In this tips video, we look into chemical/cold blacking, and also discuss other methods of blackening steel. I also show which product I use and demonstrate how to use it.

Cheers Jon, another interesting video. I've had mixed results with HyBlack from youplate. From what you've said I think inadequate degreasing may be my problem. They sell the solution in small quantities, so not as big an outlay for just experimenting with. Steam / rust bluing is also on my to-do list, but that list only ever gets longer!
@jonsworkshop
@jonsworkshop Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. Degreasing is absolutely fundamental to good results, they need to be absolutely spotless. Even dust particles cause trouble by trapping air bubbles meaning the product doesn't touch the surface in small spots. Cheers, Jon

Good morning Jon, excellent video! Great timing, i am just in the process of making a lot of tooling for my flypress (punches/dies etc. This will be a perfect solution to stopping the surface rust while on the storage shelf in between uses! Thank you Jon. Regards Tony.

I think a safety sheet should come with the Guinness too. I have seen too many friends make mistakes after consuming copious amounts. Especially at closing time of the bar. LOL!

Gday Jon, great video, I’ve never been a fan of the look of blacken tools, I prefer the shiny look but here I don’t have much issue with corrosion thankfully, the product you use certainly works well, top job mate and make sure you keep the blacking solution up to the stomach lining, cheers

Cheers Jon, Good one ! One precaution on anything that's been chemically blued or color case hardened.... Evaporust or similar products will remove the coloring, since it's a form of rust. Found out the hard way.... ATB......

Hi Jon, just saw the price! I use potassium nitrate, aka salt petre, melted in steel container and get a nice deep blue, cheap here in Philippines but probably on the naughty list of chemicals in UK. As an apprentice 50 years ago we used it for blueing our projects.
@jonsworkshop
@jonsworkshop Жыл бұрын
Hi Willem, thanks for the comment. Yeah, saltpetre is not a thing over here nowadays. Price isn't too bad really, £25 for a litre that will last about 10 years = £2.50 a year to protect all your parts etc. Cheers, Jon

Excellent video. I'm with you Jon, and prefer chemical cold bluing. I use Phillips cold Blue, 1:3 mix. The bottle does have all the warnings on the bottle. Very harmful chemical. I wear rubber gloves and safety glasses and a face mask. Although I admit I didn't wear the mask in my video so I could talk about it, but that's the only time. Promise. Cheers Nobby

Hi Nobby, thanks for the comment. Yes, it is nasty stuff, sometimes when I have been doing a lot, or big parts, I have seen vapour coming off the top of the liquid. Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon, when I first saw the Guinness I wondered if the level would go down during the video. I have done a lot of hot bluing over the years (e.g. heating the items with a torch then quenching in oil). That works great and the main reason I did not use cold bluing solutions is that they are so expensive in NZ. But, I recently found a 1 liter bottle of Birchwood Casey Perma Blue Liquid for a really good price so I brought it. I presume it is similar to the product you use. I have used it on a few parts and it does make a good finish so I am happy with it. Yes, it is really strange that your bottle does not have and warning labels on it.

Hi Jon,…I will try the re-using of the chemicals.Always used new stuff for some reason.I never seem to get a good result on threaded areas must be the cleaning or lack of it😅

Hi Robert, thanks for the comment. Nothing to lose trying, might not work with all products. Threaded holes need a lot of work to degrease, brake and clutch cleaner and a brush work well. Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon, you are absolutely correct that the product should carry the GHS chemical hazard symbols that are on the safety data sheet (SDS]. If not Caswell are in breach of the GB Classification Labelling & Packaging regulations. You can report this through your local Trading Standards Office. I would have tried their products but unless they get their act together I’ll avoid them.

Hi Tony, thanks for the comment. Yes, it definitely seems odd. I would expect it from something imported but not a UK product. To be honest though, even if the whole bottle was covered in warnings, lots of people just ignore them, they are primarily there to protect the suppliers, not the users as sad as that sounds. Cheers, Jon
