This week on Our Off-Grid House Build nothing will stop us from installing these floor beams for our Pier and Beam foundation! We push hard and work in moonlight, cold and rain to finish installing the first and second rows of floor beams.
The house will he 54 feet long, and it was a huge milestone when we finished the first row of floor beams and were able to walk the entire distance of the house from end to end.
The second row of beams was much more difficult to reach with the Tractor so we had to be inventive and find a new way to lift the floor beams "longitudinally".

I love your tractor. I have a slightly smaller Kubota and I envy your horsepower on this one. But not enough to upgrade! I have the quick release bucket also, and wasn't sure why you didn't lift the beams on the forks. Like your work and, as a marriage and sex therapist, really appreciate your couple's dynamic!

Thanks for joining us! Yes, that kubota tractor is awesome around the homestead 😊 we were between the B26 and the L47 and decided to go with more HP. Glad we did now!

Hi You should get some shackles and a chain to add onto your slings, remove the bucket from the tractor, put the shackle on the tractor where the bucket goes and hang the beam from it This would gave you a lot more movement with the beam ,this would also mean you wouldn't have to keep taking the beam off and on the slings each time and it would be a lot safer, I'm enjoying watching your channel Happy New Year

two things: at the end of the video, I was like noooo, I need to see more - so that earned my sub. And watching the kids exploring their environment, building things with scraps (problem solving/critical thinking/creative thinking and doing) gives me hope for the future! These children will know how to survive because they will have learned the necessary skills - as parents, and DIYers, you get an A+!!

Justin on the holes it will not hurt for the holes to be larger especially the countersink. In fact you want it to have some play so if it is not perfect you can move the beam around and align the beams to your string line before tightening it down. Just a thought.

Justin I appreciate that you want everything to be perfect, but as my dad would always say “we ain’t building no watch” so yes I think the holes could be a touch bigger. He also would say “it’s good enough for government work”. Now if you were building a cabinet, that’s different.
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 ай бұрын
Haha, "Good enough for Government work..." I love it! Yes, you are right, in hindsight I would've just used a larger diameter counterpart bit. The bolts were 3/4" and I used a 7/8 auger bit, and I think that was fine. The biggest issue was that counterbore.

Looks like a grueling job. I think I'd weld a permanent hook to the back of the bucket as someone suggested, and use a combination of an engine hoist leveling sling and swiveling shackle. Also, why not try some whiteout or something to make the marks easier to see?
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 ай бұрын
Yeah good points, probably could work. I would be worried that welding a hook on the bucket might interfere with the digging. I just didn't think about using paint or anything to mark the hole, but hindsight is 20-20. I'm sure there are a thousand ways to do this job more efficiently but in the end I'm just doing the best with what I have available and it is getting the job done 😁

You should rig something for the front bucket to put up the beams without using the strap it would be so much easier to set them it would really help

Amazing project and beautiful family you have there! As a diy myself Im interested in building a pier and beam foundation for a cabin as well though without having to hire a engineer for approval to satisfy are county inspectors in are area, is there a different way to approach this build style or or just simply build it and remain off grid? Thanks Nate
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 6 ай бұрын
Hi Nate, thanks for joining us 😊 We wish you the best with your off grid cabin build! In our County we were able to design our own house plans and obtain a building permit for the house build WITHOUT hiring an architect or structural engineer. The county DID require us to get a licensed engineer to stamp our Solar System design. In our county we are also able to do all the work ourselves on the house, as the owners, without hiring a licensed contractor. That being said, your area might have different requirements. Some counties are more stringent and others less. You'll have to decide whether it is worth going through the permitting process or just building on your own land without a permit. If you decide to go through the permitting process, as we are, you will have to ensure to meet every requirement of the County building codes, including all required building inspections (It's a good idea to build to code anyways, even if you choose not to get a permit). I hope that helps a bit!

Justin, you're a machine! When I was a teenager and worked summers with Dad in construction, he would always say when it started raining "C'mon, keep workin. You might rust but you won't melt!" lol With the tractor, can't you go between the piers to approach from the other side?
@DIY_or_DIE
@DIY_or_DIE 7 ай бұрын
Haha, that is some good solid advice from your Dad! The tractor is just a bit too wide to squeeze between the piers so I had to come in from the side.
