THANK YOU all so much for watching! I want to get one thing clear: I did not say that this is a perfect jig that will last for years and years! The hole will wear out after a couple of projects, then you have drill a new hole. BUT, for a glue-up like this you don´t need to have a Biscuit or domino jointer, this jig will do the same job, just as well!

Good jig. Suggestion, instead of one hole, put two holes the distance you want for your dowels to be apart and then you will be able to drill two holes from one clamp up.

Currently working on a sushi counter for my store and I had thought about using dowel pins to join edges of 2pcs of 2*8”. I was kinda skeptical about using the dowel pins but this proves that it works. Thank You!

I completely agree with you. For the hobbyist, dowels are a good, affordable, and effective option for almost any loose tenon joint. BTW: If you want a specific doweling jig to last longer, use a metal insert in the drill guide and always have the drill inserted to the surface of the wood before starting it. Festool Dominos are great, but only a production shop can justify the expense, unless money is no object to the user. Well done!
@bighands69
@bighands69 5 жыл бұрын
Jerry Stark I would disagree with you on a production shop only justifying them. Some people it maybe their central tool to allow them quick easy jointing so that they can do lots of projects. For the amatuer a Track saw and biscuit jointer could give them the complete workshop.

Couple of points you should mention. First, the wood block should be a hardwood. Pine or other softwood are going to get chewed up pretty quickly. Second, most people don't have plexiglass lying around. You can use a thinner piece of wood, just be sure to carry your centre line to that piece of wood since you won't be able to see it on the block with the hole. And finally, you should mention the depth of the hole in relation to the length of dowel. Both holes should be a 1/16 of an inch deeper than half the dowel length so it sits nearly equally deep in both pieces of wood.

You can get clear clip boards from the discount stores all day long. If you don't think one is thick enough you can cut the board in half and glue them together on the ends and get the same effect.

Nice little jig! My amendment isn't simpler to make than yours, but it's for those without access to (current treasured) transparent plexiglass: instead of using plastic, you could keep the scribed line on the edge visible simply by attaching two pieces of wood either side (rather than covering the lines with any material).

I made a version similar to this. If you’re only making one or two tables, it’s fine. But if you’re making more, then a metal sleeve insert is a must in the hole. You also need to be accurate with your holes as creeping up or down just a bit with your drill can throw things out of alignment. And when doing multiple holes, it’s easy to get sloppy and takes patience to make sure you’re holding the drill dead center. But a good technique to save money when you’re starting out

@Solexcruiser
@Solexcruiser 3 жыл бұрын
@@moorecha It's never warped, the wood is clearer, and it's not all cut to standard sizes. It's easy to order wood any dimension you wish. Noone is sistering up 2x8s, for example. They get actual beams. It's the old world. Everything is still done the way it should be done. Timber is carefully raised in rows or well-tended forests without dead trees fallen everywhere, and crooked young trees are removed to make space for the good ones. The clearing is done is 1-2 acre patches instead of vast clearcutting. The timber is cut and then carefully cured with wood strips between each layer and these are kept in place until the wood is sold to the customer.

Before I ever got a domino or Lamello biscuit jointer I used dowels extensively. If you have a drill press you can also use that when producing legs for a table. If not you can produce jigs that allow you to hold your drill in place. Also metal inserts can be used to as to not wear out the hole with the drill in your jig. Alternatively a dowel jig can be had for about 20 Euros and Dowel centres can be had for about 0 to 5 euros. These things are not better than what is in the video but can be added to it.

Skip the biscuits. Skip the jig. Just glue. Bar clamp faces need only be raised or lowered during clamping to achieve flat. You MUST sight along the short ends and check the middle with a straight edge. The boards will stay straight ONLY if they are straight under tension. First try boards tight to the bar clamp, but my experience is that the bar clamp faces will need to be moved up or down on the board's edge and sometimes one end of the bar clamp is higher or lower than the other. Start clamping in the middle of the top and work toward the ends. Use scrap and a heavy dead blow hammer to discipline the 'reluctant' boards.
