Four score and 110k members ago, i started following this channel. Not for your giveaways but because of the sheer joy of watching someone who is simply excellent at his craft, and humble enough to share his secrets. I have not used those secrets, but I have shared the joy with family and friends. Thank you fpr your content. I believe your charisma and charm would have you with this many followers even without the giveaways. Keep up the good work. Oh and btw, if I did happen to ever win a bowl, I can promise you that NEVER, EVER, in a million years, would I ever turn it down. 😅😅😅😅 God be with you.

I am sorry to see rude comments Jim! While I can understand being disappointed, it is a giveaway and only one person can win out of literally thousands who comment every week. We should be thankful for the opportunity to have a giveaway. I know I am. ( off topic, and to my original reason for commenting😂..) Also psychologically our brains see and look for patterns. I believe it is almost impossible for anyone to make truly random things Jim. I believe all is normal❤ hugs. And beautiful job on the bowl. Love it as always.

That bowl is beautiful. When it comes to making things random, that is not just you. What helps me is looking for patterns in nature. So, instead of making something random, I'd look at a piece of wood, for example, and draw out the 3 features that stand out the most. You can even cheat and trace things directly. Hope this helps.

I love the look of the aluminum inclusions in this piece! I think your method of creating additional inlay areas will only get better with time and practice. The tree-made inlay area has more rounded edges, with thinner fingers coming off of it, and of course shoots through the bowl at an angle, so the inside and outside are slightly different shapes. I'm excited to watch you work on your process! In terms of making things look random, you're totally not wrong, human brains HATE random things. We like to see patterns in everything, it's one of our major evolutionary advantages. Congrats on your channel growth, it's so earned! Absolutely understand the need to switch the giveaways to every ten thousand, makes total sense.

Good morning, Jim. I take a walk in my woods to find the randomness you may be looking for. I walk the dogs and just look for funky-shaped fallen bark, odd broken and down branch junctions, etc. Then, I just trace around an area needing repair. I let Mother Nature solve my lack of imagery issues. 🤫

@@SpragueWoodturning I'd also like to add that as a wife who's moved 9 times in 28 years and a (short term) realtor...I feel for you and (especially) your wife. It can be the MOST stressful time in life. Me and my husband (who's Canadian) think of you guys often. Honestly, you've been in our prayers. If I could give any advice it would be to attain a blank or lined book that is just for ALL things about the move. One source that holds movers, lists of items to keep, sell, donate... Programs in Canada that offer help to turn on elec., gas, internet, change of address forms, etc. *I find those come with helpful coupons, too. I've saved each book from our moves. They're FULL of memories and scotch taped important papers. But they kept us sane!!! *And less likely to argue from stresses.💕👊🏼 Well...Best of luck, friends!!! And I am exactly the same with making things look natural and random. I am a math major through and through, I think very geometrically. I saw some beautiful handmade Christmas cards one year and I decided I wanted to do that. Mine looked dreadful!! 😅 If I put a snowflake in this corner, I have to put one in every corner. I cannot make anything that requires some random placement of [____] fill in the blank. I just can’t do it, my brain won’t go there. So I feel you on that one. But I loved the inlay areas! And, my mom always said: “There’s a hat for every head and a head for every hat.” Some people will like this and not that, and vice versa. I loved this piece!!!

@@SpragueWoodturning I see some people make it look so easy! My brain just won’t do it. I can even drop stuff from height and they will land in a geometric pattern. It’s our struggle Jim! 🥹 😂😂

I love bowls like this, they have character. There's so much you can do with that. The Japanese use to fix their cracked porcelain bowls with gold repairs (I believe it was a shellac type glue coated with a gold powder) They were so beautiful they started breaking pottery and doing this repair. To be honest the bowl is beautiful but I would have preferred a more natural filler like a solid black or an *amber color and not a shiny alum. filler. You could have embedded something in the amber like a fossil . There are semi-precious stones you can buy really cheap as well.

You’re referring to the Kintsugi method of repairing pottery, I’ve actually done that a number of times here on the channel. Thanks

Fantastic looking bowl Jim! I love all the grain variations and how the burning you did really highlights the aluminium shavings A great way to save a bowl that could have ended up in the burning pile. Hope all goes well with the house sale so you can get on with the new build. Cheers

Designer epoxy. Outstanding, Jim. At 10:49 the inlay looks like a small dog. At 10:59, the inlay resembles something with ears, nose, and mouth. Don't ask. That's just what pops into my head as I see them. Keep up the great work and we'll see you next week. 😊😊
