In this woodturning video you will see my first attempt at crafting a lidded pot and I had a bit of a nightmare which left it in ruins, as you will see a few minutes in! I did manage to salvage it though as luckily the wood I had glued up was plenty big enough to accommodate an extra lid (spoiler)! Anyway, take a look and see what went wrong, and what I did for redemption!

It will be a bowl or something else made from a lovely block of Afromosia. I’ve just turned a bowl from it which will be shown on Sunday and it is stunning wood.

Good looking pot/box. Question, is the lighter wood treated pine? If it is, the chemicals used to treat it is very dangerous to turn because of the dust created and then breathed in. If not, never mind. 4 suggestions. Please take these with the best of intentions on my part. I hate to see someone hurt because they didn’t know any better. I’m not the authority. Just another turner who has been doing this for 25+ years and learned a few things at the school of hard knocks. 1. You glue up is bowl orientation. Never use a spindal roughing gouge unless all the grain is aligned with the bed ways. You made it through this one, but several times a year I see where someone has done just as you did and the tool catches the end grain causing the tool to bend, or worse, break. The bowl gouge is a MUCH better tool for roughing this blank. 2. Several times I noticed your tool rest twist as you were turning. ALWAYS make sure the tool rest and banjo are tight before you begin the cut. I’ve ruined more than one piece because of the tool rest either rubbing against the piece or actually digging into it causing an explosion. 3. The catch on the lid was caused by using the wrong tool for the job. Like the spindle roughing gouge, the skew is designed to be used only on wood with the grain aligned with the ways. A bowl gouge or detail gouge would have done a better/safer job there. 4. The 1st lid looked like it could have been saved. It may not have been the shape you had planned in your mind, but by reversing it I think you could have rounded the top over and eliminated the torn out chunk cause by catching the skew. Glad it all worked out. Keep at it. This is a fantastic hobby that develops a ton of skills over time. You are well on the way. I hope that you reach the 500 milestone quickly.

Oh and the wood used is Cherry and Sapele. 👍🏻
