Processing an LAS Drone Point Cloud through ReCap and then importing into Civil 3D and Creating an Existing Surface

When working with relatively flat terrain like that try changing the Triangle Exaggeration in the Surface Style to anywhere from 2x to 10x. It only effects the display in the Object Viewer which really helps to visualize what is going on. (similar to how many construction plans utilize Profiles with exaggerated vertical scale.) Nice video BTW.

Good work stephen

you can also automatically clean up those extra triangles by using the maximum triangle length under your build options. Might not get rid of all of them, but it will get rid of most and then you'll have much less cleanup to do.

That’s a great point! I’ve used that function a few times, but forget that it’s an option until it’s too late most of the time!

Yep, Good tip. That's how I do it too: Surface Properties / Definition / Build / Use Max triangle length.

You want to make sure "insunits" in Civil is set correctly (21 is U.S. survey feet), otherwise the cloud will not be correct. Another tip is use LAZ rather than LAS (the file size will be significantly smaller and the import to Recap is much faster). Lidar tools "laszip" works well for that purpose.

Great tips Bud! Much appreciated!

@@stephenwalz3900 The insunits setting drove me crazy when doing photogrammetry. Nice vid btw.

great video, thanks for the clear commentary. Question: if I try to edit the settings to define the coord sys after import, will it mess up my drawing? I dont really want to restart my project but if necessary i will! Edit: I'll google this question also ;p

Is there anything to help if the point cloud is not automatically referencing the geolocation on civil 3d? I have the same Datums set for both recap and civil 3d

Assuming you’ve double checked units are identical in both Recap and Civil 3D as well prior to inserting? Maybe play around with the INSUNITS in C3D? If that doesn’t resolve, I’d be happy to take a look…feel free to send me a message at stevewalz@hotmail.com to troubleshoot further

when selecting your coordinate system, why did you pick GA?
@stephenwalz39004 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis! I selected GA since that's where the project is actually located, and was the intended projection...

Can you please tell me the type of the drone used?

To be honest, I don't recall...the data was provided to me from a surveyor
