People often ask me how long it takes to make a bowl... it's hard for them to understand just how long it takes if you make large pieces. There is also the need for the real estate to have these all dry out in a controlled environment in your house/shed, to my wife's chagrin. Kent, I've never been successfull with burnishing with steel wool. I have the same finish as you, when I use the wool it ALWAYS leaves steel debris in the end grain no matter to what grit I sand do (320/400/600). I've switched to scotchbrite pads for all my burnishing needs. The white pad is their finest grit equivalent to 1000. It's been a game changer for me.

Kent, I really enjoyed this video. Twice turning is how I've done about half of my bowls but the Tried & True Original Finish is new. Looking forward to giving that stuff a test run on a piece of black walnut I have in my shop. Thanks for your work in putting these videos together and sharing your knowledge.

I just love the way you explain things. If you're not a complete fool, your videos will make it clear how things are done. I've learned the basics from Eddie Castel's videos, few years ago, but your videos taught me what I know now. I haven't attended your courses, yet. Mostly due to my own financial situation. The prices are reasonable, but I just don't have the extra money. I have learned from somewhere that if the chips are hot, that they burn your hand, then the rpm in the lathe is too high. Is this true or do dry wood shavings heat up in general? Many times I have wanted more rpm, but the shavings burn my hand

Thank you kindly, JS! Lathe speed can make hot chips, but dry wood it more of a factor.

I'm new to turning. Probably only finished about a dozen bowls. I only learned twice turning so it's all I know how to do. I'm currently working on my 8th bowl that's over 14 inches X 6 inch deep. The other 4 are a set of cereal bowls. So large twice turned bowls are what I find fun. Still have a lot to learn and I learn a lot of it here on your channel.

Love the twice turned bowl and review of techniques. I also use a glove for my left hand as you have pointed out hot shavings and sharp pieces coming off the bowl. You have mentioned you use a face shield and duct mask while turning. Can you show a brief clip of yourself wearing the safety apparatus in one of your next videos?

That's a nice-looking bowl. I have twice-turned some bowls and made the mistake of getting the bowl a little too thin the first time around - it definitely causes problems when you finish the bowl. I also like using the 0000 steel wool. Looking forward to your next video Your neighbor up the road ...

I love the bowl. I was glad to find out that the cracks I thought I saw in the inside bottom of the bowl were actually spalting lines! Quick question about tenons: My chuck does not have a dovetail on the jaws. They have a couple of raised ridges near the outside edge, both inside and outside. I was watching a different bowl video, not sure who it was, but they said that if we don't have dovetail jaws that we should cut a different profile, but I don't remember what that profile was. Should it just be a straight cylinder? Or does it need an undercut? I'm hoping you can help. Thanks!
@TurnAWoodBowl

Steve, Thank you for writing and sharing! Those are serrated jaws. Some people can use them without trouble. They have never been good to me. Possible cutting a small notch at the base of the tenon would give the grooves a home?

I love your videos -- keeps me in the woodshop. What do you think about the practice that seemingly more and more KZfaq turners are doing by putting 5 minute epoxy (usually with some color added) into cracks in an effort to stop the crack from spreading? Is that any better, or worse, than wood glue and saw dust?
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 8 ай бұрын
Thank you kindly! 5-min epoxy works fine and is good if you want an accent. If you want to hide a spot, the glue and shavings works great too. Happy Turning!
