Woodturned cherry log. From green wood to finished bowl fast...
@Duka Heritage released a SpeedBowl challenge, • Woodturning - SpeedBow...
NOTE: This video is not instructional, it is for entertainment purposes only. In this video I do not intend to encourage turning fast or in an unsafe or rushed manor but merely to show how efficiency in technique, as in all skills, reduces the time taken to perform a task.

You must decide for yourself what level of risk you are willing to tolerate. Here is a link to the American Association of Woodturners "Safety Guidebook for Woodturners" that I encourage all turners or aspiring turners to read and follow:

@@kimseyjustkimsey5256 I am in Upstate NY. The wood was wet with straight grain, no knots and no insects so my gouge could take big cuts. I think I was below 1000 rpm the whole time. I turned it in 30 mins and then spent the same or more sanding, I want to get a better finish straight from the gouge, but am struggling, especially on the inside of my thinner bowls as the wood moves to much. Rob Brandt Woodturning I have a little trouble on the inside of the bowls with the gouge bouncing around, Hoping I can get cleaner cuts to, and most the time after I sharpen the gouge I get bad catches 😬 this past weekend I almost had a bowl finished, went to sharpen to get a clean cut also the wood did have some defects crack lines in it already, I was being extra careful and as soon as the chisel made contact with the bowl, it catches 😬 I heard a few loud noises and just stood there for a moment 😣 Hopefully I can epoxy it and fix it, went into 3 pieces

@@kimseyjustkimsey5256 There is supposed to be a sharpening profile for finishing the bottom of bowls which allows one to ride the bevel all the way down...I haven't got it right yet but getting better. I am experimenting with a negative rake scraper and round carbide that I tilt for a sheer cut...feels like cheating though. :)

Rob. Nice little turn and a good result. However, I don't understand this concept of speed turning. Safety is a primary concern in this hobby, and hurrying to do something as fast as you can is surely not the positive message that you want to send to those who are trying to learn from your more experienced efforts, is it? In addition, most can turn a bowl with a little practice, but it is the taking of one's time and paying careful attention to all the little details that produces the best and safest result. Pardon my criticism but all comments count right? :) Good luck with your channel.
@RobBrandtWoodturning

Andrew I agree with everything that you say. Safety in turning, and indeed any form of woodworking is important. I do not make these videos as instructional, they are for entertainment puposes only. This video is not meant to encourage turning fast or in an unsafe manor but to show how efficiency in technique, as in all skills, reduces the time taken to perform a task. It also answers the question, "How long does it take to make a bowl". Thank you very much for the comment, Keep safe, Rob

Hi Bob, I use the Record Power SC4 chuck, because I have it, with the Cole Jaws amzn.to/39qTonE but you should be able to get Cole jaws for whichever chuck you have. Here is a link to the Record Power SC3 chuck ( amzn.to/2D2OsJI ) if you want to check it out. The links are not necessarily the cheapest, but should give you an idea of the product. The Record Power and Nova chucks use interchangeable jaws. If you have the cash and are starting from scratch then you won't go far wrong, in my opinion, with a Oneway or a Vicmarc chuck and jaws to suit your lathe. I hope that is helpful. Keep safe, Rob.

GREAT PROJECT. Rob, you mentioned you used a microwave to dry the bowl. Can you tell explain the specifics of the drying? Also, did you use a moisture meter or a scale? I have some green wood I'm going to turn soon. Thanks
@RobBrandtWoodturning
@RobBrandtWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
I warm up the rough turned bowl, feels warm but not so hot that it is uncomfortable to touch, then let it cool down and repeat. I immediately saw small checks starting, so theorized that even in microwave drying it was important to slow down loss from end grain. I then painted the whole bowl with Anchorseal 2 and continued the microwave cycling. I have only done two bowls like this. The first air dried for two months and faired better than the one in this video, which had two small cracks that formed..l should probably make a video if there is interest. I used weight and moisture meter.
@boooshes
@boooshes 4 жыл бұрын
@@RobBrandtWoodturning Rob, you might also try a method I have used for bowls and for spoons. In order to keep the outer fibers of the wood at high moisture content while drying, put the bowl in a plastic zip.lock bag. Heat until steam forms. Remove and cool, then pour off the water that condences. Close it up and repeat. The steam in the air surrounding the wood keeps the outer fibers wet while you are still driving out water from the wood. Doing this in steps with patience usually gets me good results. Best of luck. Joel.
