I'm a newbie, and I don't understand why turners will take all the knocking of turning a square into a round. Wouldn't it be easier to cut off the corners on a table or band saw so you startvwith an octogon shape rather thsn a swuare? Inreally like the esthetics of the bowl shape you chose. The result is really nice.

You got there before me. I'm a dedicated hobby woodturner and was first introduced to the craft while at school many years ago. Probably because tools of weren't such high quality then we had to first take the corners off with a large block plane thereby making it octagonal. I still do it today using the bandsaw and it only takes a minute and makes the piece easier to turn. I can't understand why woodturners today don't practice that method. I'm in no way taking away from the piece as it's a stunner.
@JackMackWoodturning

I have over ten years experience at the lathe and my bandsaw isn’t set up correctly to make these cuts. Overall it is faster and safer for me to use the lathe. I think you guys will like my latest vid. You could win some great gear to help you. 😊👍🏻 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b6lgpMKHscDWmJc.html

Spalted wood looks great. It looked like (with the scratch lines in sanding) looks like it was a bit soft and the movement of the wood it deformed a little. But if you are accepting the material and it's unique quirks you can appreciate its inherent bueaty. It looks great! Thanks for sharing.

This means that my back catalog of videos is no longer getting views and the channel as stands can no longer be sustained. In hope of pulling this back around I’m reaching out to all you guys who I know to be loyal viewers and asking for as much engagement as possible with my past and upcoming videos. This means watching the videos through from start to finish without skipping, pressing the like button, engaging with comments and making sure you have pressed the bell icon when you subscribe. Sharing on social media or with friends via WhatsApp, or letting my playlists run through (for the dog to watch while your at work 😉). For those of you who don’t know, my new video’s are always on a Friday at 12:00PM GMT. It’s been great fun making these videos for you all and I still have many fresh and exciting ideas to share with you. Hopefully with your help we can get past this! Thanks in advance for the support. What have you been restoring lately?
@fiberotter
@fiberotter Жыл бұрын
Nothing the past couple of years, but the last piece I restored was a antique Hoosier Cabinet. Those that were used in kitchens before modern cabinets and containers. What is up this year now that it is getting warm, is 2 chairs of my grandmothers'' that are aprox 1940 or 50. I am going to work up to the family pie safe built in the 1870's. I know it belonged to my gr grandparents, but maybe originally gr-gr grandparents. I have a long list because if family doesn't want their family antiques anymore, they offer them to me and I take them. I love old pieces.

Hey Yoda. A change in the KZfaq algorithm seems to have reset the history on my entire channel. Jack.

@@JackMackWoodturning I mostly work with found wood. Spalted or stained crotch’s. I tend to “store” the wood exposed to the weather and here in Florida wood can rot quickly. Some of the wood has gone too far and gets soft. In that case epoxy castings works for me, but I don’t do much of that.

@@JackMackWoodturning It is very lovely. My family's been here since the 1840's, and it's hard to imagine calling anywhere else 'home'. Although, unlike what I've heard of the series, my family has (for the most part, anyway) managed to stay on the right side of the law. :)
