As someone with 60 apple trees It is common for many varieties to not start producing apples for 3-5 years. Out of all my varieties honey crisp is my least favorite, it is not as strong as many varieties, shows stress easily and seems to be susceptible to disease. My all time favorite is Zestar apple but does take a while to start producing. If you want an apple that starts producing right away I recommend Prairie Magic. Big beautiful apples, sweet flavor and the tree structure is beautiful!

My kids laugh at me because my favorite thing to say is "Look at Laura over there living MY best life"!!! I envy you but in a happy way...not in jealousy but excitement for you and seeing the "fruit" of all of yours and Aaron's hard work!

Some weeding, pruning citrus, replanting flower pots! Thankful for the rain Hilary brought to my small terraced yard in Southern California. Didn’t need the Ojai earthquake but, thankful for no damage!

I know most viewers don't understand the gift of a large rainstorm, because they get deluged in the east/south. I also live in high desert, Colorado, and rain without wind storms is rare. You did an amazing job in the orchard. Maybe you can go into more detail with your spray choice, organic etc. and process of keeping them bug free. The nectarines look spotless!🧡

While it is hard to see all that fruit come off the trees, it is apparent that it is necessary and for the best. It is amazing how much those trees can produce though!! Wow! And like many of us here, I am so glad the pigs get to enjoy it, so it is not really wasted after all! 😊

If trees could talk!!! You could see the heavy burden they were holding onto until came along to relieve them of all that fruit. How sweet to see their branches rising up!

I had apple coddling moths at our last house. In a real big old tree. Captain Jacks works if you do the spray about four times in the season. I also bought traps to hang in the trees to signal me when they were active enough to begin the first spring spray. The coddling moth worms eventually crawl down the trunk to over winter in the soil. I couldn’t find any data how to effectively stop them on their route down or back up in the spring. Or to kill them in the ground. Our apples were so delicious that we’d eat them in the fall or make unpeeled applesauce in a simplified sugar free process then I’d can them. I’d rough cut the core out if there was worm damage. It was usually minimal even if I only sprayed once. Dave Wilson Fruit Tree Nursery in Modesto CA has a technique to keep the trees much shorter than yours so they’re easier to pick. He’s been around a long time but I’ve only recently discovered him. Thanks for all your hard work and posting. I learn a lot from you!

I have an orcharding background...apples in eastern Washington. When the fruit starts getting bigger, you prop the branches to keep from breaking the branches! Of course, good job for lightening the load...but you'll benefit from propping later on!

My husband did not believe me when I said we had to thin our nectarine tree! He kept saying, "Don't pull any more fruit or we won't have any!" I kept warning him that it would get to point where the tree would suffer and the weight from the fruit would snap branches (it did 2x) and we could end up losing the tree. We thinned over 100 lbs this season and we still had tons of fruit that didn't get eaten. Crazy! We finally pulled all the fruit and gave it a massive haircut so next year it won't produce as much. I've heard you can thin by spraying spring blooms off with your hose to help with this kind of problem. 😅

5:23 I have a peach tree also, it’s pretty big but I never stayed on top of it and honestly it’s bc then I didn’t know any better but it still produces so many fruits we have to give away bags to neighbors, friends, and family.

Zone 8 Northern Arizona here. We missed most of the brunt of Hilary but always grateful for any showers we get. 😊

Those are going to be some happy pigs! What a tremendous amount of fruit! We had a few apple trees but the deer always enjoyed them before the apples were ripe. Oh well-it was fun to watch them harvest!😅

Laura, how about Surround kaolin clay for your apples? A You Tuber named James Prigioni (the only other one I watch) says he never has to spray his fruit trees when he uses it, the clay covers the fruit and prevents the bugs, etc. It's completely safe.

It was so great to see the branches actually rebound as you relieved them. I kept saying 'Give them to Bethany's pigs'! When you said they were going to her pigs I hooted out loud !!!

6inches of rain here in the past 2 days from torrential downpours, hardest I've seen it rain in a long time alot of urban flooding, but in the countryside just elevated rivers as we still hadn't fully recovered from the spring drought in May and June

Watching in fast mode, I could see some of the branches moving upwards with the release of the weight of the fruit. I could almost hear the trees saying, “Ahhhhh….thank you, Laura!” 😊

I remove the grass out to the drip line and replace it with pine straw. This allows me to edge and mow around the trees and prevents weeds from growing under the tree canopy and competing with the tree. Also makes it easier to apply fertilizer since the lawn fertilizer is different from the tree fertilizer.

Laura, don't let thinning and removing fruit. That is part of farming. It needs to be done, and it is not a waste. I remember growing up around apple orchards. They staked branches. Enjoy your day.

I just planted a nectarine tree last June. It looks great in spite of the tropical storm that passed. I can’t wait to see it next spring when it blossoms.

I saw this stuff for the first time on The gardening channel with James Prigioni on KZfaq. He uses something called Surround Kaolin Clay on his fruit trees (especially apples). It’s certified organic and doesn’t hurt beneficials. Maybe something for you to check out. Insects Controlled By Surround WP Kaolin Clay Cutworms, Midges, Slugs, Eastern tent caterpillar, sawflies, Gypsy moths, Apple maggot, Plum curculio, Japanese beetles, June beetles, Rose Chafer, Green fruitworm, Leafrollers, Periodical cicadas, Stink bugs, Thrips, Oriental fruit moths.

Hi Laura and Aaron. It was such a shame to see all the worm damage to the fruit on your apple tree. Have you ever used Surround Clay on your trees? It’s organic, and a good alternative if you don’t want to risk harming pollinators. In your drier climate, you won’t have to reapply as often either. Love your content!😊

I’m so happy you tackled the fruit thinning as soon as you were able. As the granddaughter of a well known Orchardist I cringed at how much that young tree was bearing. So much better! Things are looking just great; now I need a few Cinnamon Curl Birch trees.
