In today’s episode, I follow up with Lukas Fritz, the founder of Filmomat (www.filmomat.eu), and my good friend Jules, who founded BOBACH (www.bobach.org) in the meantime.
We had featured the FILMOMAT a while ago when it was still a side project of Lukas while doing his PhD in chemistry. Since then a lot has changed - not just in terms of how the FILMOMAT works but also which other products are in the company’s portfolio by now. I sat down for an interview with Lukas to get a better understanding where FILMOMAT currently stands and what is coming up.
Jules met Lukas in the course of our production back then and the two immediately took it off. Jules is a model builder by training but picked up all sorts of skills in the course of his career and by constantly following his interests on the side. He turned this unique set of talent and interests into a company of its own: BOBACH. The company manufactures film photography and camera accessories which are machined from high-quality materials and refined to the highest standards. Jules always sets out to create products that are actually needed in the film community and typically solves problems he encountered himself.
For instance, he created high-quality masks for the famous Fuji Frontier SP3000 scanners that increase the scan area and allow professional labs and ambitious amateurs to quickly switch between different formats while retaining the same basic mask setup. While the original masks are increasingly hard to get and become ever more expensive, these mask sets not only improve on the original but are also widely available. This extends the longevity of successful products such as the Frontier.

Thank you for this enjoyable video! May I please share an idea with Jules for another product I think could benefit from “manufacture of the highest quality”? With film prices going higher we desperately need a new bulk 35mm film loading machine that offers high quality construction and tight tolerances. All the the loaders available today are old designs-plastic, fussy to use, prone to light leaks in some cases, and inaccurate with respect to how much film remains in the loader and how many frames have been loaded into the canister. An updated design would also include a cutter to cut the appropriately shaped leader into the end of the film that remains outside the canister- either short as for modern cameras or long leader for older Leicas etc. Thanks again guys - every video is a winner!

Good to see that entrepreneurship is still alive in Germany. I would be very interested in the new panoramic back for the Hasselblad.

It's exciting to see new designers putting their creative skills to work for film photography. I, myself, barely know which end of hammer to use, so I am in awe of individuals who understand such matters. I love my mechanical cameras and darkroom equipment, some of which I have had since 1972, when a gently used M4 came my way. Congratulations, vielen grüße, and all best wishes to Lucas and Jules and you.

The pano back looks sweet ... There is probably not enough space to achieve true Xpan format. Price will determine whether it makes more sense to just crop 120 - as long as one is not keen on shooting 135 exclusive film stocks. A rewind function would be awesome. Relates to the new project: film scanning vs enlarger. Should I wait with buying into a Negative Supply kit? 😂

I came across Filmomat just yesterday, and today watched your older video on it, and then one right after that. I share @BeingWolfy 's sentiments exactly. Currently my analogue workflow doesn't actually include processing film, but I am now thinking about the Filmomat and whether this might allow me an end-to-end home process that doesn't take up quite as much time as I had originally thought it would. (And, on an entirely separate and unrelated note - I like the new eyeglasses.)

Remarkable work! I really look forward to the upcoming projects, and wish Lucas and Jules success with their ventures. Perhaps an integrated develop/scan mini lab might be in their future? Regards, Chris

Tell me more about the Hasselblad Pano back! As a 500 and XPan shooter I could leave a whole camera at home! 😅 if you need a tester ...
