It took me a long time to realize that the demands of the jobsite quickly beat up my body and also destroy clothing.
As far as protecting my body, the simple fact is I need to be better at wearing personal protection equipment. [PPE].
When it comes to clothing, I look for exceptional durability, comfort, quality of construction, and a fit that you can not only feel in the fabric but see the results in the performance of the clothing.
Many manufacturers are creating work pants with built-in knee pads. If you are occasionally kneeling down then these work pants are the way to go.
Embedded knee pads allow free movement of the leg in the pants without creating strap pinching, sweating, or other pad discomfort. Most importantly there is no lost circulation due to the knee pad and straps.
These knee pads offer some protection when you kneel every once in a while, are generally flexible, and work well at protecting your knees.
We liked the idea of work pants with knee pads but did not like to look of some of the European pants available. Many of these pants have external pockets - and aesthetically, we weren’t fans. So we searched for a more traditional carpenter pant look.
We ended up looking at 2 manufacturers of knee pad work pants, listed below, and wore them to our job sites to compare them.

The back, once the back goes your fucked, served my time as a mason, lots of heavy lifting and just been plane stupid working six days a week no rest bad form just wanting to get the job done. 33 years old and already down for back surgery which transitioned into hip, knee and ankle problems. What I saying is I sacrifice a knee but never my back bend them knees people.

Here in Australia the Hard Yakka Legends are a great pant. I bought a few pairs of the light weight material for hot weather and even they lasted through a few years of hard wear! They have a removable knee pad that curves around the front of your knee. They slide in from the bottom and are secured by velcro that covers 3/4 of the bottom so debris can still fall out most of the time. Great video on the importance of taking care of yourself!

Huge thumbs up for touching on this topic at all. I'm literally looking for either some inserts, or over the pants style, or pants with built in ones (which I just found out exist).

These look great. I've been through my share of PPE items the last 35 years and still find it hard to beat Duluth fire hose 11oz. cargos. Even the *optional hammer hook* attachment for those times you don't have to *carry those heavy tool bags* around. *removable/replaceable* thin knee pads is a hard thing to bypass and may *dry faster* after washing as well...thanks again

I used to go without kneepads even though the Snickers trousers my work provides has a slot built right in for them. I was in the boot one day before going into a job where I knew I'd be crawling through a roofspace and saw my kneepads poking out (just the really cheap foam knee pads) so I slid them in. I could barely feel them and the difference was unbelievable, I was on my knees for most of the day crawling over joists and I had zero pain at the end of the day. Having them slotted into the trousers was massively more comfortable than having them strapped on. We've only got one body, we need to take care of it and it's good to see companies taking the hassle out of it by building protection in.

I've been using kneepad pants for the last 15ish years. I started with the heavier fabric skillers pants which were long lasting and hot in summer. After those, i used (and still do) the bjornklader jubilee pants which had a better design and were almost as heavy duty and hot in summer so i got shorts versions also which i were not as good just because there was no kneepads. After that, i got snickers 3211 pants which are super breathable to the point where i no longer needed shorts in summer. Those did not last quite as long as the other thicker pants, but they still do work well after about 5 years and counting. I just started wearing the newer generation of snickers pants and they seem to be the highest quality pants I have found so far. The d30 kneepads are very good as well.

I find that some double knee pants are not low enough for my legs. I end up kneeling on the tip of the knee pad and have to constantly pull my pant leg down. And I certainly understand what you mean about the knee pads twisting which can be a real pain at times. Very informative info as I have never tried either of these types of pants and will check into them. Thanks.

As I’ve gotten older and needed a neoprene knee sleeve I found a Bodyglove surfers knee sleeve with a 1/2” thick pad is all i wear now. It supports my knee from poping when kneeling and fits under my carhart and levis so it’s always there. Sweating is an issue but I leave mine on all day long every day Working or not.

snickers work wear is the best. especially with there knee guard pro. keeps knee pad in the correct place when getting up and down. they may the have holster pockets, but there's a deep pocket behind which they can easily be tucked in so as not flapping around.

