It was the closest thing to a so called WoW killer in my opinion. Some of the best pvp ever in a mmorpg.

out of all mmo's i played i really loved the diversity and new type of abilities i saw in this game. was super fun my first time playing and im currently trying to get all my buddies to play.

Never came close to bieng a wow killer it was all but done a year after launch the closest a game came to dethroned wow was aion at its peak before it was killed by ncsoft and made free to play.

@@CtheDead209-zt8tj That was like reading someone having a stroke, but calling anything a 'wow killer' is a moot point. Tabula rasa was years ahead of its time, and it had a terrible company backing it from a marketing POW. This is why it failed. Aion was just another janky MMO that died with a slew of other MMOs of that era. Tabula Rasa was bold and creative, and it couldve been a one of the greatest games ever if it was allowed the flourish.

WoW copied most of good features of Warhamer Online in its next update, siege engines, fortress mode etc... I played it pretty much until its demise, had pretty much maxed out RvR talent tree what only after playing this fan version I realized really took years to farm trough, but it was enjoyable to farm, I really liked to complete my journal in that game, so I didnt minded farming 10k kills of each race, monster and beast in game to have all listed in there. And than searching for obsucre mini bosses in areas where you would normaly never traverse as there were no quests. I and my friend were able to consistently beat 12+ players public quests or even server events in two person team thinking its normal. But usualy when some randoms joined they were instantly dead while we gathered all mobs in area into one deathball to kill them quickly (I played Bright Wizard and my friend was Warrior Priest) with aoe spells. Ahh and sieges of main cities, they were so much fun both in offense and in defense. Seeing hundreds of players charging toward you its really great, but in that time and age it meant huge lag and low fps as it was too big scale on usualy PC configuration of that time :). Ahh and still have like 5 collection ediiton boxes of it from friends who quit playing before me.

I agree, great content. However controllers on PC put you at such a disadvantage on most games. Razer Orbweaver is my answer for anyone wanting a controller type option without losing the mouse and keyboard precision.

Heya there! Thanks so much for making this video, I'm a long time player of the server, so I'm really glad it's been getting so much traction. Just a heads up, if you wanted to disable the MMR chat spam - right click the chat tab, filter, and then disable ch 9. Also for the "controller" feel, if you're still going to play the black orc, you can try out the Plan B addon. It helps with cycling through action bars between your "plans" mechanic, so you don't need to have so many key binds. It's obviously not a controller, but it can help cut down on the number of keybindings.

Have never been a fan of controllers. It's the main reason I don't buy/play consoles. I like using a keyboard and mouse. Just my personal preference, not saying it's better than using controllers.

Mouse and keyboard is superior to controller. Which is why you almost never see games that have launched on both PC and consoles that are PvP focused. Be cross platform between PC and Consoles. It would be unfair to the console players.

I LOVE WAR MORE THAN ANY OTHER MMO AND MOST NON-MMO GAMES TOO! I still have my WAR shifts and I wear them regularly around the house, 10-15 holes in each. I had these shirts at my first job almost 13 years ago... and I still wear them weekly.

The lag will frustrate you as its in some shitty European country expect a 300-500 ping you cant fix it its because of server location not worth playing at that ping.

This very much reminds me of the unexpected Return of City of Heroes via Homecoming. I tried a bit of Warhammer Online on friends back in the day, but at the time I couldn't afford another sub as I was playing WoW and then City of Heroes during the time. I will have to check this out.

I started playing the last weekend again and after a few hours I was back in the world. Yes the graphic, animations are lacking when you look at FF14 but I really like the gameplay and the world that was crafted

Just did a 100 vs 100 open world RvR session in Ekrund last night and it was awesome. Not even a shred of lag; while I know first hand that the WoW classic servers would have buckled if that many players were together. I'm convinced if they re-released WAR today with updated graphics it would be a success.

I still have the CE box in my closet for the live game. Playing casually in RoR has been a great nostalgic trip that I have been taking a few times a year for the last few years. Great for that quick MMO PvP fix. Surprised it's flown under the radar so long. Thankful it has not been C&D'd yet. I'll look for you guys in the lakes! :)

I really miss Age of Reckoning. If you played it, you may have known me as Craiven (Witch Hunter), Heroux (KOTBS), Khonflict(Warrior Priest), and some other toons. I was rather torn when they ended it. Is it really back with all tiers open? Not just tier 1?

