In the Ep01 I manage to get the 1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ Started. It nocked badly and the engine sounded terrible when idling. In this episode I try to diagnose the engine knock, fix if possible and reinstall the fuel system to get the Jeep running off its own tank.
Its getting close to driving and I have possibly got some tires to go on in Ep03.
Thanks for watching!

People have been asking me why all my life.since I started calling it a hobby instead of another project, they seem to get a better understanding of me. It really doesn't matter what that project is. It's just more satisfying than counseling.

Some of the most realistic backyard wrenching on KZfaq. Humor at the expense of Samantha and aunt Edna, some cussing and some "temporary" repairs. You really got lucky with the bolts and not having to drop the transmission, nice work.

@@WorkshoptoWildernesskeep an ear out for those bolts if you ever get a knock again. I had mine torqued to spec and they backed out after a few months. Little loctite and torquing by feel fixed it right up! Also keep an eye out for the transmission front pump seal, when my torque converter got loose it hurt the seal and I found out about 3 hours from home in the middle of nowhere.

14 years sitting on a Renix Cherokee. You, indeed are a brave man. Word of caution on all jeeps of this era, change the harmonic balancer immediately so you don't crater the engine. The rubber dampener between the steel pully and hub doesn't age well and when it come apart, it's ugly. Renix and vacuum go hand and hand. Chase all of the vacuum lines, especially, the 90 degree elbows. A leak anywhere will cause more issues than you can diagnose. It's pre HO (1991) so don't expect super performance but it is the AW4/inline 6 and both are pretty bullet proof with standard "jeep" maintenance. Also sounds like you have an idler pulley ready to give up the ghost. Change that along with the HB and the serpentine at the same time. Make sure you use the right temperature thermostat or the engine will coke up like you saw in the valve cover. These engines are designed to operate at 210F. Anything, especially lower, will present short and long term issues like you are seeing.

Looking good keep up the great work, yes a good balance of work life is very important i have been married 3 times because the projects and hobbies previously took over very exspensive lesson learned😂😢. Had 2 of these over the years in Colorado and lots of fun in stock form with decent tires. Rust killed the first one and second gave way for the mobile service truck that was needed for work. (Regret selling the second 😢)

I was a skeptic when I first saw the Renix's condition, however you are doing an awesome job! I don't see many Renix XJs in Australia, so this is an interesting repair to watch! I am really interested to see what you do with your bedframe in the back of it, if you do go down that route. My partner and I have completed trips up to 6 weeks long sleeping in the back of our XJ on a home made bed frame / drawer system. I am 175cm tall and she is a little shorter. However its just long enough with the seats forward to still be comfy for the both of us. We have managed to fit a 67L water tank, 110amp hour battery, 2000 watt inverter, solar regulator, 37L fridge, air compressor, a pull out drawer, recovery gear, spare parts, considerable tool kit, axe, shovel, 6x small bags for clothing and toiletries, two pairs of shoes each etc. and enough food for 7 days in the drawer system, under the mattress with spare space for unexpected items. On top of the mattress, when we are mobile, we put the chairs, table and the enclsure tent. Basically anything that doesn't need to be in the car when we are sleeping. We also made an aluminium roof rack with a lockable aluminium box for dirty items so they didnt stink the car out. (Or to carry extra fuel for crossing deserts etc). It also holds our spare tyre, 360° roof lights and solar panel. We also really liked your enclosure idea from the diesel XJ, so we installed an ARB one on our XJ too. We use that area for cooking or getting out from the weather. Not that you asked haha, but my key recommendations for designing a bed frame / drawer system is that you use the lightest, strongest and least amount of materials with a simple design in mind. We used light marine plywood timber and reinforced with alloy where required before varnishing and carpeting over it. Timber is forgiving and meant I could easily refit different sections as my needs changed. Which I have done many times over the past 5 years. The final considertion, is make the bed frame as low as possible. The more headroom, the better! Also, the lower the bedframe, the longer your mattress can be due to the sloped angle of the front drivers seats. Note, you obviously lose storage space the lower you go. My limitating factor when it came to height was how tall my fridge was. If you would like any photos or ideas, just let me know. Happy to help. I look forward to seeing more of these videos!