Great video. I wish that carpenter pants didn't have the slash type pocket but more of a traditional u shape. Whenever I hook my tape on it and the dumb thing always pops off when I'm walking around the site. Very irritating. Or as you say in the video a clip even if it is like a cloth one.

I've been wearing built in knee pads for 15 years now. The silicone wash in soft knees with carharrts. Used to be a great combo, but Carharrt has gone hipster fit, and now when I kneel a lot my pants fall down (yeah I'm the same). So carharrt has basically abandoned carpenters. I'd love to see you cover more workpants, but with attention to whether bending a lot moves them out of position. Pockets and hammer loop matter too. I won't buy a pant with a hammer loop on the right. I don't usually wear a belt anymore, I need a knife, a tape, a hammer, and pencils. And they all need to be at the side for bending over. Which obviously makes it tougher to keep the wasteband in the right position. And I love overalls, but not in Virginia most of the year.

Great video Robb! The biggest downside to me is the fact that both options provided on this video I’m not as great as I thought it would be. Both have flaws, which nothing in this world is guaranteed to be perfect every time. Since you uploaded this video, will you able to find others that are more comparable to your trade?

In the oil/machine/ship world I recommend Snickers pads. It's not uncommon to destroy two overalls in a day (and most of the clothing under it), so buying nice clothes is not a good idea. The Snickers are more flexible than the standard ones we get given for free and are not damaged by heavy fuel.I wear them everyday!

I have used snickers trousers for 24 years. Tried others blåkläder and few other brands but they are not thinking all things. Snickers kneepads can be height adjusted and have ventilation, pockets are bigger than blåkläder where hand with gloves are too big, textile pouches are easily cleaned when turned upside down, pockets can be tucked inside if not used, kneepads are covered so that saw dust cannot get in, pocket departments are just enough for me, utility knife, hammerloop, knipex pliers, inkpen and pencils, hultafors tape, hultafors folding square, phone and additional belt pouches for specific jobs. They last so long that you need to buy new because fashion changes.

hi Rob: Thanks for the video. I hope you will update it as you learn about other USA based manufacturers of pants with built in knee pads. I have an acquaintance: Guy spent his career as a union carpenter creating movie sets, here in the Chicago area. He never wore kneepads. He now walks, barely, with two canes, and needs knee replacement surgery for both legs. A few years ago, I bumped into a guy here in the USA from Ireland, and he was wearing a pair of Snickers Work Pants (here it's a candybar, Europe, it's a well known brand of work clothing). I have a $40 pair of CLC gel type knee pads. I have the problem that just about everyone has, too tight or too loose. If they are too loose, they drop to my ankles after about 10 steps. Too tight; and I have blisters and lacerations on the backside of my knees, where the straps dig in. I decided to bite the bullet, and purchase, from England, a couple of pairs of heavy duty work pants with the adjustable kneepads (the kneepads are designed in such a way, that you can move them up and down, a little bit, within the pocket). I ordered a few other things as well. My order was impounded by US Customs, and I had to pay a duty. So each pair ended up costing me well upwards of $100.00 I could care less about the aesthetics. The pants are a tool that work for me. The hammer loop does not work that well, and the pants are very hot. Once the outdoor average temp goes above 70F, it's back to cargo shorts and kneepads. I am more or less happy with my Snickers, but if I knew ahead of time, they would be that expensive, I would not have purchased. I have my own KZfaq channel, and if you see me wearing long black pants, those are the Snickers. Search KZfaq for: Putmystupidthingtogether The folks at Snickers put a lot of science into designing their kneepads. One possible option is to order just the kneepads, and have a tailor or seamstress create pockets on your preferred work pants. Back in the 90's, I had a falling out with Duluth. However, I recently purchased a waist apron tool belt of theirs. I may have to take another look at their product line. They went all upscale, like that other winter clothing line, Eddie Bauerr I think it was. You and your viewers who have an interest in kneepads my find some insite from this KZfaq video kzfaq.info/love/dPAKxqMNltjOOM8QSamNNQ best, --- Reese Turbin, August 09, 2017
