Got some aged walnut just the other day and gonna give it a shot as well... at least this process. What I am seeing here on this particular board design is when you go to hang it, it is going to want to swing to the left which isn't really a problem unless you're needing wall space or have other things hanging along side it. It won't center when it hangs. But, that's just my thoughts. Still love this finished product though.

Jordan i have just started two large butcherblock chopping boards myself and on one side I plan to do a pyography drawing so it can be sitting out as an artistic piece and then the chopping side would be hid. My question is regarding your sanding process, you use water to raise the grain i had planned on using alcohol should I use water for a better finish also when re-sanding how far back did you go or did you re-start at 240 grit? Ps this looks awesome and I love the finished shape 👍👍👍
@JordanWoodwerx
@JordanWoodwerx 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gavin, thank you , glad you liked it! For food stuff I would use water. I stopped at 240 before the water then sanded back with 300. I always do the water and sand back twice, could be over kill but that’s how o do it. Always sand back with the next higher grit, if it’s the same or lower grit you reveal new grain which defeats the water treatment. Hope I helped Gavin! PS, let the mineral oil or what ever you use to really soak in, maybe a couple of coats, again, maybe overkill but that’s what I do. Thanks again!
@gavincoyle
@gavincoyle 3 жыл бұрын
@@JordanWoodwerx thanks very much thats really helpful I am a big believer in over kill as its always better than wishing you had done the extra when its too late. Very much appreciate the help 👍👍👍
@gavincoyle
@gavincoyle 3 жыл бұрын
@@JordanWoodwerx could I push further in regards your sanding process, you do it twice am I right in saying you sand up to 240 wet and sand from 300ish when do you re wet and what grit do you sand with or is it twice at 240 and 300
@JordanWoodwerx
@JordanWoodwerx 3 жыл бұрын
@@gavincoyle Hi Gavin, after the second soaking I’ll use 400 grit. Then your board will be smooth as silk!! Keep us posted on the outcome!
@stephenmcgeown
@stephenmcgeown Жыл бұрын
That came out beautifully. What was the finest grain of sandpaper did you eventually use? When I did something similar to this project, when I put mineral oil and wax on it, the wood went really dark to the point where I could hardly make out the grain. Someone said it could have been because I didn't use fine enough sandpaper, so am curious what you used. Thanks!
@JordanWoodwerx
@JordanWoodwerx Жыл бұрын
Thank you Stephen! I sanded to 320 grit and popped/raised the grain with water and let it dry, then lightly sanded with 400 grit, I did that twice. Then used the mineral oil on it. Not sure why the grain on your board came out darker, sanding to a higher grit sometimes will make the grain tighter and not absorb the finish, but usually not to the point you can’t see the grain. Hope this helped Stephen, appreciate you!

How do you prevent your boards from cupping?
@JordanWoodwerx
@JordanWoodwerx 2 жыл бұрын
The wood I use is usually pretty dry. Any cupping is taken care of in the planer. If using multiple pieces of wood, just don’t clamp to tight during glue up. And should be good. Just tight enough to get a good glue squeeze out!
