Not bad! I did'nt knew the 2x2a is such a powerful source. BTW, the old soviet 2x2a tubes are better suited than their US counterparts, as the bell inside has sharp corners. The US-tubes, esp. the later ones made by RCA have a rounded edge along the bell, this design produces far less radiation (which is desired behavior for normal use in appliances).

Nice video. But I wouldn’t have done the finger part, you have no way of knowing how many x-rays you produce, there could be tons of (more dangerous) soft x-rays that the Geiger Counter can’t pick up
@sciguy31284 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I tried to keep those to a minimum with an aluminum metal filter at the opening. The tube is also surrounded by mineral oil, so hopefully those things keep most of the soft X-rays from leaving the machine.

Honestly I don't know the voltage he's using but to my knowledge if his power supply is generating somewhere around 60k to 80k and the amount of time exposed,he maybe received around 1 mSv now keep in mind it takes 1000 mSv or 1 sievert to raise your chance of getting cancer by 5% so it would take somewhere around 1000 days of exposure like this to to do any real harm at all

I'm contemplating building an "x-ray machine" for the purpose of making it easier to dabble in mutation breeding with a bit more control. Personally, I would not be anywhere near the thing, shielding or not (unless the shielding was a lot better than you have here) when it's making x-rays.

have you tried this dentalfilm with beta/gamma sources? i have some and am trying it out but dont want to waste too much if you already know the right exposure rate

Awesome job. I heard somewhere that you can produce x-rays from parts of old tv, is that true?
@rwy-ug6pl4 жыл бұрын
partly but you need other resources. It would be easier to make one from scratch because you would have to remaster a lot of the components.

Make a low freq flyback driver using the output transistors and the flyback(there tons of schematics online), then you can connect it to a big vacuum tube such as the HV rectifier tube on old tube tvs(they were used until ~1970-1975)
@judebox11854 жыл бұрын
Hey, awesome project youve got here, that finger one looks incredibly good and comparable to a real machine. So, I purchased this on ebay after hearing one guy that said he used it for an x ray machine: ZVS Tesla coil Booster High Voltage Generator Plasma Music Arc Speaker Kits 20KV So I have a question, is that enough and would 2 tubes make a better image? If i were to buy 2 would I need 2 high voltage sources?
@sciguy31284 жыл бұрын
I think your power supply at 20kv is probably good, assuming it is a ZVS flyback driver. You can use it to drive a flyback, and most of those have a HV diode built in, so you'll get DC out. As for your two-tube idea, no, I don't think that's a good idea. If you have two tubes, you will have two sources of X-rays from two different places. As a result, the image will include two separate "shadows", and this will look weird. It also probably won't increase the X-ray power, since you'll just place twice the load on the supply, so it's voltage will drop. Anyway, I hope I answered your question. Good luck with your project!
@judebox11854 жыл бұрын
@@sciguy3128 thanks very much, it is indeed a flyback driver so I should be ok, it says it needs an input of 12v 5a so I guess ill look for a cable that can do that

hey again, I just realised i forgot about film and im stuck between 2 choices, an intensifier screen or dental x ray film like yours, here is the screen: www.ebay.ie/itm/X-ray-Image-Intensifier-Screen-for-experiments-with-x-ray-tube-x-ray-photografy/253987892134?hash=item3b22dbaba6:g:070AAOSwVFlT8niH my tube is a 6vs-1 so maybe its not strong enough?
@sciguy31284 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm late. Go with the film for permanent images, and the intensifier for fluoroscope-like images.
@judebox11854 жыл бұрын
thanks, The fluoroscope images soudns more appealing since it should have infinite use? If my tube with 20kv dc can make it work it would be great, but some videos i saw said that it didnt react, maybe becasue there werent enough x rays, maybe long exposure could fix that. just a thought

@sciguy31284 жыл бұрын
I don't have a patreon, but I'll tell you the materials I used. For the shielding: 0.75 cm thick wood boards for the structure, 1 mm thick lead sheets from United Nuclear. For the electronics and tube: 2X2A vacuum tube, Mineral oil for insulation, 60 kv induction coil power supply from Scisupply. For the X-ray film: Ebay self-developing dental xray film. That's pretty much it. Just some wires and some soldering to be done on the shielding. Geiger counter is GMC-320+
@subschallenge-nh4xp4 жыл бұрын
can I get to vacuum from old radio or TV?
@sciguy31284 жыл бұрын
I believe so. If I'm correct, the 2X2A is a high voltage rectifier tube, so it is probably in some very old television sets or the like. To be honest, I'd recommend just buying one on ebay. They are like 15$ and work fine for this.
