Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

I am always amazed with each piece I see carved. The way Nature creates the grains and colors. Each has it's own placement of grains, colors, bug holes, 'gouges', & other individual differences buried below the surface waiting for their exposure. The countless many never see the light of day. I love the simple elegance of the graining, it's warm colors, & the bonus textures you have revealed and tempered in this piece. Very nice work, very nice.

I haven't seen any elm trees around in England for over 50 years! That piece must have been hiding in a cave somewhere. That shape is almost a traditional chinese vase shape. As you say, the spalting and grain are outstanding. Super finish! I think the finish is the most arduous part! My stuff usually ends up a bit ''rustic''! 😊👍.
@HarrySmithWoodturning
@HarrySmithWoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yes it's such a shame that we have lost most of the mature elm trees. I do still see the occasional elm tree that must have a resistance to the feared Dutch elm disease. I end up spending hours on the finishing phase, it's the most important part 😄👍
@niklar55
@niklar55 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarrySmithWoodturning I don't think the few remaining Elm's are necessarily resistant. From those I've seen reports of, they were just too isolated and far away from infected trees for the bugs that carry the disease to reach them. In my home town there was a long avenue of elm trees that were many hundreds of years old. They ALL died. That's the problem with 'monoculture'. Finishing, like I said, _arduous!_ I don't have to sell my bowls to make a living, I just give them to relatives, or friends. That's one small luxury of being retired.😁! .

Oh my gosh, what a beautiful piece. I absolutely love the finished size and shape. I haven't seen anybody do that shape before and i'm so glad that you did. Now to go and find some more. Well done.
