Hi Phil, Sorry for being late to the show watching this video but been away on holiday. You title says "My Most Unusual", I would like to say in my opinion its not your most unusual but its your best ever bowl. It is certainly my favourite of the ones I've watched you turn and as I write this I can't actually think of any other bowl I've seen turned by the other people I follow that can beat it. The character in the root ball is just outstanding and it took a master of his craft to bring that out. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw

Wow, this is quite a comment, Huw, and believe me, I appreciate it more than you might know! We agree, I'm sure, it's the piece of wood I started with that makes this a truly unique and beautiful piece. The problem is, where do I go from here but down! LOL! Thank you so much, Huw, and welcome back! Phil

Stumbled across a video I hadn’t noticed before. All I can say is I’m so pleased to have found it. This rose root ball is stunning, and I know will always bring you some little solace after the passing of your wife. Wood has such special qualities as you know. It holds memories. I still own a piece of driftwood that my late husband had owned for decades. It is always within my eye line, no matter how often I have moved home, it comes too. I know you will have had much pleasure from looking and holding this piece, as well as moments of sadness. Hold onto it, talk to it (it’s not as nutty as it sounds), and leave your worries and concerns with it. It is will lighten the load. Thank you for posting this and for allowing me to watch the transformation from a ball of confusion to a bowl of delight. X

What a truly beautiful piece. And such a piece to honor the love of your life. Ron and I watched with wonder. If you look at your finished piece of art we found at least 4 hearts and a half of one. It was your love coming through Phil. I understand the pain after loosing my first husband to cancer after a strong hard fight and Ron does also. He lost his first wife when he came home and found her on the floor. She had already gone Home. Look often at that piece and remember how gentle and loving your wife was while here on Earth and know you will meet again some day.. please stay safe our new friend.

Hello Phil. Lar from 🇨🇦 here. I cant believe I missed this video. This has got to be the most SPECTACULAR piece I’ve ever seen, and it was created by my friend at Shady Acres.WOW. When I first seen the piece I thought 💭.Come on Phil, even you can not make anything out of this , BUT WAS I WRONG. You made a purse out of a sows ear my friend. It shows your skill and patience to work with such a difficult piece. I hope this one sits front and centre on your display shelf. The ending of the video was very moving for me. The story brought a tear to my eyes. How are you doing Phil? I hope you are healing from such a horrific loss. Just know that this viewer cares .

I’ve only very recently found your channel because I was looking at wood carving videos. My partner died on Jan 2nd 2020 but prior to this we had discussed doing whittling together. He had been a very successful ice sculptor so this would have been a relatively easy move for him. So 7 months after his death I bought some knives & chisels & have been trying to whittle. I find watching your turning quite relaxing & love to see the end results. Beautiful! I was sad to hear of your wife’s passing but was impressed to see you back on your channel so soon. I can’t say I’m doing as well as you. All the best. Look forward to many more videos.

Hey Phil, I am just seeing this video from several years ago. I have been working on a huge piece of oak burl wood. It's heavy, wonky, with 2 deep cavities so I could only go so far before I ruined it. So, like you, I made the decision to stop. I was tempted to use some epoxy to fill some of the cavities but my husband keeps whispering to me that he loves it natural, so I decided to leave it as it is. Your video touched my heart over the loss of your wife. That beautiful piece you made from a rose root was a fitting memorial for your bride. Thank you for everything you do. 💗

Some of the incredible voids and fissures in this rootball are deep and wide so keeping the walls think was a wise decision because that accentuates those features. You certainly made a beautiful swan from something that started as an ugly duckling for sure. I'm sure you would say that the swan was there all along and you just encouraged it to grow out of the duckling. I only recently discovered your channel and subscribed so I'm catching up slowly on older videos like this one. I was saddened to hear you tell of your wife's passing - my sincere condolences Phil. Thank you Phil for sharing your life with us, so sorry to hear about your wife. You must really miss her, I sense that you were very close to her. Forgive me for being so obvious, but when someone that close leaves this world they take a part of you with them. Take care Phil, keep on turning!

Unusual is putting it mildly. That had me right there with you. I could feel every pulse of the chisel as it passed over all those voids.Well worth doing and turned out fantastic. The bowl is not too thick at all because you left the features on the outside and the inside that are what makes the bowl. So the wall is what it is. When I first saw you showing the root ball I saw a dungeness crab. I suppose because I just got back an hour ago from 3 days at Beverly Beach which is just south of Depoe Bay Oregon and I had crabs on my mind. Special thanks to tuffy for his thoughtful gift. Another great job Phil, Gary

Thank you, my friend! A piece like this does not come by very often, like never. I think we have been to Beverly Beach, certainly to Depoe Bay. Wonderful area, great memories. Crabs are always on my mind! There is a casino up here that has Seafood night on Fridays and Saturdays. King crab legs, all you can eat and they don't limit it in any way. People (me) just load their plates up with piles of crab legs. Oh, man, now I'm getting hungry! Yes, I owe Tuffy a lot for sending this once in a lifetime piece to me. Phil

Phil I may have to dig up all the plants in the yard to get the root balls. I wonder if they will keep growing if I replant them without the root balls. Never mind bad 💡

Phil, your patience and attention never fails to amaze. Some folks would have torn that root ball to pieces by getting in a hurry and not paying attention. But you my friend can take a cucumber & and make a bowl out of it. That’s a beautiful piece of natures workmanship. They broke the mold with you, buddy!

Lovely work, you turn so much air ,I believe that can be very tricky and potentially dangerous I love the way you just let the wood tell you how it wants to be. I tend to watch wood turning when I need to relax in stressful times, and you are so no nonsense and can do. I shall work my way through the videos.thank you for sharing,

The beauty you have helped release in this piece is utterly breath taking Phil. As I looked & watched I don't think anyone & I mean Anyone, would have made better decisions & to be privy to your thoughts as you talked them through was outstanding my friend. Superb 'work' from a Master of his Craft. If you never 'beat' this piece in the future, I am absolutely sure that you will equal it & many times over at that. Long may you continue to turn.

Looks like a life form! Amazing, something you can have in your hands and by feel, connect with Mother Nature in a deeply special way. It is not a bowl. It is an experience. When you shared the connection with your wife’s passing, it was so much a monument between you, her, creation. I am honored to have taken the trip with you.
