Bowl was super wobbly on my lathe, throughout most of the turning for two reasons - first because i turned the rough cut log without much trimming, and second, it had a really nice top curve with the bark that i wanted to incorporate into the finished bowl…but that meant dealing with this hideous wobble when finishing both the outside and the inside of the piece!!! Had to go over sections more than i would have otherwise because of that.
means i probably need to consider bolting my lathe down to the floor ;)
after all that, i think it turned out really nice.
let me know: what do you think? let me know in a comment.
Wood is live edge walnut, turned on Grizley lathe.
Sanded down to 800 grit and finished inside and out with Dr. Kirk’s Scratch Free.
food safe finish and look great.

Yes, you should secure the lathe...it is dangerous...if it slides to the edge and you instantly try to prevent it from falling, you could suffer severe injury. Also it would be a shame to ruin a nearly finnished product.

If you don't wanna cut it balanced, you could add temporary weight to the lighter side to stop the whole thing jumping around.

that’s a good thought! how’d you think it would work best without also possibly ruining the bark/live edge?

Yet another turner who thinks that they are good enough to get away with not speaking, it makes for a rather dreary video, even the really talented tuners normally describe what tools, finishes and techniques they are using .

Lol ….not at all, i think my voice sounds very annoying, and i’d probably lose more people who’d then prefer to not hear me at all…the very talented turners take time to talk about what they do because they really know what they’re doing, and can teach others. i’m still learning ;)

do you have a shape in mind or do you just like taking off wood? the proportions just aren't right. the base is way to small and it looks top heavy. the wood grain and color looks great, but the shape is just a waste of wood.. sorry but to me, it's just ugly..
