Absolutely invaluable information for this newbie. This is going to not only save me a lot of money but also help me feel freer and less guilty when I practice or mess up a painting. It also solves my enormous small space issue. Now I can just stack the canvases up together when done (separated by glassine) in a much smaller space than stretched canvases would require. Thank you for this invaluable video!

I'd love to see more in this series - just to see how you organise yourself. When your strips of painted canvas are drying, how do you do it? I've used trouser hangers before, to suspend paintings from, which has worked well, but would love to know what you do.

@MichaelKingArt

I do. My advice for this is to roll them up loosely so there is not a lot of strain on the paint. Depending on how old a painting is I would say acrylic is more flexible and can tolerate being rolled up longer. That being said I have a painting rolled up for a couple years now and it is fine.

It is. Many people do it. Yes, oil paint can be more brittle depending on medium used, driers used and how long it has been dried for. Stretch it so it is taught. No need to go crazy.

On a large canvas I can see this being an issue. Even if you try to stretch it onto the wall and hold it down with a lot of tacks I think it will still buckle. Unfortunately, nothing comes to mind on how to fix that.

@MichaelKingArt

If you roll it too tight there is always a chance. Roll it loose and make sure the paint layer is on the outside as you roll. This ensures the paint layer is not put under compression.

Very nice video. Love it! But one question, when do you varnish the piece? Can you roll it after varnish?
@MichaelKingArt

I would probably varnish after I mount it or stretch it. That said, you could roll it after varnish but roll it with the painting on the outside and keep the roll large. If you get too tight there is a greater chance that it will start to crack.

Hi Michael, Just one question. When you finish your MASTER PIECE, and you are going to put it on a STRETCHER/ FRAME Do you allow the paint pigment to completely dry out say for a couple of month before you put it on a frame and does this put a STRAIN on the PAINT PIGMENT THERE FOR CRACKING OF THE PAINT FILM ETC!! THANKS;-)

+zeta reticuli I usually will mount the small pieces to board and then frame. For larger pieces I would wait at least 6 months before placing on stretchers and make sure I do not stretch as much as I would unpainted canvas to lessen the strain on the paint.

I want to try painting on primed hard board first tho. THANKS!

@@MichaelKingArt Thank you so much for your reply. Is it a lot different with primed board in terms of paint grabbing the surface, compared to linen? Are you saying you would stay with primed boards if you could, even large, if it was somehow as practical as canvas? What would you prime a board with for OIL paint? Any elaboration is appreciated. Thanks!
@MichaelKingArt
@MichaelKingArt 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I prefer the harder and smoother surface of board. You can prime it with an oil primer like Gambling Ground, which is an artist grade primer.. I have had others tell me hardware store Zinnser oil primer and even Tremclad primer work. Zinnser tends to yellow a bit over time I find and I have not tried tremclad. If you cover the entire surface in paint, the yellowing shouldn’t be a concern I would think. Research and testing is best. :)

@@MichaelKingArt The best of luck with all your ventures! I hope you don't mind one last question: Do you ever use a heavy staple gun instead of glue? That is how my art teacher taught the class several years ago. I must say your demonstration seems to make things so efficient as well as easy; but I would appreciate your take on the stapling method. We had to fold the canvas material onto the underside of the frame and staple well. I, personanly, couldn't get the canvas fabric to be "tight as a drum" or even taut. Sorry for taking up your time.......
@MichaelKingArt
@MichaelKingArt Жыл бұрын
Just saw this. Yes I have. If you make the canvas three inches wider on every side you will have room to ‘stretch’ the canvas onto the stretcher bars and then not have to glue it. This works best for larger pieces I find. Sorry for the late reply.
@chayita7
@chayita7 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, Michael, another question (the last?) but it's important: Can I really decide, at will, on ANY SIZE PAINTINGS I want? (That is the reason your approach excited me.) In actuality I am still dependent: upon ready-made pre-determined sized stretcher bars or ready-made wooden frames instead of the ready-made canvases. (The only other option is frequenting carpentry shops to cut frames according to size each time-- not very convenient.) Perhaps I am missing something. I would greatly appreciate if you could show me how I am wrong. I've aready cut pieces of rolled canvas for a couple of pictures. Thanks once again, Chaya.
@MichaelKingArt
@MichaelKingArt Жыл бұрын
You found the limitation for most people. Everyone likes easy framing, which means sticking to the ‘standard’ sizes, which I find limiting. Yes, you can decide on any size painting you want, BUT it will need custom stretchers or a custom frame. Custom stretchers are easy, perhaps I need to make a video 🤔, and a custom frame takes a bit more work. The freedom has a trade off. Hope that answers everything.

@@MichaelKingArt It's not that I'm looking for an easy way out..Fitting the canvas material to the frame or stretcher bars doesn't faze me. But I still don't understand how I can choose my own size if I'm limited to the dimensions of the frames or bars sold in the store????
