Hello Phil. Lar from 🇨🇦. Glad i stopped by today to watch you turn this BEAUTIFUL bowl. I really like how the finish turned out. Just a very nice shine and the bark looks very nice as well. As usual, another educational and entertaining video. Thanks for all you do for your fans.

You make me so jealous sometimes. Lol I have been turning now for about two months, everyday. I'm in love. I have made two 55 gal garbage cans of sawdust. 😅 not much else😢😢 haha you make it look so easy, thank you for you tutelage and expertise in your turning. I'm 72 and wanted to do this all my life. But have been too busy in life to do it. Ha. I have made a few mushrooms and candel holders but as of yet unable to successfully make a bowl 🥣. They still seem to be still be just out of my reach. I continue to blow out the sides. ( In a terrible way)😢 lol keep up your wonderful work, you inspire me. Respectfully Lary

I love reading this comment, Lary. Not because you have yet to turn a bowl but because of your determination to keep trying. I may make it look easy but I can tell you, in the beginning, I had wood flying everywhere! Huge catches, I even broke the banjo on my old Delta lathe from having the gouge slam down hard on the tool rest. I nearly gave up! Then one day, it all just came together. All that practice just worked. Now it feels so natural to me, I just can't believe it. I've got a few years on you so, don't let that get you down. You've got this! 😄

Beautiful!! You won't believe what happened to me this week, my neighbor cut down his holly tree and he saved me 8 pieces. I Anchor sealed it because it is literally dripping sap but after watching you video I can hardly wait until next year to turn some of it all the pieces I have are very similar to what you just turned. But it gets better I had another neighbor cut his avocado tree down and have 4 pieces of that for next year - great video thank you for sharing!!

Howdy, Tom! Thank you so much! Once you start turning the natural stuff it's really hard to go back. I've found full round, plain bowls very intimidating because they depend on ME for design rather than just going with what mother nature had in mind. Best wishes for successful turnings! Phil

As always when I send you a piece of wood and then have the wonderful opportunity to not only watch you turn it, but also get to hear (and this is more important to me) *why* you turned it a particular shape, I have to say: Thank YOU, sir! for giving back so freely! I can't help but send you more! (and I shall! oh, yes, I truly shall. still down-sizing frantically!) By the way, this holly tree's trunk is another close-to-home find that has it's own story. Would be happy to share that story should anyone be interested.

Thank You Phil...I like the closer camera work, I even jumped at about 5:15. Also like rolling the top over, gives it a softer look. And NO Phil YOU are NOT a "big stupid"!!! You are a skilled expert showing US dummies how a pro turns!!!!!!...Your 5/8" bowl gouge looks shorter. Guess that sharpening has taken it toll. Excellent show today Phil, I really enjoyed it...Thank You Calmwood Creations ...tm.

Howdy Phil That a nice piece ...so smooth .... I never turned Holly ....You say it is pretty hard .... I thought sure it was going vibrate a lot when you used that number 2 inside tool , I have been planning on making a set of those tools ....but to many other things I am doing ....making a sled for the table saw . I kept on looking at how smooooooth it is ....impressive....good job....so nice keep on turnin'

Well, hard might not be the right choice of words, Bruce. Tight grained and firm is more like it. It actually turned quite well as long as my gouge was sharp. Ohhh, a table saw sled is sooo handy, you'll love it! Thank you, my friend! Phil

Nice bowl! I like the shape. Holly doesn't have much grain, but it finishes so beautifully to a mirror shine, so it is great when you want to focus more on form than flash. I've really enjoyed turning it, but unless you have connections to an urban arborist (or people who send you wood in the mail!) it's impossible to find. Thanks to Dave and Tuffy and the others who keep you supplied so you can spend your time making great videos instead of hunting down wood.

Holly Cow Phil that is one great piece of wood. The shape is really nice. Having it curve back in at the top really gave the perfect look with the live edge. That is a stunning design! Congratulations on turning a Holly bowl. I only tried once and it disintegrated beforre could complete it, I had taken two pieces into the Craft Centre Alan the owner had one on one lathe and I had the other on the other lathe, Alan was a very good wood turner and finished his bowl, I was still working away when it blew up, the one and only time it happened to me. Holly is a beautiful creamy colour and looks good turned but after that I gave up on the idea of being a full time wood turner, realised I just wasnt proficient enough.

Here's the rest of the story : Early spring of '16 I was recuperating from a miserable bout with pneumonia and wasn't getting around very well. One morning I heard chainsaws in the neighborhood so got dressed and hobbled down to the corner, then to the other corner lot to see what was happening. There was a tree removal crew just beginning to fell the beautiful dogwood in the side yard. I chatted up one of the guys about chances of getting some dogwood! He called his boss over who said, "Sure! How much do you want and how will you cart it away? Oh, and do you want any of the holly in the back?" The dogwood trunk was about 9" diam., the holly was nearly 14" with two big crown crotches, one above the other. BIG! TALL! WOW! Cutting it short: I went home and got the pickup, parked it at the curb where the crew boss directed and went home to get breakfast and coffee. Boss man rang the doorbell and said, "All done! Come and get it!" The bed of my Nissan Frontier was FULL! of rounds about 16" long. The piece I sent Phil was a section of a branch above the top crotch. What a haul! Took me less than a minute to walk from home to where the trees were felled! How cool is that? Oh, yeah-- I wore out my electric chainsaw on that pile and had to purchase a new one, gas-powered Stihl. I've only got a couple pieces left. You did that one proud!

Well darn that's better than the truck load of Black Locust I got. Mine was 4 blocks away. Sheesh all the diesel and burned getting it. Still some there. But way to big for me. You did good Dave! Gary

My biggest hual to date was the Norwegian maple from just behind our garage. The crew guys cut rounds to my specs and humped them all over the back fence. All I had to do was roll them away. Left the trunk butt on the bare ground to spalt. Still have to slice it up.
