I repot my first ever Privet bonsai stump today (14 April). I also use the ‘screw’ securing technique for the first time.

Another new bonsai catchphrase to adopt - lol. Thanks Nigel. It is brand new for me and I have tended to stay away from these big lumps because my carving is at best 'juvenile'! I want to see how far I can with it using clip and grow but I do fear wire may be required to stop those branches from seeking the sun :)

I agree totally - in truth I am going to leave it alone for a year and let it recover and put out new growth before making any big decisions. It's my first time for this species so I am going to be careful. Where do you see the front then?
@Tinoshke07
@Tinoshke07 Жыл бұрын
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I would have a good look at the present sides if they couldn't become the front or even the present back. Those parts might give you a better trunk base. It's best to wait a few months, see how it evolves and only maybe next Spring make the big decisions.

Xav, I know where you’re coming from but I, despite my horticultural background hadn’t heard of Harry Harrington, Tony Tickle, Dan Barton and others in their league until many months into my ‘bonsai journey’ (ie last Autumn) thus holding me back immeasurably!! These ‘big guns’ are reliable teachers and invaluable for beginners, rarely mentioned on other channels so how are we to hear of them? It’s not about numbers of subscribers but quality of content. I rest my case!! God bless your endeavours 🙏✝️. ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️

Rescued hedging material always presents its own challenges. You might consider NOT eliminating that fat trunk and instead carving the center of it such that each of the smaller branches looks as if it arises from a more tapered trunk. That would reduce the bulk and save those branches and eliminate the potentially problematic negative space. I tried this technique with a huge rescued buxus (box). I got the idea from Blue Sky Bonsai. We'll see how my tree recovers from the root and top work it suffered.

Not a species i care for but you have got this one looking half decent. I think you could carve rather than remove the 2nd and 3rd trunks to lose some visual weight without sacrificing the foliage.

Blimey that was cheap Xav even for a privet, it’s a case I came I saw and conquered, they make great bonsai I have a few some very large and some not but they all have a presence. The big pot is probably for the best it will give it the best chance to thrive Xav, I love working on them they grow very rapidly, I personally would leave the carving for another year once the tree is settled in the pot. I wouldn’t even wire it yet just let it fill out then decide the front. All the best with it mate.

@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat Hi Xav I think you are at the end of the potting time about now although I have repotted up to the end of May, I know of some say you can repot privet at any time,but I think that is wrong unless it is slip potting and not pruning roots which is ok, I believe it is better to over pot them for the development period to create a strong healthy root system, then reduce the pot size. Hope this helps.
