Difference before and after is not so noticeable on video like in real, it's so much better, even with more drained battery starter spins faster and engine starts easier. That is night and day difference. Ideally you want to replace starter brushes and if possible disassemble gear mechanism clean it and lubricate it.

I'd like to thank you for this video. I am a farmer and on Saturday at 3pm my tractor wouldn't start. The starter smoked a bit on its last try and I assumed it was dead. I watched your video then took my starter apart. I had nothing to lose since the tractor store was closed 'till Monday. It was extremely dirty with oily, greasy dirt. I cleaned it well and reassembled it. After that, I bench tested it (another YT video) and it worked! Today it has been working much better than before and I've transplanted cauliflower, zucchini and summer squash. I'd be down for days sourcing a new starter without this video. It feels good to solve a problem and keep trucking. Thanks man!

Nice cleaning up. A tricky part is pushing and holding back the four brushes while inserting the commutator. Several ways: Tie wraps, a socket under them, etc. You should also try to disassemble the gear reduction box, clean and grease. You should replace the brushes too if you can find them.

Thanks! Good tips 😉Brushes was in good condition and to replace them need to solder connection and to buy new ones need special order so I decided to leave original and over all this starter is pretty complicated. For more simple starters I agree with you 100%, do everything while you there ✌

Thanks for this, I thought that my parents were going to have to spend a couple hundred on a new starter motor for our Subaru Liberty GX 1995, but I instead went down to the garage (the car was parked outside because it wouldn’t run to get in) and I gave it a bit of a polish. Admittedly I shouldn’t have but I decided that it was a better option.

I used to work in a starter repair factory. We would do about 150 a day. If you want to strip a sealed solenoid then here`s how. First of all get the solder hot and flick the solenoid so the solder flys out the hole. Once the wires are all clear then get some nice thick angle iron. Drill three holes matching the solenoid attaching holes. Then drill one in the middle of the holes big enough to fit a 3/8th extension bar. Put a socket in the solenoid hole that fits nice. Screw the screws through the angle iron and into the solenoid holes. Be careful not to go to far as the copper windings inside will be damaged. So you might need washers. Just wind in with you hand to save damage. Once the solenoid is fitted to the angle iron then insert the 3/8 extension bar through the middle hole. Get a big vice and put 2 big spacers each side of the solenoid and put in the vice so the extension bar is on one jaw and the 2 big spacers with the solenoid are on the other jaw. Then close the vice and the extension bar should push the solenoid apart. When it apart you have to open the metal case with a hammer to get it back together to get rid of the lip.

I came to youtube to find a video on rebuilding a starter for my LeSabre hoping to teach my daughter's like. My daddy taught me back in the 80's when I was like 12 or 13. Sadly he passed when i was 17. I hated having to sit there and watch and listen to him teach me(teenagers right) now I'm blessed he had shown me so much stuff to do with cars & motorcycles. Thanks for making this video. It brought back sad but heart warming memories. Now I can pass this knowledge on to my daughters. P.s. wish you would of posted what you was used to clean the parts. Like was it a hard bristle brush? Was the blue thing sand paper? If so what grade? And thank you💞💞💞

My starter seems to be having an intermittent issue, although sometimes there’s another issue where my dashboard is wonky and my fuel pump doesn’t prime so it may be that in combination. Regardless once it starts priming again I get a click at the starter but it doesn’t turn even directly engaging the starter so it may be fixable without even rebuilding it, just a cleanup

