Yeah, same, even the slides and pull offs are just at the right notes where physically possible and being done on notes a guitar player would generally do that. Although does that dynamically adjust as you change playing style?

I just purchased a DGX 970B. For the money, I am quite pleased with that for just over $1000 (w/ stand and 3 pedals) vs. this Genos 2 for ~$6000. To me, after watching this nice demonstration, the G2 would need to do much more to justify an increase of $5000. More buttons, dials and fancy external speakers don't mean any more fun or desirability! I have mine run through my home stereo and it absolutely makes EPIC music! It helps I live in the country and my nearest neighbor is nearly a mile down the gravel road!!! If I were in town playing this setup as I have it configured, I'm certain any neighbors would be hearing it! Thanks for the demo. That said, I believe I'll be enjoying my DGX for many years to come!

Great points. The Genos series, with its plethora of styles and sounds, is like buying a $6,000 jukebox. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, you're almost certain to have some degree of success in playing it. Thus, the beginner won't be likely to lose interest, while the pro can take basic skills to another level. Still, true musicianship, is in doing what you do--forming your own unique styles and sounds.

I love the fact that you remind musicians that extracting instrument sounds from a style can refine its needed simplicity when covering a desired song. It takes a trained ear, and some experimenting, but it beats spending hoards of time starting from scratch!

All of these electronic keyboards, from the cheapest to the most expensive, in the hands of a knowledgeable and skilled player, can be made to produce remarkable musical sounds. It must be very difficult for the manufacturers to find and tweak more bells and whistles to give their offering an edge over the opposition.

So agree! Other vids I've seen on the G2 left me thinking that Yamaha screwed up a good instrument. But, thankfully, Woody knows how to demo the G2. I only wish that he would have or would do a section on focusing on how to and when to use After Touch. I'm a big fan of After Touch and love it much more than the wheels or levers to create effects. With After Touch, instruments can really be made to sound real and interesting.

It makes me want one and also makes me think why there can’t be a good soft iPad app. I know sounds stupid but bear with me GarageBand and Logic are amazing multi track but nothing exists to have arranger styles etc with a midi keyboard and iPad. No reason at all why it couldn’t be done.

It’s so strange that for over 20 years some arrangers have been criticized for sounding a bit “too 1980’s”, but now that’s a good thing. Not complaining because the 80’s was an awesome time for music, but just worth pointing out IMO. We’re even seeing the throwback in the synth workstation keyboards too.

You said it required a bit of manipulation when you wanted to change sounds during you play. 2 quick tricks: 1. You can activate the One Touch Setting (OTS button on the left side). Each time you will change for another style variation (A,B,C,D), the right hand instruments will also change accordingly. 2. You can prepare all your changes in advance and save them in the 10 memory banks located below the screen. That way, you are always 1 button away of a perfect live transition 👍. Great demo. Love it!

Woody, as usual, you brought the insight and comprehensive instruction to help me decide if this keyboard is right for me. Most of all, you show us that with arranger keyboards of good caliber, you don't have to be a professional to sound like one! Thanks to your videos, I gambled with the purchase of a PSR-S975 about 6 years ago, and I now do gigs and open mics in my area. I'm still untapping layers of techniques and songs that I never thought I could play with real punch and impact. That being said, in understanding how to create beats and tracks from scratch, I can produce many of the rhythms offered in the Genos series. So in my case, the Genos would be an expensive way of saving time in playing the songs I know and like. Plus, with the sophistication of good mixers and speakers, the sounds can be mimicked to an appreciable degree.I'd love to know your thoughts on my perspective, and thanks again!

