In today video we are out in the fields as we release our 4 weanling heifers after treatment for a cough, our in calve heifers also come in for winter. At home the drying off period has started with the first 10 of our cows getting the annually dose and trim. A new hook dosing gun has gotten of to a poor start!

I always found a hook dosing gun useless when the cow was held in the crush gate. However if you fill the race and go down dosing each one where she stands the cow in front will keep her head up when you remove the hook stopping her from dropping her head and losing product by spitting it out, I always catch the last one at the front again so that you are never dosing the one at the very front in the headlock. It’s worth trying, very speedy when you get the hang of it.

Glad to hear you feeling a bit better Adrian, the old Covid is no joke having had it myself a few times. Had to laugh at the calves trying to get away on you. Its like the animals know you are feeling under the weather and decide to play up, you will be glad you have no sheep, they seem to wait to the worst time possible before acting up. 🙄

Just goes to show, farmers still have to tent to there jobs regardless how they feel. It’s a great thing for people to see. Your animal husbandry is second to none, them cattle are a credit to you. We use fishing line here to tie off the warts/berry’s, works a treat. Them dosing guns are messy, we just add a little extra dose to compensate for it. Great video Adrian

Was at a meeting run by my veterinary practice a few years ago. One of the vets said that a head scoop was a better investment than the hook drenchers as the animals would spit some out most of the time.

I watch some of #TWIV weekly clinical updates with Daniel Griffin. From what I understand some people should be getting paxlovid, straight away. Take it easy, some COVID infections can really take it out of you for a while. Some people have long COVID, that's quite scary. IndieSAGE have episodes on that. It's possibly similar for some cases to some cattle that get pneumonia and are left with lung scarring. I hope you make a full recovery.

We bought that exact gun and had the same issues with it. There was more on the floor than in the cattle even with a scoop. The product ran out of the hook onto the floor emptying the pipe and when you squeeze the gun half times you felt like it was only refilling the pipe. A very frustrating and expensive enough failed trial on our part. Still haven't got a efficient replacement.
