Very nice Mike. I use a tool rest as a reference point for alignment between centers. Set it up where it doesn't hit and put a piece of tape on it. Like you say, many ways. i just turned a very difficult one. Video coming out tonite, take a look. Take care, Larry

You are so lucky to have so many types of beautiful wood to play with. The C Wax made the already beautiful grain pop very nicely. Thanks for the step by step set up procedure, very helpful. You get an official "Atta Boy" on this one Mike.

Hi Gil, and thank you. I have been very fortunate over the years to "acquire" some lovely pieces of wood, most of it is as a result of being tipped of by friends in my village that trees are being felled. Take care Mike

Great video Mike. I haven't turned a natural edge bowl for quite a while so that was a great refresher. Having said that I normally don't get much wood turning during March and April as I'm normally working in my veggie plot. However, we've had such a bad winter I've been confined to my workshop. I was talking to another old gardener a few days ago and he quoted me this old saying: "If by April,the bees are still in their hives, It's the mark of a good season to grow some chives" Best.... Alan.
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Alan, what a terrible torture it must be to "have" to go into the workshop!! ;) Great quote too, but alas the feared " Amazonian Chive Beetle" has reared its ugly head in these parts, so my chive farming has taken a huge hit - could always start growing tatties I suppose .. lol Take care mate, and always a pleasure. Hell Mike, You've done it again! Another project right on cue for me.( Similar turning histories since ca. 2010). My natural edge bowls have been in Sycamore, just treated with Danish Oil as you have done. Quite pleasing. Perfectly round branch wood also gives good natural edged feet to tall vessels. I now have logs of Cedar and Japanese Pagoda wood (1 soft and 1 very hard) to attempt your way. Recently I investigated laminated Beech worktop with wax colouring, with similar results to yours. The wood strips gave "interesting" colour distribution. Dried out light tan shoe polish gave an excellent sheen and pleasant fragrance, and Wife positively approved; awarding the bowl space on the sideboard. No voids between laminates, but tool quickly blunted. Bernard.

Mike, I enjoyed your video. I start the outside just like you do until I reach the lowest part of the bark. Then, I cut from the bark toward the base/foot until I get below the lowest part of the bark on the outside. This tend to make it easier to keep the bark from being pried off. There is nothing wrong with the way you do it. As you said there are many ways of doing it.
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 6 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video Marshall. I agree with what you say, on this piece I was confident that the bark was solid, however I use the same method as you when the bark appears to be less stable. Take care Mike

Mike, you had a nicely regular, uniform block. Mine are typically not so pretty to start with. So, I wait to balance until I have a complete cut circle against the bark edge. Then I use the lower bark edge to balance one way and the upper bark edge to balance the other way. Great job Alan

Just come across this Mike. A lovely project and it was explained and demonstrated very clearly. I'll certainly be giving this a go! A concern - when removing the 'nub' end of the foot with your chisel your left hand strayed into the danger zone in front of it - in the direct line of fire! I know to my cost the dangers of not keeping both hands behind the cutting edge only too well! Stay safe Mike, find another way of holding the work.

A lovely looking bowl Mike. I know you’re not really one for colouring but I’ve had some nice effects from stained ash with liming wax. Martins Ti wax would do the trick nicely, or even some of the metallic waxes would look good. Cheers Ben

Thanks Ben, I think these "embellishers" are great in certain scenarios, but have to say that the majority of the time I like it natural. I know I'm a boring old fart! ;) Take care, and thanks for watching Cheers Mike

Great job turning there Mike. I recently got some Ash from a friend and was wondering what i could go with some of it. I already have a lot of bowls rough turned and seasoning. I have never tried to turn a natural edge bowl. I just might give it a go. Thanks

Beautiful work Mike. What sort of moisture content is preferable for natural edge work? New turner here
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Michael, if you dont want much movement I would suggest around 8% moisture content, but "wetter" is fun to turn and can give some pleasing results after movement has stopped. Cheers Mike
