I towed a flatbed trailer (1,500 lbs) with a medium tractor (4,500 lbs) with loader and backhoe on my land with virtually no road and up/down 10 mi long steep road with my 2004 4Runner (V6). Quite frankly, I barely felt those 6,000 lbs and had no issues with brakes.

Excellent video! We tow with our 4Runner regularly, but our setup is anything but stock. Things that help the most in our experience: Brake Controller (the 4Runner is prewired for this), Rear Spring Airbags (inexpensive to add and help leveling and sway), Stiffer Rear Springs (our current setup), and regearing to a better gear ratio (we are now running 4.56:1 gears over the stock 3.73:1 gears). Just some suggestions for anyone that "needs" to tow with the 4Runner. Cheers!!!

Great info, Mark, thanks. I'm looking to overland for an indefinite period and considering modding my 4R for towing. Do you know what the weight of your trailer is? And has it still been going well? From the video above it just seems like the vehicle would be constantly working so hard - like, fine for a weekend, but as a way of life maybe not so much. And he was just going over hills, while I'll be going over mountains. Do the mods really help? Do they either improve gas mileage or even reduce it further? Ugh, torn...

@@amy2brno2b The above modifications I mentioned have really made all the difference in the world for towing. Our trailer weight is right at 1,600lbs loaded (CAT Scale - June 19, 2021). Our trailer is a HEO (Highland Expedition Outfitters) T3.5 with an aluminum body/frame that is heavily modified and loaded up. Even with the light trailer, the tongue weight is high enough with my full steel rear bumper that the airbags have been a true life saver for ride quality and handling. I really have not found anything that helps with MPGs... The 4.0L V6 just isn't made to make good torque until you get into the higher RPMs. The higher RPMs means the more fuel you use unless you retune the engine. The biggest improvement I found was regearing. This helps the engine run at higher RPMs and makes it not work as hard. What this does for the driver is help with fatigue as you aren't fighting to find the right gear, and the drivetrain components are not under as much stress. The downfall is that the "taller" gear ratio you go with means the more RPMs. That translates to using more fuel when you are unloaded. We take our setup to Colorado several times a year (we are originally from Fort Collins area). Towing the trailer over mountain passes is a night-and-day difference when you regear, and we only went with 4.56 gears - 4.88 gears would be even better if you are doing full-time towing. The reason I went with 4.56 over a taller gear ratio is because this is also my daily driver. My 60 mile round trip to the office means I chew through fuel, and 4.88 gears would mean my fuel economy unloaded would go down as well. The other thing is that I live in Texas - land of 80 MPH Interstate Speed Limits. With the 4.88 or 5.29 gears, I would really eat up fuel to be at 80+ MPH. That being said - the 4.56 gears love to cruise at 80 MPH. I average 16 MPG with mud tires, bumpers, winch, extra fuel, hi-lift, armor, and a fridge when I am using my 4Runner unloaded as a daily driver. Towing will take me down to 13-14 MPG depending on conditions. The 4Runner is still much more comfortable to tow with after making all the changes I made. The biggest things that KILL your fuel economy - tire roll resistance, aerodynamics, and WEIGHT. I have all 3 working against me. Daily driving ~16 MPG Towing+Loaded ~13-14 MPG

I tow a 5K+ lb boat with my '13 15 times a summer. I added Air Lift bags to the rear springs to level the truck out. Sure, more torque would be nice, but the 4Runner gets the job done. It helps if the trailer is well balanced and has good brakes (I have disks on both axels).

I own a 2011 SR5 and wondered the same thing. I don't want to own a truck and love the 4runner. We bought an 18ft 3300lb dry travel trailer and rolled the dice with how well it could tow it. I've only towed it a few times but it was very hilly/mountainy and the rig did great and I didn't have the brake controller in yet (I was extra cautious). I was quite surprised how good it all felt and my mpg wasn't bad at all. I'm no towing expert so just my .02. I had to manually downshift a few times on inclines and it performed great. On a few big hills I put it in low gear to ease off the brakes but always felt in control. Trans was shifting crisp and quick when in manual. Worked great IMO and I plan on doing a lot of towing with it. Thanks for your video!!!

Great video. In reviewing my owners manual for my 4Runner, it requires trailer brakes if you tow more than 1655 pounds. It has a trailer brake controller plug from the factory that you can use to add a trailer brake, such as my Terkonsha unit. Over 2000 pounds you must use a sway control device and over 3000 pounds must have two axles on the trailer per the owners manual.

Are you actually towing with your 4Runner now? My TRD Premium has a placard that states a maximum of 835 lb payload capacity with a yellow amendment sticker that says "Payload is reduced another 50 pounds due to vehicle modifications". Seem like the limiting factor for a 4Runner wouldn't necessarily be the Tow Rating, but rather it's Payload Capacity. 3 adults + a 350 pound trailer hitch would put it over the limit.
@slcea7

@@TheJaxsonjack If I tow anything it’s very short distances with few people and gear inside the vehicle. You’re absolutely right that its payload is a huge limiting factor. I think if you want to tow something substantial or just frequently, you really just need a truck.