Eso is cool with controller, one of the best Imo. Has a pretty high player skill ceiling because of blocking, dodging, animation canceling, and line of sight. Check it out!

The server for this is based in Europe so if you get serious with this you might want to pick a class that the latency wont screw over.

There was talk of Skaven being added as a pseudo NPC race, I was so interested in that. Basically they could "incurse" occasionally and players could sign up to play as an NPC temporarily for rewards.

Trying out this game for the first time and it is a hidden gem... there is really something magical about this game and everything oozes with character. It was ahead of its time and I think between the combination of what was learned from the live game, what was learned from the private server changes, and what can be learned from other MMORPGs over the years means there is a version of this that if remade would be very successful; not many MMOs focus on PvP and don't have the kind of vision for it this game has... in almost every other game the PvP is an afterthought. If you combine that with sandbox elements and the type of dungeons and raids you would see in games like WoW you would have an absolute MONSTER. You want to take it even further? The PQ system was ahead of its time. Look at RIFT or GW2; this idea of dynamic events in the world could be expanded upon. If the events are much larger, take much longer (some even up to a month), and have a very long time until you will see that event again, eventually with enough of them you can create a world that feels alive and ever changing; no one has accomplished this yet (other than arguably a full sandbox game like EVE that relies solely on player action) and it would be a massive achievement for the genre. Right now these events feel like a theme park ride that just starts over again... it can become so much more. For Warhammer this leads naturally into large scale battles with actual consequences and territory being controlled. To this end, look at the ideas that Ashes of Creation are toying with. Maybe not the exact implementation (that will remain to be seen) but the underlying philosophies of their systems are frankly revolutionary. The idea that actions players take in the world have a very real and permanent impact on the world, and that they might have conflicting interests which would lead to conflict (the "node" system). The idea of caravans and that a player who only enjoys grinding and professions now cares about what a PvP only player does is brilliant. You can take many of these underlying philosophies and still end up with a very different game. They could be realized into systems in any way you can imagine... its how they interact and spur the players into action that matters most. We've seen so many MMORPGs come and go over the years. Devs know the pitfalls to avoid (custom engine is a must, get a restraining order against EA, etc.). The industry is just such a dumpster fire right now I don't know who should/could handle such an ambitious project.

I only recently started playing return of reckoning, I did miss the game and didn't know about the revival of it. But in the few days I've been playing I've found the same as with Star Wars Galaxies that is also run by fans now, when problems are found like heavy server lag, they dont wait for hours or days to resolve it like with the games when they were live, they immediately get on it and solve it. Regarding an mmo mouse, it is really a good investment imo, I actually bought my first one back when warhammer online was live and I use mine for basically all my PC games, they are really nice to use (I am kind of a sucker for razer gear, so of course I got the naga).

I played from 2008 on launch day until they shut the servers down, I recently came back to playing again on ROR. It always made me wonder why Mythic, arguably the masters of 3 faction RvR gameplay, didn't build the game around 3 factions (Destruction, Order, Dogs of War) as a population balancing measure, was it their own idea to follow a more "WoW" style 2 faction system or did that direction come from EA or Games Workshop? The lack of a steady stream of content also hurt it at the time; the high level dungeons had a lock out, usually 2-3 days, so if you were bored of RvR and scenarios it's not like you could do dungies with the lads to pass the time till you got the itch to fight again. The harder PQs in the tier 4 zones also didn't have very good loot for the effort involved so that dissuaded people from doing that content. When Land of the Dead opened up it was a godsend, fresh PQs, new lairs chock full of cool boss fights and mechanics on top of it being a pvp zone once the other faction gained access(lair invasions, fights and sieges of the warcamps, good times). If Mythic had been able to deliver more stuff like Land of the Dead through the games life cycle I think it would have lasted longer or even still be in operation now as a F2P model. There was a whole host of minor issues that built up to make things pretty bad at times and the more I dwell on it the more I think WAR could have used something like an FFXIV overhaul. I'm happy with the efforts of the guys running and developing Return of Reckoning, and I'll keep on playing, but I still can't help thinking "what if...".

I remember playin live version on ati x800gto, (256mb vga) I had to drop rvr after hittin t4. my pc wasnt good enough and I was a poor student. a few years later I came back with my new pc just in a few months, servers were down :( I wonder how would it be now if the game was alive like wow. how many new lands, bosses, classes tiers etc would have been added?

