The Bosch PDB40 is an adorable little drill press that comes with a less adorable little table. I've had the drill press for about two years, high time I make a proper little table for it with removable inserts, a fence, and better hold downs.

Thank you for this very clear video. The guide bushing discussion at 3:48 was the best explanation I have seen. I will build this plan of yours for mine. I have found this Bosch Drill Press to be excellent. The Bosch kit seems to be thoughtfully designed and well built. I have the SDS Bosch Blue Battery hammer drill, which invariably impresses the trades who see me using it, and then they borrow it,

Yep, convinced me too. I'm going to buy one and get rid of the large Chinese built, belt driven bench drill I have at the moment. Funnily enough, as a hobby woodworker, it was your comment about lightness and portability which clinched it for me and my very small shop.

Bought this drill press and am just now planning my workbench build. This helped me realise I don't want the drill press to be on permanent display since I am a weekend DIYer so it'd be great to be able to store this. I haven't unpacked mine yet - can you tell me the dimensions of your drill press with the table you built in it's most compact form? I want to check if I can plan for it to be stored under my workbench. Thanks!

What is the benefit of using an add-on plywood table on top of the native Bosch drill aluminum machined table? Plywood does not guarantee stable and precise geometric dimensions and will often show variations in order of tenths of mm. Besides humidity variations will introduce additional errors.

@TheWoodKnight 4 жыл бұрын
They're from timbecon. I've "standardised" on their t track and t track accessories as they're slimmer at 3/8" deep instead of 1/2" deep like other ttracks. All their accessories are 5/16" thread instead of 1/4", so a little harder to find threaded inserts to diy parts

I love the PDB40 that I use in Sweden. I just wish that Bosch sold a 110 version for when I move back to the US. I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and buy Nova's Viking DVR benchtop drill press.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 4 жыл бұрын
There's no "Bosch Green" in the US, is there? Its a bit weird they have never really released the green brand equivs under the Skil brand but with having sold that I guess they don't have a good "non-pro" brand to release such things under. US market too saturated?
@calebwhite1999
@calebwhite1999 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodKnight I have never seen any greens anywhere Bosch is sold. It really is too bad as the low end market is very hit or miss from tool to tool even within the same brand. I have had terible luck with Black and Decker and Skil whenever I have gone for the cheap option, but the green line from Bosch has always turned out to be a solid choice.

is there an advantage to using the router bushes? seems like a guided bearing bit is less steps and less room for error? as you wouldn't need to account for the offsets and have to create a dummy piece?
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 4 жыл бұрын
Dummy piece isn't *needed* but it is nice and quick to set everything in place. Using a (top) bearing guided bit is fine too, but can be trickier. You'd need a bit that isn't *too* long before it gets to the bearing OR you need much thicker template stock (or multiple layers) to handle it because you need to plunge to expose the bearing. Then if that doesn't get you deep enough, you might have to remove template stock and/or change bits to something thats a better length. There is certainly a time and place for both templating systems to exist :)

I'm wondering since it's relatively easy to move around whether it's possible to use this drill in a similar way to a magdrill? For example, can you place the drill on top of a large sheet of MDF, position the laser onto the desired location, and then drilling through the center of the drill base and onto the workpiece?
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight Ай бұрын
I upgraded my drill press to a Nova Viking, so I don't have this one on hand to check - theoretically "yes", practically might be a bit trickier. Yes, can absolutely drill through the table as its just aluminium. Or you could theoretically rotate it out of the way if you could clamp/otherwise secure it, though I believe there is a key that forces it into one orientation. You could grind/file that off so it rotates freer. The laser *may* need readjustment for pinpoint accuracy through the table
@Michael-AUS
@Michael-AUS Ай бұрын
@@TheWoodKnight Yes, the possibilities with the Bosch drill press seem to be there if people are prepared to make the adjustments/modifications that are needed. Good choice re: Viking. Expensive, but worth it I think.

Paul, I've got a Hare & Forbes bench drill press like the one you once described so eloquently as "total crap" and are thinking of changing to something with variable speed. Are you happy with the Bosch and its accuracy? How's the run out? Is a 10mm hole 10mm or is it 10.1mm? Enjoyed the video BTW as I always do.
@TheWoodKnight
@TheWoodKnight 4 жыл бұрын
I lack the proper equipment to measure proper run out, so I can't give you measurements there. I'd just need a dial indicator for that, right? Subjectively, its better than the Hafco drill press *I* had in terms of runout (and other things). Last time I was in at Hafco, their newer drill press models looked considerably sturdier. I've got no idea on Carbatec/Timbecons home brand drill presses, I'd assume they'd sit in a similar boat. If you want variable speed without belts, the 'cheapest' model seems to be the Nova Viking for $1600! I'm *extremely* happy with the drill press - I still wish there was a 'bosch blue' model with maybe a bit more swing, bit more torque for the stupidly large forstner bits - but otherwise very happy for my use!
@WasimBarri
@WasimBarri 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheWoodKnight Yes, I have seen the Nova Viking and it is amazing but at $1600 I'm not so sure. The Carbatec and Timbecon's bench drill presses aren't variable speed so its basically the Viking or the Bosch and like you I wish the Bosch had a "blue" model which would fit perfectly in the market. BTW an inexpensive dial indicator is very useful for not only checking run out on your drill press but checking slot/blade alignment on your table saw and helping square fences on cross cut sleds