I believe Toyota recommends putting the vehicle in S4 (sequential shift, 4th gear max) to ensure the transmission doesn’t hunt for gears and the engine is in a more optimal RPM range for power. 4th is also the 1:1 or direct drive ratio. Not sure if you ever monitor these old vids, but I want to thank you for being the best review I could find. We purchased our 4Runner this winter after taking a chance (i.e. hoping your assessment was accurate for us) and this week hooked our 18' trailer up. The Toyota pulled it around town just fine and I am especially impressed by how well the trailer brakes are integrated; MUCH better than my truck's aftermarket controller. The hill we took it up did require some upshifting, as your video shows, but we are especially happy to find out that we can own a sub-half-ton and still travel with our trailer. MANY thank to you. We tow an Aliner which is about 2500 lbs, loaded, with our 4Runner. When it gets into the 8-10% grades uphill in the western states, yeah, it gets down on its knees, but never stops. Normal towing we get 15-16 mpg running at 60-65mph. Downhill, it has a wonderful gearing that holds it very well so we are not constantly on the brakes. We have a brake controller so that helps a lot. Overall, it tows well for trailers up around 50% or so of its tow capacity. It is a fun vehicle and tows great.

This was the best video I saw so far. 4-Runner would be the SUV I would buy if I want to tow a small trailer. Despite what many others said about the 5,000 lbs capacity, I would limit the trailer to no more than 3,000 lbs dry. (3,000+300 tongue+300 water +350 passengers = 3,950). I would be unrealistic otherwise. Still it will take he hills at 65 MPH. I think the 4-Runner would be the best tow vehicle for up to mid size trailer if it has more HP. Ideal wold be 7,000 lbs capacity.

Looks like it would just be too hard on the vehicle over time. I'm still considering it with mods, though, so I need to do a little more research. The consensus seems to be trailer brake controller, suspension air bags, transmission cooler, and possibly also regearing, supercharger, and better vehicle brakes. Then I'll have to try to decide if I think all those mods will really help enough to be worth doing them.

@@bebedubz559 Thank you. We love it. It's only two of us which is the perfect size, but our 80lb German Shepherd is kind of pushing it for space sometimes. lol When we are full loaded with camping gear, and grill, it is already a lot of weight in the 4R, so when I hitch the Casita, it does cause enough sag that my headlights rise (annoying to oncoming traffic.). It's not too bad and drives great, but enough to notice at night when our headlights are running high. But, I did install an Anderson Weight Distribution Hitch after our last trip, so we will see how that works. I am told we could just rearrange our gear to the camper to better distribute the weight and we should be good, but we will likely travel with a lot of gear and would prefer to have a WD hitch to be safe. For the price/features, it's hard to beat the Casita. It tracks like butter and I prefer the body on frame of the 4R to me previous unibody SUV, a Subaru Ascent. We haven't had long, but it is truly full featured and has good sized tanks, compared to others we looked at, we upgraded to the larger size water tank. Also, the carpet interior seemed odd at first, but after camping in 40 degree weather 2 weeks ago, it really seems to make a difference. Our heater didn't have to run that often to keep the camper at 70-72 degrees The 4R was a no brainer though. Wanted one for 20 years and it doesn't disappoint. It doesn't have near the features of my previous vehicles but it is sure footed and very capable, and most importantly has a reputation for reliability. In terms of MPG, I have been getting around 12-14, but that is with a LOT of weight in it. We are new to camping so we likely carry way more than we need. We scaled back each time we go, so probably after a dozen or so trips, we will be down to about 60-70% of where we are at now.

This has helped me, thank you. I was a commercial driver for 20 years and know what you are speaking of when you talk about how the tow feels. I am considering buying a 4Runner and may be towing a light travel trailer. I have thought of buying a Tundra but find the 4Runner to be more versatile and fun off-road. I have heard from people who tow teardrop trailers around 3,000 pounds and their experience is the aerodynamics of the teardrop makes towing a lot easier compared to a typical travel trailer. I think long-distance towing with the 4Runner with something under 3,000 pounds and with less wind resistance is not an issue. Certainly, something like a Casita or Escape would work well. I know of people towing those full-time with small crossovers.

Great vid! From what I understand, 4th gear is the gear to tow per the manual. It's too much on the transmission otherwise, constant shifting, etc. leading to overheating of the transmission. I try to baby my 5th gen. When I know it's going to downshift from 4th gear I just go ahead and lower the speed and take it easy. I've got a trailer brake and am towing a 21' travel trailer, keeping it at about 4,100 lbs. Using an equalizer hitch.

For reference. I have a 2019 Tacoma sport. I did the ov tune. I tow all the time. For work I tow a 6x14 v nose tandem axle. Probably 2800lbs with tools. On flat highway I' m usually around 18L/100 at 110km/hr. Even better at lower speeds.