I had a Yamaha 9000pro and gigged with it for many years. Full bands, and trios. It was built like a tank, had 76 keys (I think) and weighed a tonne to carry up stairs, but it lasted and just worked. I never felt the need for a back up board. It was so versatile and it sounded great. I spent hours at home playing to the styles for fun. As you say it's not as easy as it sounds but it turned into a great pro board on stage without using the styles. I had it fully loaded with internal hard drive, extra RAM and 2 x PLG150-AN boards. Sold it a few years ago to an ex Yamaha tech who was so happy with it even though it was a bit battered and hummed a bit when it had warmed up. To me, the Genos seems an improvement in sound quality but not the 'gaping Chasm it probably should be, considering the years between them and the build quality looks a bit err...suspect, but I can only see from the video. Great video review BTW👍🙂

I have played arranger keyboards for forty years , and you timing and reflexes.and speed of hand has to be as fast as a ninja...In order to play them I have no problems ,,I love the arranger.,to create music with more then any instrument in the world ,, and what Yamaha.and Korg Roland Casio and many more , has done I hope they keep it up , In the last ten years I am very happy with , I use arranger keyboards as a base booard and other synths or all different brands , but mostly Yamaha to create music with ,, Really Woody what it does is it gives one person total creative control over the song they want to play and also you can select and rearrange any song in a different style learning this is where the musical art begins , having the talent first to even play piano , I started playing piano when I was 14 years old ,and guitar , drums when I was 6 years old and singing ,, I am well aware of softwear synths and multi tracking , I did studio work in 1980's I have played in country bands and gospel music and church choirs and also Listen to pop rock and edm and disco ,, I was choir director and pianist almost forty years ago and also went to gay bars in Detroit Michigan in 1981.. and heard Sylvester James music ,, Patrick Cowley ,, and Trio Da da da ,, and Soft Cell sex dwarf , Johnny Rotton ,sex Pistols ,,Punk , and Tent Revival southern Gospel music ,,and ACDC and David Bowie and Pink Floyd and the Singing Cooks and Dottie Rambo , I Love the Lighting seeds Ian Brodie ,, I call them my modern Beatles,... I Love synth Pop and Blue Grass funny you should have a banjo in your room I play five string Banjo I used to play Blue Grass music ,, I played at Stella Partons ,, I know Stella and met Avie Lee Parton Dollys Mother at Stellas Hat hosue in Tennesse ,,back in 1995 ,,Stella still knows who I am and we talk in facebook ,, she asked me when she seen my newboard stand what is that a Ironing board ,, ? them X keyboard stands looks just like a Ironing board ,, I told Stella she should do a EDM remix of her music she did I Love it ,, Dolly Is not doing rock music with some of the most amazing ledgends in rock music , Dolly did a song with Galantis from sweden ,, I Love Dolly and Galantis ,,Faith ,,,I am a synth billy and I like to play my synthesizers at home writing songs about well really all kinds of stuff ,,a Hillbilly has no boundries as to what we do we are freely Ignorant of any orthodoxy to any normals well not most of us ,, I am I play anything I want to I will be 63 years old ,,I ant imbecilic I am genius ,,I am carious as to what Yamaha has done with this Magic Music Box LOL heheh that is what my silly nephew calls my synths He has the most cunning sense of humor ,, Magic Music Box ,,I laughed ,, My favorite harmony group is the kings Singers , I like when they do Beatle songs ant they amazing ,,? Your English you should know of the Kings singers ,,six men , I Love Roger Whittecar my piano teacher turned me on to him in the 1970's ,,In my youth I Loved Dan Fogelberg , and Pink Floyd and ACDC and Donna Summer aka Giorgio Moroder ,,He produced all her music ,, I Love Madleen kane ,,Giorgio Moroder produced her to ,, I Loved Queen , I did not listen to the hits I listen to Love of my Life and the more classical piano songs queen did Freddy Mercury was quite the innovator we have arrived at a place where they are so many songs and artist just every where ,,millions of sounds and subjects have been written about is there nay left? that is one reason I life Goa music and strange artist like Diamanda Galás she chews and ripps and bites and screeches he musical music out ,,she is a strange artist but brings a different unlike anyone else ,,I was playing guitar and a song i Love ,,Nights on Broadway by BeeGees who I have Loved from the first time I ever heard them Barry Gibb Lives in Nashville now ,, and has sang with Ricky scaggs ,,, Music is really changing I think the people at Yamaha is aware of this , and I am a artist musician extreme in my musical likes and loves over my life time and musical instrument like the arranger its necessary that TechKNOWLOGY takes a look in to how artist play what kind of instrument the modern musicians will compose music with a instrument ,, the arranger like the Genos 2 is something that is there to meet our evolutions and growth as people artist creations that is my feelings ,,the arrangers and synthesizers will not play them self , the song is not in them the son is in the heart and mind of the artist musician Yamaha understand this I do and we must keep AI under control to some point ai can be very vastley intelligent but its dead it is not alive ,,Humans are alive and they have souls ,, and so does gingers ,,,