It sucks to get up and running.... 1. Follow the online forum install guide to the letter. 2. Delete vinyui addons file (not needed for install or play but you'll want it later after it's running) 3. I tried different compatibility modes, run as admin, move folder to desktop and got it running. Definitely worth it once it's going.

I would suggest if you want controller support in any of your games look into JOYTOKEY, it allows you to use a controller with keyboard imputs you can use a controller on anything that usses a keyboard

Oh man. I played this from beta until it's eventual "death" One of my fave MMOs of all time. Loved every minute. Over the years I have downloaded RoR but because I live in Australia, I have heard it isn't a pleasant experience sadly. Otherwise I'd be all over it again!!

My son and I ran a Chaos guild called 'Mayhem' that breached the server limit of 500 members and we had to create an acolyte guild to cope with demand. It's, without doubt, the best MMO I've ever played but it suffered from performance issues at tier 4 and above and the lack of a third faction to keep the RvR edgy. But it was the performance issues that killed it in the end. Tier 1 and 2 were brilliant Tier 3 was disappointing, but after that the game was unplayable.

warhammer ROR was really fun the classes and especially the talent tree system was my favorite you got to actually have some diversity in your talent picks and it also wasn't to much confusion of the talent system like path of exile where the talent system for path of exile is way to much , main thing is though they lost alot of players as well due to the fact so many MMO's where coming out or already out like WOW TERRA etc... so you had people playing those MMO's and never even heard of ROR or to busy with those MMO's.

No it wouldn't worst time to release an mmo is now out of how many that launched only 3 survived..wow, ffxiv, and ever quest. The rest died in a year or 2 and never broke 1 million subs. Amd killed there developers companies.

So I played EQ1, then jumped into DAOC and immediately fell in love with it becasue of RVR. Played for years, all the way past TOA (forget what came next tbh). Then WOW hit and pretty much everyone I played with moved to that. Circa 2004? I remember getting a beta invite and played it early, had fun, but where was the pvp? Where was the faction vs faction. Also, it got called a carebear game a lot because dying really had no penalty. Even with that, we still went off to wow and played for awhile. Then I heard rumors that Mythic was making this game called WAR and it would have RVR instant out of wow into this game. Anyway, all I will say is WAR was good dispute the imbalance, dispute the bugs, becasue RVR, 3 faction RVR, is the best pvp ever made. I loved WAR and was extremely sad when it went down. It seemed so premature. If I am not mistaken, one of the main dudes for this went off to work on SWOTOR (Jeff Hickman?). Matt Firor works with ZOS on ESO, which is why you have Cyrodiil and maybe even the CP system imo and Mark Jacobs is creating a new game called Camelot Unchained that will be basically everything he wanted to do with DAoC, but couldn't/didn't. The point is though the concept, imo, for PVP works until the servers can't handle it. Rumors are though that CU can handle it :)

There was pvp in wow day 1 if you played on a pvp server.... what do you mean where was the fqction vs faction alliance vs horde?.... back in classic av and fighting over farm spots where 1000 times better than this game hence why no one played it 6 months after launch...

@@CtheDead209-zt8tj first of all, people played it for many years not just 6m and specifically 3 factions is better than 2. I was referring to its influences from daoc which btw is also the reason wow even had pvp on launch. They were afraid to do it, but daoc proved it could work. I was there for both and have played wow since the original beta and I played on andorhal, a pvp server. Imo wow pvp was good, but nothing like daoc. War hammer didnt live up to daoc's pvp but it was still fun

I played it when it first came out years ago. I tried the new fan version. It's way too dated for me. Feels very clunky. But it works and it's free.

I am in love with this old game, best pvp battles I ever had. No cash shop, no pay to win items, no panda skins. if you want best armor you have to work for it. I just envy those ppl in a good way for playing when this was released. But you can't play with without addons, it is very clunky .

Such an underrated game. Probably the best experience I had starting an MMO. I was like 12-13 when it came out and although I loved it, I was too immature to handle a grind like this. The classes, races, public quests, cool graphics, and lore are great. I never really liked PVP too much in MMOs and only got really into it during WOW-WOTLK and this game. The only game that can compare as far as interesting classes is SWTOR. I have tried to install this but gave up lol, probably gonna try again

Just make repair in the launcher and install drx to play. I had some troubles while installing it too, but it is much easier to do then it looks like.

I play Warhammer tabletop and played Warhammer Online from start to finish on live. If the game started with the gameplay of the last year it was live the game would still be strong today. Return of Reckoning is ABSOLUTELY worth playing. It is free and the devs that run it keep balancing classes and game play to make it more fun and balanced. I recently started playing and it is definitely worth playing.