After alot of research I found a 4wd RAM 1500 5.7 liter with 4.10 gears in the rear end. I tow a 3200 lb trailer + camping stuff and it can power up any hill. Living out west it was important to me not to have loaded semi trucks pass me up hills or worse try to pass on a two lane highway. That happened once and the truck almost head on crashed into an oncoming car. Another issue is cross winds and the surface area of a travel trailer giving you wag or sway and the needed extra weight of the two trailer. I love the RAM 1500 and it is a hot rod if not towing. The 4wd is there to get unstuck in 2" of mud if pulling off the road or not be afraid to go out in the snow.

I have three 2019 4Runners. Two Limited and One TRD OR. I regularly tow with each. The big issue with the Limited are those 20" Rims and Tires - those are heavy wheel/tire combo's for the 4Runner. I changed my Limited's wheels to TRD 17"'s and I cut +10lbs off of each corner (plus the 17"'s have their rotational mass closer to the wheel hub), that really helps with acceleration and braking. I have towed 7x14 cargo trailer's from NJ to FL at close to slightly over the maximum 5k rating with no issues. In FL I also tow a 4.5k boat/trailer combo from Tampa to the Key's - never had any issues - the great thing about using the 4Runner for boat trailering is that the shorter wheel base makes backing down launch ramps a breeze. You can see the TRD wheels that I put on my silver Limited, on this tread from Toyota-4runner.org: www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/287542-new-glossy-grey-trd-wheels.html#post3511668

Well made video! Great info! I've had my 5th gen SR5 Premium 4x4 for 5 years now and really love it. I've spent a lot of time pulling other cars out of snow banks, camping, 4wheeling etc... def a dream vehicle worth the money :) I've towed small trailers (~2500lbs) 1200 miles without a problem (roofbox too). My recent conundrum is if I have enough truck to tow a 3800lb travel trailer with the fam and all our crap... I installed an engine/trans cooler and air bags (internal shocks) and would also have a P3 trailer controller w/ weight distribution hitch. I don't really care that much about speed per se (sometimes you need it), but I just want to be safe. I guess my question is... should I see if someone wants to trade a 2500 diesel for my 4runner? :) ...

Never owned a foreign suv but usually if a vehicle has a hitch and a 7way installed from the factory it usually has a tow package with a tow/haul button brake controller optional. But for the most part if it doesn't have a tow/haul you lock the OD out and you'll be alright.

Just a heads up, but the car normally comes with a pigtail to wire up under the dash for a trailer brake controller. I have a tekonsha P3 in mine, & is awesome these come with all other necessary wiring to the 7-pin out back already in place. I was wanting to get one of these but was worried the engine wouldn't handle it, however, it seems no issue in your video; thank you!!

Finally the wife went outta town and left her 21 4runner so I got to tow see how it tows. I went threw alot of hills like this with cruise control on and it was interesting lol. I drive a work van with a v8 and have a gti with a 4 cylinder with a turbo. The 4runner engine and transmission reminds me of driving a piece of machinery or a tractor. It's weird at first because I'm use to a on road vehicle sounds a particularly way and shifting differently but after this video I'm more comfortable with how it reacted. Thanks for the Video! I tow a 12 ft utility trailer with one 5200lb axel on it. I use it for dirt bikes and or sport quads and heavy 4x4 atvs. Im curious how many yards of clean dirt I could safely haul threw flat town lol trail says not to exceed 3900lbs

I pulled a 32ft trailer that weighed 10k up and down tiger mountain pass with no rear brakes on the truck and no brakes on the trailer. It was hot that day and I had to remove the hood to keep it cool. The front brakes faded out and I had to keep it in 2nd while pulsing the brakes. I never went faster then 35. On the flats and highways, I do the speed limit. It's not that bad. I get 18mpg when not climbing passes. I use a weight distribution hitch and have 4.88 gears on 30s. That's with a 22r and a man behind the wheel. I routinely tow 5k with it. The truck is more then enough and gets diesel level fuel economy

I was wondering what you think how these mods might help or hinder my 2016 Trail w/ KDSS w/ 2.5in lift & upgraded with Bilstein shocks. The mods I was thinking about adding are a trans cooler, airbags in the rear, Magnusson Supercharger, brake controller/trailer brakes, and whatever the best hitch is to use to avoid sway. I'm trying to figure out if this would be enough to pull a 3,300lb double-axle camper safely for about 6k mile roadtrip in the Rockies.

@@amy2brno2b GVWR 3860, does ok as long as you take it slow. The hills of PA and Harper's Ferry had been OK. Packed too much on a beach trip to Delaware and it road heavy. Will refrain from hauling fire wood, 4R full of family, and trailer at the same time as that much weight really starts to bog it down. At 45 MPH, speeding down hills and going slow up I could almost get 13 MPG.
