In this woodturning video I take a walnut kneecap (knot growover) and run into all kinds of problems. After finding all the inclusions and cracks I make a decide to fill them with a colored Calcite. So no epoxy this go around.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video it means a lot to me.

Calcite! First I've heard of that as a solution to wood turning problems. I love your sense of adventure, trying out alternatives to epoxy, which is why I just subscribed. Way to go!

Heal-overs can be really interesting and beautiful, but also a pain in the chisel. Never know just what you will find inside. Love the calcite, but I now use UV glue instead of C.A. for inlay. No long waiting for a deep crack to cure. Nicely done!
@VickiAndersonwoodturning
@VickiAndersonwoodturning 14 күн бұрын
So I have to ask what is the difference between UV Glue and UV Resin and what brands do you like? Also have you had any problems with the light penetrating through your inlays to cure the UV Glue. Thanks Valerie.
@valeriehenschel1590
@valeriehenschel1590 14 күн бұрын
@@VickiAndersonwoodturning UV Resin used as glue to hold inlay in place (same). Allows for layering so you can cure off deeper cracks that might show through. Sifting the calcite gives you smalls/powder to place deeper in crack where narrower. Then layer of large, then top fill with fines again. Cure each layer as you go. Also works great for filling groove, then turning away wood behind it. If working with two materials, you can glue feature item in place with the resin, then add second material around it. And the UV can be used as a top coat over something you do not want to hit with the chisel. I have not been fussy about the brand, just the price.

You could also mix the blue and purple calcite together, it would give you a blue violet with a lot of depth.

Try sprinkle baking soda in crack lightly blow it in and then put your CA, or take some styrofoam in a small jar and fill it with acetone, this can also be tinted
@VickiAndersonwoodturning
@VickiAndersonwoodturning 13 күн бұрын
I have used the baking soda and ca before, but have not used the styrofoam melted in acetone yet. I had seen videos on how to melt it and color several months ago. I might give that one a try sometime.

I’ve mentioned this to many wood turners, something that is obvious to me, not being a wood turner. When filling delicate areas and cracks with anything involving CA glue, yes wait for it to cure then, never, ever attack it with a gouge, no matter how softly you go. Always sand the excess down to level before you use a gouge on it. Even go as far as waiting until you have the finished shape that won’t require any further gouge or scraper attention, then make the repair and finish off with sanding.

@joeDebono. Can you please give a little more detail on the why sand first and not use a bowl gauge. Is it to do with scattering the glue? Help please.
@JoeDebono
@JoeDebono 9 күн бұрын
@@TurningStarkers - the gouge is too aggressive and will most likely tear at the excess material. Sandpaper will more gradually and more gently remove the excess.

Yeah I have a problem with remembering to take it off as you could see I didn’t remember until after halfway through turning the inside of this bowl. Maybe the tape idea will be something I can remember to do. Thanks for the advice.