Really thinking about switching over to Yamaha for my arranger keyboard. Been using the PA4x since it came out, and it seems like when they released the PA5x, the upgrades were not enough for me to make switch from the PA4 to PA5. I never understood the storage issue with the Korg PA series, they lack when it comes to storage, and Yamaha has plenty and the sounds and beats sound really rich. Thank you for the great demo!

The Pa5 is a prety big step forward from the Pa4 imo, but lots have been arguing that the G2 is not worth the update and just shows they havent really listened to the demos. Yamaha can still learn something from Korg but the G2 is also a prety nice upgrade once you realice that its not just a few samples that has been upgraded. There is several S.art sounds that has been reviced which you first realice when you actually sitting down and playing it and you know the Genos. Then you can hear many of those sounds that cary ower from the G1 have been slightly changed and just is more controlable with the different articulations. I do hope that Yamaha in a later 2.0 ads the posibility to load new FM sounds via .syx files. It's not a synthesizer, but just give us the ability to load more FM sounds. They only take up a few kilobytes in the user memory per sound. There should be plenty space in there for new sounds. And Yamaha really need to hire a team to redesign their YEM software or better .. scrap it and make something new that don't look like it was made pre Y2000.

I have used a Genos before and I'm looking forward to try the Genos 2. Not that I'm really interested in owning one, but the Genos 1 was quite fun to use and toy around with ... up to even hilarious once you discover that you can plug in a microphone to make your voice sound like yodeling. I'm curious what if they added any more funny microphone voice models.

Aside from the different pattern variations, can you do anything to alter them, similar to KARMA technology? On that, you could do things like adjusting the pattern complexity, note repetition, gate, bending, etc. I’m also curious about how it works to create your own styles; is that possible?
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 8 ай бұрын
you can create your own styles on the intrument from scratch, or mix and match parts between styes. or convert midi files to styles on PC. for these demos I just muted parts in the factory styles.

Splendid demo. I was thinking Roland fantom 8 but I think this is more versatile as in the set intro outro styles etc don't think the Roland has any backing at all ? Does the keyboard limit you as it is not 88 or weighted which is a n attraction on the roland
@WoodyPianoShack
@WoodyPianoShack 6 ай бұрын
no backing on the fantom, except perhaps some drum patterns. you gotta make them yourself, and then it's a midi sequencer not realtime responding to chords. 76 keys is very luxurious to me, not limiting. i am used to 49 or 61...

