Jim -- I'll tell you what makes your videos so good. It's that there is no pretense with you. You don't try to dress it up. It's just a country boy doing what he does. Also, you never stop learning, and you highlight those moments where there's improvement to be made. You're the real deal.

I love seeing repurposed wood. I had a guy tell me about his daughter building a new house on the old homestead, but they had to cut down some pine trees her grandmother planted over 80 yrs ago. So I threw my sales pitch that he should hire me to mill those logs up with my 60" CM. And use them as steps in the new house. So when grandma passes some day, they would have a memento. He thought that was a great idea😁. God has blessed her with a long life, she is 92 now.

Funny story- When i worked in the woods, the guy I worked for was always playing jokes, so one day the cutter & I was going thru the woods and we see this big hemlock, and he says cut that down, so I did , we skidded it to the log pile- Now where the guy was taking the logs, they only took hard wood- you guessed it, we loaded that right in the middle of the load, I was milking and I heard the air horn, here he comes, one log!!

Magnificent horses. They pulled that huge log and seemed to enjoy pulling it. Fill those holes with epoxy and you will have a beautiful bar or table top.
@williamwaha3193
@williamwaha3193 3 жыл бұрын
Some people use Cement mixtures or Granites to fill holes and give a swirled color pattern through the Cement / Granite and then epoxy the whole surfaces for a glossy finish that won't rot away , it would just depend on your ' artistic skills ' and materials that you use . There's a private family company in Erie, Pa who use these color schemes on ' stone ' looking counter tops in their construction / rehab jobs . Niche market woods have value depending on the artistic types who use them .
@WorkingHorsesWithJim

So much better to “select cut” rather than “clear cut” as loggers used to do. So much healthier for the forests, and the wood is savored and used without so much waste. Thanks, again. Wish you guys wore safety chaps over your legs though. Too scary to see if a chainsaw “bucks,” and they do.🥺
@hfbroady
@hfbroady 3 жыл бұрын
Agree. 95% of the logging that I have done was select cut. Sometimes clear cut was needed, most often for a house.
@melanieohara6941
@melanieohara6941 3 жыл бұрын
@@hfbroady Late 19th and 20th Century Timber workers out here in Wyoming would select cut with Skid horses. Then clear cutting became popular in our National Forests after World War II with big logging companies coming in to clearcut with enormous, heavy equipment, skidding with big trackers and slag piles with bull dozers. Enormous erosion followed with miles and miles of bare land hacked in chunks out of the forest, which never regrew. Heartbreaking eyesore for humans and devasting to wildlife, of course.😩

Happy New Year I so enjoy your channel and family and horses thank you for the time and courage it takes to give of yourself in this way. Does the cart help the horse get the log going easier? Hello Jim. Good video. I was having issues trying to get firewood skidded out of our farm woods with my ATV. The logs kept digging into the ground and the friction made it difficult to pull. When I hit a root or a rock, the machine would just dead stop. I figured that these are some of the same things you encounter when logging with horses. Have you considered a log arch for those logs that are just too big to skid comfortably behind your team? The one I built for my ATV could easily be scaled up. It straddles the log and when you pull forward the load comes off the ground and the chain slides up into a area of the arch where it locks itself until you back up. It relieves the friction by getting the nose of the log into the air and makes the pull easier for the ATV. If I can find a good email address for you, I’ll forward a photo to you of my design. Cheers! Happy New Year! Whipple
