Wood turning boxes is a fun project that is a great seller at craft and art shows. These boxes look great on a shelf but also are functional. In this video you will learn how i make a grain matched end grain box with these simple 6 steps.

This is a great method which I hope to attempt soon. I think thought, I'll keep my tool edge much further away from the chuck jaws in rotation.

I like to splt the top and bottom as you do. Then I turn the bottom , holding it on the bottom 1/2". Sand and finish in and out and friction polish it. Then I do the inside of the lid and friction fit the bottom to it and finish the bottom of the box. Then I return the lid to a sacrificial piece in the chuck and complete the grip knob, friction polishing this too.

I love watching woodworking videos, these lathe vids are mesmerizing at times. A curious question I had though is, wouldn't it be better on the tools for the lathe if you had cut down the "square" shape of it first using a saw or is it just the satisfaction of beginning to end on the lathe? No hate I promise, just a curiosity.
@thedevilinthecircuit1414
@thedevilinthecircuit1414 Ай бұрын
On small-diameter items like these, reducing a square to a 'rounder' shape is actually easier on the lathe. For larger pieces (6"-8" and up), it's less...adventurous...if you knock it down to an octagon or round shape before you start turning.

@BlackLabelwoodworks
@BlackLabelwoodworks 28 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching. I used a rotary tool and a 2 inch sanding disc. If you wanted you could make a jamb chuck to fit the opening and do it that way. I just find it easier with the rotary tool for small turnings.

Great looking box, but did you not sand it more before finishing. There are still visible rings. Thanks for sharing your techniques, but yo let the piece down by not sanding it with higher grade papers.

I like your straight forward style of teaching/talking. For me, the noise from the lathe and from tool-on-wood is as loud or louder than your voice. I can barely make out what you’re saying when you talk while working. You can do better, judging from other turners videos. In all other respects very enjoyable and informative and you could be one of my regularly watched content producers. Maybe a little more light directed on the work area?

Nice enough shape, but could be refined to appeal to the ladies. I’d never suggest that it’s ok to take a tool that close to spinning jaws! When turning spalted pieces it’s essential to use sharp tools, to avoid tearing the very soft parts of the wood. I would also suggest a mask especially for the fine powder you scraped off with the swan neck. Again a sharp insert would cut better and produce a shaving not dust.

Nice design for a box but i cant see anybody buying it with the condition you left it in. The tool marks, that gash on the side, tearout inside the lid and on the tenon for the lid. Sorry to be be so critical. Other than that you put out a nice video.