Interesting how many Genos2 videos have been popping up lately. Well it doesn't sound bad at all, although, in my personal opinion, I find those Arranger Keyboards to be over the top overpriced. I am a bit impressed by what those keyboards can do today compared to back in the 90s. And it is a bit fascinating, and although I think it could probably be nice to have an arranger, I struggle to find any real use of them in my gig. I am mainly a vocalist and I use synths/sequencer as backing during my performances. I could imagine it be a great keyboard in the songwriter workshop where it's used to quickly sketch out quick ideas for new songs and produce quick demos to present to the band. I checked the online shops here in Norway, and it cost a whopping 60 000 NOK .. and for that much money you could get a MODX6+, a Nautilus 6 and MCP Key 61! and with those 3 synths/WS you could do almost everything and probably even better than the Genos2. More sounds, more sequencing/sampling/looping and definingly more tweaking of your sounds. I mean Genos2 brag about having FM engine, well, I suppose it is presets, while in MODX+ you get 128 notes polyphonic, fully editable, 8 operator engine. It also have over 10 000+ arpeggios that you could put on all parts. emulating the styles. With Akai MPC 61 you could also use to create "styles" more like you could sample the parts of the songs and loop whatever parts you needed to loop using the 128 pads (16 pads x 8 of banks) Yes it would take more time to do this manually, but that is where the fun is? no? For me its not fun going on stage just reproduc... eh .."playing" something Yamaha made. For me I want everything to be handmade by myself. Down to a single note. And I can pat myself on the back "I did this.. I created it all" )) Do I see myself ever buying Genos2? No way. Its too expensive. I might maybe get a SX900 down the line, but not now. Probably will be the next SX900 replacement. I could use it as a brainstorming songwriting instrument. Would I use it live? nope. I also think those keyboards are mostly used "live" by those who play "taffelmusic" at weddings or other parties where they sit and play during dinner but most people do not really pay attention to what is played, just that something is played instead of a CD player. Ps. I think the style you played at the beginning is more "The Boys of Summer" by Don Henley than take on me.

Someone playing as a hobby might want to consider their own satisfaction with the instrument they’re getting, though. A keyboard that is going to bring a cornucopia of timbres, arranging, personally programmable synth sounds, percussion, organ drawbars, etc. is going to be worth the saving up/financing/bank loan/lay-away plan, etc. if it’s giving you the full pleasure you wanted from playing as leisure time. There’s also the benefit of having a single instrument then learning all of its bells and whistles and hidden intricacies to get you to the end point you actually wanted to have by the end of every track you play or create without grumbling through a manual or having to scavenger hunt a bunch of quasi-useful U-Toob tutorial vids. There’s nothing wrong with being a little self-indulgent if it’s your long-time personal interest and pastime.

different sound engines AFAIK, the only similarity is perhaps the dX7 factory presets! but both can produce similar sounds, as all synths and keyboards do, so some tonal overlap. i'm not super engaged to get M in, as i'm pretty overwhelmed with G2, hydrasynth and Maschine+ and not feeling I have time to learn another complex instrument!

Concert Tutti. In Italian, “tutti” refers to everyone, so that means that everyone in a concert ensemble plays at the same time. For example, you hit one single C note, you’ll hear horns, timpani, brass, cymbals…. Basically everything you’d hear in a full orchestral concert.

Very good demo and presentation. I'm quite old skool when it comes to making music. I'm not sure having a machine like this would do me any favours. I would feel like i'm cheating. There's something about building your own backing track and drums instead of it being there by the press of a button. Nice sounding board though.

Great demo and performance as always Woody! Well, I wouldn't use the orchestral sounds in Genos 2 in my cinematic or trailer projects as they still sound artificial. These keyboards use modeling technology to mimic the sounds of live instruments but still can't defeat the recorded samples in VSTs of course. I really don't know why arranger keyboard vendors even offer an orchestral genre sounds in a keyboard as in my opinion nobody is gonna perform orchestral music live as a one man band and these keyboards mostly used in weddings or live gigs at 5-star hotels. If we talk business, even if you record an orchestral piece in your studio, you can't pitch it to Hollywood clients because their ears are like radar that pick the tiniest artificial sound. Other than that, it's an amazing keyboard indeed for the orchestral (non-business) hobbyist.
@WoodyPianoShack

yeah, this will never be first choice for pro orchestral and score composers, we have NI and Spitfire for them, but fun and satisfying for casual players. those orchestral sounds are used in many of the styles where I think they work very well.
