In the Beginning (also released as Cassandranite) is an album featuring the demo tapes recorded in 1965 by trumpeter Woody Shaw in his original quest for a recording contract which was eventually released on the Muse label in 1983.[1][2] Cassandranite was released as part of Woody Shaw: The Complete Muse Sessions by Mosaic Records in 2013.
Some interesting, uneven, but worthwhile '65 material from trumpeter Woody Shaw. He was still fresh on the jazz scene and had only recently recovered from the death of mentor Eric Dolphy. Shaw teamed with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, pianist Herbie Hancock, and bassists Ron Carter or Paul Chambers on these cuts. His potential certainly emerges, as does the fact he was a tentative, unsure soloist at this juncture. Want to be featured on this channel? Submit your content to: berniesbootlegs@gmail.com

It's a shame Alfred Lion did not produce this album for Blue Note, it would have been a perfect addition to the Blue Note library.

This is just a bloody great album. First recorded for the Blue Note label in 1965 by (tell tale, like in the pocket) Rudy van Gelder. A brilliant bunch of side-men playing their hearts out. Fantastic hard-bop Jazz at its best. Dig this Gem folks & Cheers!

Woody was a monster. On this date he was what, 21? Talk about confidence and poise for that age.Played our club down in Lakewood NJ a few times - early 70s - and I never missed a note. Showed up with Junior Cook and Steve Turre. He left us too damn soon. Same goes for Joe.

At the end of the day there is a strange connection between Shaw and Wheeler. That being a commitment to non-diatonic intervalic Trumpet lines with a focus on chromatic modern schemes of virtical organization. They were both unconventional jazz composers who's compositions are universally acknowledged.

Any suggestions of who the fastest trumpet played might be? I like hectic bebop/hardbop players and have a hard time finding fast and hectic trumpet players. I like Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis, and obviously Woody Shaw to name a few. I’m basically trying to find the Johnny Griffin of the trumpet. Any suggestions?
