Truly a beautiful peice of wood and sheer artistry in the work. Now I'll be trying to find my own and see if I can match it. I can't help but wonder how it would look with clear rose colored resin in the openings.

Gorgeous piece Jack! I’ve gotta say, when I saw you painting the inside I wasn’t real thrilled with it, but you proved me wrong! It looks amazing! Curious, what was the MC when you started? Or do you even know? - Seth
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth, thanks for the kind words. Iv made countless pieces like this over the years and find that when you really want to show off the beautiful grain on the outside of a vessel it’s often best to make sure there is high contrast behind those voids. It seems crazy to cover up the beautiful grain inside too I know but when you don’t the detail of the piece can be lost against a backdrop of the same colour/pattern. Moisture… it’s green.. for my if it’s green it’s green, it all turns and moves pretty much the same so iv not taken a MC reading in so long I honestly couldn’t find my meter if I spent a whole day digging. This piece moved a little while drying but not a great deal, mostly I’d say that’s down to twisted merging grain direction of about 7 branches… and thin and even walls are a must of course. 😊 Thanks for watching dude 👍🏻

Hi thanks for watching. Yes the wood was green when turned but the finished photos at the end of the video are from 3 weeks after once the piece has sat in our home and has dried almost fully.. that is to say all movement ( warps and potential cracks) will have happened by that point. Avoiding cracks is fairly straightforward, the key is to have even thickness down the walls, through the transition and into the base. The thinner the walls the less likely they are to crack as removing wood also removes stored tension.. this tension is what causes cracking as the piece looses moisture and contracts. I could talk all day on the subject but those are the main things to shoot for. Thanks for watching. Let me know if you have any other questions. 😊👍🏻

Drying depends on wall thickness .. ie less mass less drying. Are you turning green wood to finish or are you twice turning your bowls? Twice turned bowls are left thick, this removes a large part of the tension in the Wood meaning you can turn them again once they have dried.. this is how I use the turn bowls for sale.. many years ago, before I discovered the wonders of green turning. Yes, if you are twice turning your bowls I’d leave the roughed out blanks to air dry for months.. I would spend 2 solid months turning up to 1000 rough bowls then leave them for a full year before re-turning. That method has its place in woodturning for sure but I found as I developed my style I no longer wanted to make Chucky heavy bowls and instead my work got thinner and more refined.. at that point it became apparent that turning “green” would give nicer and more natural results, and the colour of the finished bowls is far superior. 3 weeks in a heated home/workshop is more than enough for a thin turned bowl to “dry” , again, that is to say “do all it’s movement” .. dry is a somewhat subjective term as dry would imply 0%MC And as you’ll know that is not what we aim for when we dry bowls.. If you are green turning and then leaving your work for months before you sand and finish it I’d suggest you start to play around with finishing the green wood in one sitting, if you struggle to sand the wood you can blanch the surface using a torch or hot air gun.. after 3 weeks if you’ve turned it right you should see slight to extreme warping (depending on grain orientation and complexity) but zero cracks. Check out “Natural selection studio” on Instagram to see results of a similar process.

Until now I have mainly twice turned, but listening you and watching the results of your work, I will definitely try it more often. I also don’t want to become a production turner but create more artistic singular pieces (I start sculpturing some of my pieces). What thickness do you recommend? On every type of wood or mainly burls like in your video ? Thanks !

For thickness I’d say 5mm and under. But really you can get away with much thicker if the wall is even. I’m yet to find a green wood that doesn’t respond well I favour cherry and sycamore, beech and oak have more of a tendency to split (oak especially in areas of twisted grain) But don’t avoid green turned oak.. as it dries after sanding and finishing the grain becomes beautifully textured because the summer growth shrinks more than winter growth. The best thing about it all is your not massively invested in it, financially or emotionally so you can flex through load of form in a day and then see how you feel about them in 3 weeks,, then tweek your approach.. I source (rescue) a lot of my wood from the firewood industry so it’s not super expensive, I buy in volume too again that keeps the price down.. and when I’m done I send all shavings to be made into compost so the life’s work of the tree isn’t diminished.. keep all that carbon locked up for our grandchildren’s children. 😊 Have fun with it.. and remember making shavings is more productive than making bowls (in the long run😉)
