Great looking bowl. What is your process for drying a bowl in the microwave? Thanks for the great information.
@RobBrandtWoodturning

Hi Dean, thank you. I answered this for someone else so have just copied it below for you. Let me know if you have any questions. I had a some small cracks that I filled with CA to stop them spreading. They were turned off when I trued up the bowl once it was finished moving. Keep well, Rob I painted the whole bowl with Anchorseal 2, then I warm up the rough turned bowl, feels warm but not hot, then let it cool down and repeat. At the beginning it took 30 s to warm up and at the end I was cooking for 3 minutes. Weight is more accurate as the moisture meter only tells you about the surface, not what is happening in the center of the wood. Keep well, Rob

If you turn Osage orange again, I have an alternative finishing process for you. Finish to 180 or so. Then take a torch to the surface and bake it and let the wood turn deep brown and singe black, but don’t turn it all into ash. Start back with 120 to remove carbon and ash and move through grits to 400, then 1500,2000, and finish

@RobBrandtWoodturning
@RobBrandtWoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
I use the Benjamin Best 5/8 bowl gouge for the rouge turning when the wood is still wet, so it cuts like butter, and the Robert Sorby 1/2 bowl gouge for finishing once the wood has dried in this video but I also use the Benjamin tools for finish cuts. I choose the tool that has the grind angle that gives me access and is sharp . I use the Tormek system for sharpening, which leaves the chisels scary sharp. I think a CBR wheel would work as well for turning tools, but I haven’t tried it. I hope that helps, keep well, Rob

@@RobBrandtWoodturning yes sir, that info is very helpful. I own a tormek but have been putting off getting the attachment for the 40x40 grind. But I think I will chase one down now, it seems to be worth it, especially if it gets them sharp enough to do the cuts you were doing. Thanks again and keep up the great content! 👍
