Watching you make the tools for woodworking by hand reminds me of when I was pursuing my computer science degree, and the time came for us to write a compiler--the tool that receives a programmer's source code and converts it to a finished executable. I don't use hand tools much, but I enjoy watching you use them well. Good narration, too.

Great job. Looks amazing and I'm sure it will work amazing too. Must have taken a while to file out that groove in the iron. I always thought it was cool how both shavings curled around each other. Just one of those little things that makes me smile like a idiot while people across the room are thinking "whats wrong with him"? Great job as usual. 👍

A little more detail on the end profile of the tonguing plane would be great, how proud is the blade from the wood? I assume the groove in the plane is 1/4 deep x 1/4" wide and when the board bottoms out you're done.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 жыл бұрын
The blade sticks out depending on how sick of shaving you want. Just like any other plane most of the time it's just 1/64 of an inch or so. the dimensions of the tongue depend on the dimensions of the groove they just have to match each other in this case they were slightly thinner than 1/4 inch. Then yes to death stop is the secondary soul of the plane.

Second question...the "tweaking" you did to make the plane run smoother....what did that entail? Flattening? More sharpening of blade?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
+Slap Stick It was mostly cleaning up the profile of the plane body to match the iron better. I wish I have video of that but apparently the camera was not on for that step. but it generally becomes obvious that some parts of the wooden body were rubbing when you test it. Great questions thanks for asking. if you would like further clarification just ask!

I watched both videos for this set that to me seems exactly what I am looking for my first proper woodwork project. @WoodByWright

I think I skipped that part initially because I had several other videos on creating a bevel on Steel. And sharpening these is almost identical to sharpening a standard chisel. Thanks.

After you undercut the wedge space, you planed the wedge to fit the space. But, doesn't that make the wedge a bit smaller now? Is that the goal? Are wedges generally a little smaller than the space?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
+Slap Stick yes the wedge is a bit smaller but then it just slides down a bit further so it is still tight on all sides. that is why I do not cut the tip off tell that is sized.

Cherry red is a low heat, magnetism ceases at the point called critical heat, which is closer to a welding heat than cherry red. Cherry red is what you get to to temper, or anneal, not harden.

Once you had gotten the grooving plane complete, could you have used to make the tonguing plane?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 жыл бұрын
You could, but that would make the end joint slightly too tight. I like to make them so they will not quite fit together that way the joint will have a slight amount of play making it easier to put together longboards.

@@WoodByWright could you make the grooving plane first, then use that and a second pass with the inclusion of a very small shim to make the tonguing plane? You could then use the grooving iron and the same shim to determine the gap in the tonguing plane

Great content. But, I must complain about the music on top of your monologue on top of the sounds of the work. We old people have difficulty focusing on spoken words when there is too much extraneous noise. Music and competing conversations are the worst culprits. Please do all your viewers, subscriber and admirers a favor--skip the music. Anyone can play music of their choosing or none at all. I often turn on subtitles and turn off sound, but then I don't get to hear the lovely sounds made by hand tools. To get back to the positive - very informative video. Thanks.

James: I vaguely recall you made a plane and had to shape and temper the iron for it. I cannot seem to recall which video that was. I have a 44 type plough plane and the blades are awful. (It was given to me) After sharpening and honing the blades, they crack (on the sharp edger) after one use. It is only pine so that shouldn't happen. If I could find a piece of steel like you used, I could shape and try to temper a new blade. A factory replacement blade is not an option. Plus, if they sent me bad steel the first time, what are the odds they will send me another bad steel. Can you direct me to the place you purchased the steel for your planes? (I have no clue on how to even search Google for what I need) Thanks

I am hoping that Lee Valley - Veritas replacement plow/plough plane blades will fit. I am waiting to hear about the thickness of their blades. It would save me the trouble of buying the steel, cutting it and then tempering the cutting edge. I can do that, but I have to weigh the cost and time. You forgot to mention that Amazon Prime is addictive. Happy and healthy holiday!
