Woodturning Lidded Cherry Ebonized Wood Bowl Video
In this Start-to-Finish woodturning video, I will share with you how I turned this lidded black cherry bowl and how I ebonized the surface before applying a finish coat of Tried and True Danish Oil.
Adding a lid to a bowl can be a challenge because the lid needs to fit the bowl very precisely. Matching a lid to a bowl also requires that the wood is properly dry so it does not deform after turning.
I initially rough turned this cherry wood bowl blank several months ago and let it dry, or equalize. The reason for letting this dry is so that the final turned wood bowl and lid won't continue to warp or reshape. We want the lid to fit and seat properly to the bowl.

Extremely nice. I made a few lids a long time ago in the the '60s. Not sure how I did it but the knob was part of the lid and I used construction paper to separate the lid from the sacrificial wood attached to the face plate. Didn't know that chucks existed back then

My older sisters' birthday is coming up later this month, the bowl you just made is exactly what I'm going to try. I didn't have a thick enough blank to do the job so I glued two bowl blanks together. My experience lever might be tested here but faint heart never won fair lady. I just hope I can make the saying fit the situation.

Well the small turning club I joined monthly project is due Saturday brings me here. We are supposed to make a lidded box. I am a newbie but with your excellent teaching it sure lessens the learning curve a bit with your concise instructions. I got the pecan blank turned into a a hollow bowlish shape and now ready for the lid. With a little luck and some chops in my face I’ll get it done tomorrow. Thanks again Ken!

I am very impressed with the design and workmanship of the bowl. Even more impressed with your teaching technique. My wife’s favorite bowl is one I made from apiece of construction lumber very early in my wood turning life. It is essentially the same design but crude. Now I am inspired to make her a more elegant one.

This is an Awesome amount of information. I am Very interested using these techniques in a segmented project. Kent. You’re a good teacher (not all turners are). I enjoyed watching the process, but all the more because you were teaching and explaining as you went. Yup. I AM inspired to turn a lidded bowl or box AND doing them in different hues, as you did. Coming up for me will be a figured maple bowl with an African Blackwood rim, and maybe a thin layer of cherry between.

Love the shape. I was hoping you would show how you did the parting cut before you let the blank dry as doing it with a parting tool is one you said to avoid (and one where I had a bad experience). Do you happen to have any video of that step. I’m curious on whether you did it as a peeling cut where you ride the bevel or more of a scraping cut.

Great video... I have some black cherry trees lying in the field behind my house - they came down in a wind storm last winter. I've already limbed one of them and I'm getting ready to buck it up and put it on a pallet and under a tarp until spring.

Sounds like a great plan. You might want to split them length wise and remove the pith area to reduce stress as well. I'd cut the lengths a bit longer than the internal blanks also. That way you can trim off end, if cracks form and still have a clean bowl blank inside. All the best to you!

Hi Kent. Beautiful piece, as always. I made a few lidded boxes from beech branches, end-to-end grain. (Split the branch, dried to avoid cracks and joint with epoxy to get a blank). Turned with the spindle gouge. Turned out nice. And did a lidded bowl once from a Y-branch, wide enough to show just a bit of the natural edge. I find pieces with a lid very satisfying to make and see, yours is inspirational. Thank you!

Wonderful project that inspires me to make a lidded bowl. The complimentary shapes of the bowl and knob work well. Your close-up photography is terrific. Focus, composition and lighting are spot on. It looks like it was shot in a studio and it really demonstrates your techniques and dialog. I will check out your sanding video; that's an area I need improvement.

Beautiful bowl - I initially thought it would be a shame to ebonise such detailed cherry grain, but on seeing the end result it looks awesome! So I was given two spherical burls from a downed cherry tree - still very green. I’m considering making a lidded bowl with the biggest one and maybe a pot with the smaller. I only have a midi lathe with a 12” swing so it should be fun - never turned a burl so I’m excited! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience!

Loved it, Kent, thank you. I tried a small laburnam box recently where I wish I’d heard and fully appreciated then your comment that it’s double the cut, so the lid is loose and moves far too much. I’m now going to try the lidded bowl and stop frequently to try the fit, at the risk of irritating myself by stopping over and over! Thanks and best (from Guildford, UK) Hugh

Very nice project! I was working on something similar recently; I got the lid too thin and had a large chunk fly off. I was able to salvage the bowl! Thanks for the video.

I have easy wood tools but am trying to learn the ins and outs of traditional tools. I watched this video, went to my shop and use a 3/8" bowl gouge to turn the inside of a bowl that was on my lathe. Obviously, I've a very long way to go, but this is the first time I have truly felt comfortable with that tool in my hands. And no catches. Thanks.

Very nice work, and interesting and useful video on the techniques. Personally I prefer just having the ebonized knob but would have left the bowl natural, but that's just me and I can see why you tried it like this as it does look pretty good.

Hi kent Love this video I can't wait to try it and make by 1st lidded bowl. As most of the trees did I'll be turning will be Aspen or pine I was wondering if you had any experience with these 2 trees. Pros and cons about them. Aspen seems to be a very soft wood And we have lots of access to free Aspen wood As I live in a national forests I can collect Them for almost free. I'm still in the beginning stages and still learning a friend of mine has been turning would for years and he does quite well selling Them. And hes been a good teacher but you should always learn for multiple people as they can give you insight in something someone could just not explain to you That clicks. In hence why I watch your videos. So any help is always appreciated

Sounds like a good plan. I have not turned aspen, but I know it can look beautiful. You also have many options for finishing and coloring aspen. Be sure the wood is dry or equalized before turning a lidded piece. See my microwave drying video for more details. Happy Turning!

Excellent instructional video and as usual a great finished product. What’s your take on a vacuum chuck? I haven’t seen you use one yet.

Vacuum chucks are good, but don't work on all woods and take awhile to set-up. The jam chuck is so quick, I usually go that route. Thanks. Happy Turning!

The work is beautiful!!!! In the summer I sharpened a similar one from an Apple tree. The Apple tree was dry, but it was still a little bent! Do you have a cherry that won't bend?

The key to not bending is to thoroughly dry the rough turned blank.

Good question! You can (I do in another video) but with this bowl I didn't have enough material in the lid, plus this method allows me to see and shape the top curve best. Plus, making the knob separate lets you play with the knob design and get it exactly the way you'd like without messing up the lid. All the best to you and Happy Turning!

Hey Mike, I knew someone was going to catch that. LOL Yes, the parting tool is a no-no with side-grain mounted blanks. What I did was part a little ways in and then widen the path with a second part. That way the parting tool doesn't grab as much, but it was still not very smooth. I still don't recommend parting tools on side-grain blanks. Happy Turning!

Really enjoyed this video! I'm going to give this a try with a nice purple heart blank that I have with a maple top. If I may ask, what is the purpose of the black gasket/o-ring on your head stock?

Thanks. Oh that? I have a faceplate that doesn't seat all the way and it fills the gap. It works fine with all the other chucks as well. ;)
