Today's project is a short hollow form with a deep undercut. I've only been turning for less than two years and I always try and push the boundaries of what I can do. I've never tried turning something with such a deep undercut. This really pushed my abilities and it was a lot of fun to make.
I hope you enjoy this video. Please let me know if there is a project you'd like to see me make and I will do my best to do it. Thank you for all the support you have shown me and the channel!
Isaiah 1:18 (NIV)
“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Thank you for labeling your chisels, That helps me see and understand. It wasn't long ago i didn't know the difference between a skew and a bowl chisel. (Ok, i still don't, i would have used a skew on the outside. I have a long way to go.)

Thank you for watching! As you can see in even my newest turning video, I still have to reach for the carbides. I watch other turners use a bowl gouge and they get the most beautiful shavings. Me, all I get is dust everywhere. Always something to learn! - Ed

I hate to be a grump but too many turners do not pay attention to the shape and form of their work. Creating a pleasing curve makes the project. You did a great job in producing an attractive shape. The flat top with the bead rim and appropriate curve yields a nice piece. Well done!

I've recently started turning hollow forms similar to the one you have just completed...finishing 3 to date. The hardest part for me ( and apparently you, as well) is hollowing the outer most edge of the form. How far you can reach with standard tools depends, in large part, on the size of the opening. One things I've seen (Sam Angelo, for example) is to make a larger opening than desired in order to deepen the hollowing, then use an insert with a very small hole. I'm currently trying that on an ambrosia maple form and a walnut insert. The walnut is a gnarly cutoff from a crotch piece and its figure and color work well with the maple.

Well I think you did a great job as usual. And I love the Latin Jazz background music. You know, its seem a lot of the videos I watch everyone wants their bowls and vases and hollow forms thin. Like if you can't get it thin, your a poor turner. If you can do it, fantastic. But I actually like the thicker feel and look. And if the person looking at your wares for purchase doesn't like it, then don't buy it. I just love to turn, good or bad. We all come with different skill levels and have different outcomes in our trials. Keep up the great work Ed. Stay safe.

Great looking hollowform Ed! Love that spalted hackberry. I use both EWT and a Sorby with the tip like you mentioned, each has its advantages. The Sorby can do a deeper undercut but it comes at the price of getting catches, you need to keep a REAL firm grip with an undercut like that. Anyhow thanks for the vid and stay cool during these triple digit temps we’re getting! - Jay

Hackberry has a dark and green coloration in the wood. Dark is usually where the knots are from the wood I've used. It turns very chippy for me rather than nice shavings I get out of other woods. That turned out great!!

Nice vid Ed and beautiful hollow form, and as a tip, if you drop your handle of the bowl gouge way down you can cut only at the wing of the gouge and get a more smooth finishing cut and when you open then the flute and point the tool more in direction you want to cut you can remove wood crazy fast 😅
@WolfRidgeWoodworking
@WolfRidgeWoodworking 4 жыл бұрын
Oh thank you so much for that tip Yannic! I do struggle with getting a clean cut when trying to true up the roundness of the piece. It seems like I get a lot of chatter from the gouge sometimes. I will try this tip and see if that helps. Thank you again. Have a blessed day! - Ed

New subscriber here. Gave it a "like" although I do have a couple of negative comments. The good: good size, nice shape, a little more dome to the top might be in order, excellent finish. The bad (well not real bad): the captions don't stay on the screen long enough, I would rather hear your commentary and skip the captions, the background music could be farther in the background, actually gone would be OK by me (at least it wasn't four guitars and a drummer who thinks he's the lead). Love the shape, my favorite hollow form shape I've seen so far! I've not done any hollow forms yet. I recently bought a set of hand thread chasers so I'm about to start on some hollow form turning. I have the Carter hollowing system bit it'll be too large to get into small openings, so I'll have to get some other hollowing tools. Are you pretty happy with the EWT hollowers? Have you come up with any tool solutions for being able to get the top better for that shape yet?

@@WolfRidgeWoodworking You're very welcome brother! I took a peak through Andy's videos and didn't see his hollowing system. This is the one I have: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7uklZCkqJ6mo4E.html It works great for larger openings and things that don't have to be undercut much. Since I want to do some small hollow forms I've got to try to decide which swan/goose neck hollower to get.