Tried it out and I can see why it failed but as a free to play mmorpg without in game shop it is such a cool experience where you just progress your character and adventure with it till the end and then it is a bit min-maxing with your playstile and it is just amazing. It is a bit repetitive with the pvp and with the questing as filler but it is quite fun.

I downloaded and played a bit but its a very social game and I guess im an antisocial mmoer XD still was a fun week or so and the pvp style for it is awesome. Guess im also not as into PvP as I thought i was XD (still the tank playstyle in pvp in this game is awesome did some RvR as a black orc with a choppa running behind me for the guard and that was awesome we just ran in and slaughtered)

You need three factions for a viable PVP game. Mythic understood this which is why DAOC was structured this way. Why they did not follow suit with Warhammer is a mystery I will never understand. This game is a lot of fun though. I would say it really shines from 1 to 15. You can hop on any class and compete in the scenarios. I found the endgame a little less thrilling. It amounts to zerg PVP in ORVR. Despite the large number of players, the actual fighting can be quite sparse. A lot of time will be spent travelling from one point to another. Fortress sieges, City sieges are entertaining the first or second time you have do them, but like all things, less so as you rinse and repeat. It is PVP centric, yet the original developers invested a lot in PVE.

I think so. You could even have factions that aren’t player base add a level of threat in the game to help keep some balance. And then have factions alliance against an overwhelming powerhouse

My question is: "Why compare this to FF 14?" This game was made by the same company that made Dark Age of Camelot, which has still the best RvR-PvP System out there, even in 2020. But EA took it over and it went rapidly downhill :-( I played DAOC and Warhammer Online at the same time, like many of my guild did. The problem was, some hated the PvP because they expected more quality from the DAOC-Creators. Some liked it but aren´t willing to pay for 2 games a monthly fee and some liked it and played both for some time. Sooner or later the vast amount of players returned to DAOC and Warhammer died pretty fast. My brother found this version and we started instantly to play it :-D Back then i was a big fan of it while he quitted after 1 run in nordenwatch. It was a bit different than back then, but we both like it :-) Hope they keep it alive

For me the comparisons come with the fact those where the games I were playing, and FFXIV won out for me due to many final fantasy factors. But I wish I stuck with this game back in the day.

3:01 FF XIV, is about as archaic as you can get, in terms of gameplay. It's no surprise it will work well with a controller. Any modern, properly designed MMO, would be a clunky mess with a controller.

I enjoy this game. It's a little janky but the setting is cool the classes are cool. You can pvp right from level 1. I'd say give it a shot since theres nothing to lose.

I recently joined Return of reckoning, but I find many of the AI is just plain stupid. They attack you sideways and sometimes even with their back facing you. I don't remember the original being like this. I am grateful for being able to play this again but this issue is ruining it for me.

The only thing that held and killed it? That purple bar, right there. Really, whoever designed that...shouldn't design anything ever again. Tome of Knowledge, PQs, Defensive Target, Guard, Tanks with body block etc...all fantastic, but that purple bar! Gah.

The game was always a good game it just had terrible and I mean terrible performance for most players because it was rushed to market way before it was ready. I actually did a new build just to be able to play it and it still was plagued with bugs and performance issues. Fast forward to today and it’s a really fun and functional game it seems. Just started playing it in the last week as college shut down due to covid-19 and I’ve finally got time to do nothing. Seems worth the time so far.

if you play on that return of reckoning server, you got to remember the sever is very unbalance, destro win cap is close to 99% , melee rule the sever, healers are imortals, classes like wh/we are nerf so hard that they have no boost, classes that specializa in killing mage SW/squid are nerf so hard that you cant even get hp to 50% on someoane... just unbalance..

Switching from controller to keyboard can be a bit overwhelming , personally I prefer a keyboard, so many more options, controllers are limited except if u macro everything, I say play with what ever your more comfortable with ya little Git....Waaaaaaaaagh!!!!

In no way is a keyboard ever going to be as comfortable as a controller ever... cant lay on the couch and play with a key board and mouse which is why my gamming pc is only used for mmos nowadays..

Dude... Good luck playing this game on a controller.. Controller-support is what's killing gameplay in games, mostly RPG's because it *SEVERELY* limits the amount of skills available to the player. Just look at ESO, it's got controller support and has a maximum of 5 skills.. in an mmo.
