People saying the head pastry chef was mean all the time - yes, she mentioned the time, but she also took care to mention whenever he did something well and offered positive reinforcement. She never even directly said "you're too slow", but something like "we could move a little bit quicker".

Additionally, although doughnuts aren't his thing, DeVonn knows kitchens and kitchen time pressure. None of the feedback fazed him because it's just normal. He has received and undoubtedly given exactly the same feedback in countless other situations.

This pastry chef shows really some great leadership! She just says we're behind on time but don't let it intimidate you, just do the best job possible. And she gives great compliments as she sees he is motivated and also shows him what she sees when the doughnuts are fried. I would personally be a lot more frustrated with someone at the front of the house coming in and saying there are only four of the twenty-five tastes on the shelve and they get to open in a few minutes. That intimidates trust in the back of the house a lot more, but Jessica kept calm and trust in him, and handled it great. Eventually seeing the milk frother of the coffee machine covered in residue would make me think front of the house would have something else to care for.

@@JonathanOstrander the comments between everyone involved in this video are dripping with passive aggression. Someone did not prepare for this shoot. Whether it was the donut shop or the Bon Appetit crew is not clear. Maybe the crew showed up later than they were supposed to, or maybe the shop didn't take into account the fact that *they're shooting video*-you know: like the kind with a presenter, and they're not just starting off a new worker... Given the prevalence of small/local business owners who are absurdly irrational and given that we already know they're a donut shop with wacky ideas about timing that includes opening at 9 AM (wat) and they made the choice *not* to say, "this isn't going well-let's try again tomorrow if possible, but we need to scuttle this attempt so we can get back on track/make up for the lost time", it seems reasonable to conclude that it involved *at least* a little bit of unpreparedness on the part of the business.

@@t4squared Eh. I've lived here for 22 years now. I know the deal. All these NYC based bakeries/donut shops that start to get any sort of buzz think they've turned into Studio54 w/ the attitude towards their employees. Which in turn trickles down to the customers. I've seen it with all of them. I'm just glad I got a preview so I don't waste my time, because yes I've heard of the lines. my guess is that production was running behind in one way or another, so that's kind of why they kept saying it. So it might have come off like it was specific to him, but more of a general side eye at production (or even something possibly like doughnut store saying "come at 5" and BA saying "lets do 5:30 instead" and the shop agreeing for one reason or another (like wanting the press or something))

@@vinwulff That's not passive aggressive, it's called being straight forward. He's there to make a show and has to be entertaining and has all the time in the world, which is fine, it's his job. This is her career/life. Do you expect her to not let him know that there's a deadline to make? Unfortunately this isn't a segment of just making doughnuts. They are in a business setting. They do not have all the time in the world for him to learn and play around. She could not have been nicer either. If dinner service was approaching and I still had tasks to complete and my Chef told me I was behind, it would not be considered passive aggressive. I'm so confused with the disdain towards the lady. If you need any more proof that the comments people are leaving on this video are misogynistic, take a look at the video Brad did for this series and the intensity of the supervision he had. No negative comments there. I wouldn't be surprised if the BA producers even cued the staff to emphasize the time crunch for the sake of entertainment. These women both struck me as patient and excellent at what they do. Worth reflecting on why seeing that makes you feel like they're too much.