Brilliant demonstration ♠️ Do you think it'd be possible to bring a marine starter motor back to life, it was partially submerged in fresh water for about three months, Its hard to explain, but the top part with the cables on was not under water nor was the rear of the unit, because of the angle of the engine only the front bit that goes into the engine was fully submerged.. @@henrilica483 My brother has the same problem on his 1.9 TDI. Snags the key from your hand when cold but a bitch to start when warm/hot. They usually get that with age: starter not at 100% cranking power, battery the same, leads that get a bit corroded and whatnot. The fix: the high route is to get the ECU flashed; the low (and much cheaper) route is to install a TDI Hot Start Magic Button where you're bypassing the coolant temp sensor only for when you hot start the car, tricking the ECU into thinking the engine is stone cold and squirt more fuel and faster. That's what my brother has on his Golf and it works. Everytime. This dude explains it overall but I'm sure you can find more about it online: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qM6Wns17stq6g4k.html&app=desktop Now for the Overboost it's more likely the VG part in the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) that TDIs have. Either the vacuum thing that moves the vanes inside the turbo that control flow and turbo RPM is...well...broken...OR the vanes are sticking open/closed. I've seen some videos of people squirting oven cleaner inside the hot side of the turbo to break up the carbon and free the vanes. Search for that. Cheers!
@davecc0000
@davecc0000 3 жыл бұрын
@Henri: if by "start" you mean that it cranks fine when hot or cold, but that the engine won't "catch" (start running by itself) quickly when warmed up, that could be many things. Could be temp sensor reporting that the engine is still cold and giving too much fuel when warmed up. Does the exhaust smell like raw gas at all? This is an indication of over-rich mixture and possibly a temp sensor gone bad. The engine isn't "chipped" is it? If so, all bets are off. You have to go to the "chipper" company and ask them.

It's an excellent idea for salvaging starters instead of throwing them out or buying a new one. I bought my starter from Autozone with a lifetime warranty and returned it for a new one when it died. Unfortunately, I have done this several times with my Chrysler Town and Country 2014, saving me time and money. Chrysler dealer in Tampa Fl. wanted $1100 to replace my mini van, of course, I found another alternative.

solid. i just did my 911 and not only saved a few hundred but also got the car back on the road in a day. some tricks that may be helpful for other cars: 1. mark the orientation of EVERYTHING with a paint pen as you disassemble 2. i used red scotchbrite for the brushes and armature 3. clean everything with electrical contact cleaner 4. use small zipties to hold the brushes in the holders as you reassemble 5. then place the largest socket that will fit inside the brushes to hold them compressed and cut the zipties 6. reassemble rock and roll.

Excellent video. Just replaced starter motor on my boys VW Polo with a recon unit. The old one started the car without a problem but after most starts would emit a short, 1 sec grating sound, any idea what bit was failing and if it's a DIY fix as per your video?

Thank you! Sounds like broken return spring or return solenoid itself is bad.

I would also try to regenerate the battery with some desulfation system

what type of bearing grease did you use here in the video on the starter for the BMW ?
@Work_G
@Work_G Жыл бұрын
I can't remember exact one but it is not critical because all bearing greases can handle heat pretty well

If one is not comfortable doing this on their own, what kinds of shops can do this service? I just switched out an old starter motor on my 2014 Honda Accord and want to get the old one repaired or reconditioned, ready for the next replacement in the future.

They might charge you 50% or more of what it cost to buy a starter. Depends on the vehicle of course.

What if there is power at the starter motor but the motor is not spinning and my car isint cranking at all does that still mean I can clean it out or do I have to change the whole thing? My car is a automatic Honda Civic 2003 model

When you turn key to on position and do not hear anything solution usually is to change whole starter motor (if battery is good). But it can be many issues, starting from ignition assembly, corrosion on starter electrical connectors, or starter solenoid failure or even locked engine and so on.

Cleaning certainly helped. But at only 12.2v, that's a tired battery!

i have a startmotor of a nissan primera that doesnt work.. it ticks but it doesnt start. so its clear the problem is in the startmotor and not the relais. do you think it would help if i cleaned mine up as well? or mayby it is the cable thats going towards the motor because it looks like it has corrosion on the inside.

It can help, first try to hit starter motor with hammer and it should work again than it is worth cleaning and changing brushes, if not just replace it

@Work_G

Thanks! If you hear only clicking that means shaft goes out but not spinning. It can be fixed by cleaning connectors, relay inside solenoid or replacing brushes

Make for a nice cleaning video but not to sure on the making it like new again. And I say this as nothing was replaced just cleaned up.

It’s not a rebuilt it is just a cleanup? While you were at it I would have changed the contacts in the solenoid/relay, it is what fails first, typically. On my Toyota Sienna it’s $6 to $16 depending on how many parts you charge (just one contact to two contacts + plunger). The brushes seemed ok. They are the second point of failure.
