inside like you have it, and a super light tint of blue so you can still clearly see all the bamboo. Or maybe just varying degrees of the same blue (or any color) in the openings. That would be really pretty also.

Well, other than the potential for shards breaking off (which is why you should always be wearing a full face shield), it really isn't anymore dangerous than turning something round. I only do it because it both saves me time at the lathe and prolongs the life of my cutting tools

@formanwoodworking
@formanwoodworking Жыл бұрын
Thank you! And good question, I know they're not easy to find (most big lumber stores don't carry them). I was able to find a bamboo supplier in Toronto called Bamboo Toronto, and they specialize in bamboo and bamboo-related products. If I recall, they had bamboo as large as 4-5" in diameter and up to several meters long (the ones I use are just 1"). If you're looking for some for yourself, and you don't live near Toronto, I think they ship (don't quote me on that). Alternatively, you could search and see if there are any bamboo suppliers in your area.

Which color did you pour first or does it matter. I couldn't tell from the video because each time a color was poured, the other color was not present until the end. Just curious if it was easier to fill the bamboo first and then the outer space? Thanks
@formanwoodworking
@formanwoodworking Жыл бұрын
I started pouring inside of the bamboo first (the blue), and I was going to fill them all before moving onto the gold, but unfortunately, a couple of the bamboo shafts weren't as well glued down to the bottom as I'd hoped. A couple started leaking out the bottom, so to prevent the outer space from filling up entirely with blue resin, I started pouring the gold around the same time to keep them apart. Had that not happened, it probably doesn't matter which one you start pouring first.

Can I please ask you how long you put it in the vacuum chamber for?
@formanwoodworking
@formanwoodworking Жыл бұрын
Hi, Doug. That depends mostly on the resin's cure time. This was done with Alumilite's clear cast, which I believe is a 24 hour cure time, although that can be affected by air humidity and temperature. If I recall, I cast this in the spring, and my garage was likely quite cold at the time, which would have lengthened the cure time. The best method I've found for making sure it's cured before opening the pot is to leave any excess resin that I couldn't fit into the pour in the mixing cup. If that resin has cured, and is nice and hard, then the resin inside the pot will surely be cured as well. Hope that helps!!
