OMG, Kent, this is JIT - a friend had a GIANT black walnut tree chopped down two years+ ago and gave me a trunk part full of cracks. I wasn't sure what to do and lucky me, came upon this video. Now I see it as a totally different prospect. Let's see what I turn with it. Thanks for the inspirations!

Kent, I'm at the 12:15 mark in the video. While I'm sure there is much good stuff to come, I want to say thanks for this segment. I have a log outside that's been sitting for months because I didn't want to throw it away but how to use it just didn't jump to mind. Your chalk work and explanation were excellent and I'm sure I'll bring it in and mark it up, though I'll have to ask a granddaughter for a piece of chalk. This 12 minutes was really helpful!

Chet Bisno, Kent, as always you manage to relay numerous points that most demonstrators neglect. Lathe turning speed, specific tool angles and safetly tips are of particular value. However, also noted the lack of light over the bandsaw early. That degraded an otherwise excellent presentation. Keep them coming.

That would be a cheap way to get a lot of smaller lumber to glue up and make segmented turnings as well. I might have to stop by a local firewood and look through the lumber. A chain saw and small bandsaw you could turn a lot of waste wood into small lumber. I know Aromatic cedar is gorgeous lumber and around these parts of the wood , /these farmers will pay you to take them down and dispose of them.

I don't think seeing some cracking is all that terrible. As long as they're glued and won't be opening up any more I think they give the piece some character. It's wood after all, an imperfect medium. You could turn resin or metal to ensure an entirely crack free bowl. I think this is a beautiful piece salvaged from a potential piece of firewood.

Rubbish!! Just as bad as using that beautiful piece of wood as firewood. Why not treat it with some kind of adhesive, epoxy even before turning it. Or break up the pieces according to the cracks; glue them up in whichever way to preserve it's shape and turn as a whole piece. What a waste.

Merry Christmas, Kent. Thanks for another useful video. I'm a long time woodworker, retired for a bit over 2 years, and a fairly new turner, although I have dabbled in turning here and there through the years. I have learned, however, that turning is addictive once one jumps in fully, and lathe "necessities" are a real rabbit hole. My platform is a 66 year old Shopsmith. Although it can turn a 16" blank, 8-10" is really more practical due to its low speed of 750rpm. My next venture into the rabbit hole is to purchase Shopsmith's dedicated speed reducer, which will reduce the low end to just 100rpm - allowing me to turn some of the large Beech and Sycamore blanks I've recently accumulated. Your glue tip is a variation of a technique I've used in my other obsession, building musical instruments. In my case, I use CA to flood the crack, then quickly sand it with black oxide wet/dry paper. It takes just a few seconds, and the crack will be stabilized and smooth to the touch. I've used the technique on several bowls. Just last week, I grabbed a small half-log of White Ash from our firewood pile and turned a live edge dish about 8" long. The cracks are visible but smooth to the touch, giving the piece a bit of charm, at least to my eyes. It's going to be a Christmas gift for a family member who has been eyeing some of my small bowls. I wish I'd figured out years ago how much fun woodturning is.

I also use an old shopsmith with the speed reducer, Tony. I can confirm it's worth the price. Much nicer to have the wider array of speeds available, and it feels a lot safer on larger things. Even 8" is gonna get that shopsmith walking all over the shop/patio without the speed reducer.

Been absent for a long time but I do love this video & the brilliant way you explained how to salvage such a 'poor looking' piece of wood. The resultant bowl from this first piece of salvaged wood is excellent. Love the way you camouflaged the cracks that were remaining using wood glue & sanding dust as opposed to just using CA glue. Excellent job, thanks for sharing this. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

So I started turning with a 100$ beginner 5 piece set that had a 3/8 bowl gouge from m2 steel and doing a little oak bowl from a cut off was a rough time, I had to sharpen every 5 minutes if not less. But then I got a premium cryo m42 steel 1/2 bowl gouge and it is a whole different story. I sharpen it every 20-30 minutes even turning oak(I do turn it greenish so that helps)

I have filled cracks with CA glue and sawdust found on the lathe, I may experiment with the wood glue and sanding trick.

Could you mount the whole blank and turn a large end grain bowl? Appreciate the large crack could be filled prior to turning.

Of course! You would need to glue as you go to prevent chunks from possibly flying. Happy Turning!

In glue and dust we place our trust, if that won’t do then putty must. A quote from my dear father who is no longer with us.
