In Shotokan, you have to be quicked, precised, focused, and have a right timing and some feints to set your power punch. The best point to punch is the nose. If you miss it you follow up with other techniques using kick like front kick which I find it effective based from my experience. Don’t blink and never hesitate the moment you decide to attack, after assessing your opponent. Ozz.

Exactly as I remember it in early 80's in the UK. I remember Neil Fagan fighting, just a little bloke who used to have a wicked roundhouse that caught people off-guard as it started as a front kick lol. Then how about Joe Tierney - another pocket rocket. The Sikh lads were brilliant with their legs - I got whacked a few times lol. Respect to all who participated. I wasn't that good and injury stopped me after my brown belt but still I have many great memories thanks to Tony Quinn who lugged us lads and lasses around the north of England for tournaments.

Karate Training has changed. Started out in the mid 50s in a Church Basement. Trained in other schools as well. With the training regimen in those days, today it would be called child abuse. Never wore any kind of padding or protective device anywhere on my body, whether training or in competition. These days I have seen some martial arts tournaments where the kids are wearing like a padded body suit almost. Things have definitely changed.

"Karate Training ... in the mid 50s in a Church Basement." dude ur a friggin DnD/ RPG Monk !!! i trained sort of "the last years" of old school Karate too. still keep le spirit and some hard training drills. no gloves, pads of helm when i teach. folks gotta learn control and "consideration" for the oponent. so stopping right before touching is the goal.

If this was under WUKO rules (which it probably was for that era), what you are seeing is "semi" contact not full contact. The term "semi" has nerfed over the years . I used to go to the semi contact tournaments when it was Liverpool freestyle vs Birmingham Lau Gar vs TAGB plenty of knock downs and express dental work back then again under semi contact rules.
@claverhouse1
@claverhouse1 Жыл бұрын
It is NOT full contact, it is non contact. Contact meant trying your best to kill the guy not not touching him ;) . I fought Shotokan competition through the 80s and 90s and was in many multi style competitions. We always loved fighting so called "full contact karate" guys because they always hit a lot softer than we did and were easy marks.

This is the karate tournaments I remembered in the early '70's. But you never show what happens when a guy is bleeding in the mouth defeated and knocked out. One tournament before the black belt finals, one of his classmates, secures the defeated guy by the ankles and drags the defeated classmate out. Blond mustaches with blood is an awful color combo. It's one of those tournaments that one will feel glad to be defeated in one piece and standing because you will see how the guy who defeated you get decimated on the next round. This tournaments are bare knuckle full contact with no mouth guards. But I had a groin protector which cushion but not protect your groin from pain when it. I also had a date the next night. These are for the young but now I am old- just crazy with painful shin splints. Beautiful and nostalgic video. Thanks

Old school Shotokan had 12 throws in the syllabus, including what we know as the Pile Driver, from pro wrestling. Wado Ryu was Shotokan mixed with Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jiujitsu. Yoshin was one of the major samurai jiujitsu systems, and a major contributor to Kano's development of Judo, and a minor contributor to Aikido.

At this point in history, all of these guys had watched The Karate Kid, while sitting in a movie theater. Afterwards they went home and practiced all the moves they learned in the movie to become what you see here. This type of tournament could not be sustained. Not long after, full body pads were required because everyone was getting hurt and could not fight on. There was no clap, rub friction hand healing technique at the time because karate sensei's had failed to learn the technique from Mr miyagi because they thought it wasn't '80s Worthy.
@schoney1
@schoney1 Жыл бұрын
hehehehe... not really but close. pads were as much to not injure your hands. An injured student doesn't pay next month's fee. the Okinawan instructors decaffeinated karate way back when because American students were soft. They trained hard and learned through the pain. They softened it for much the same reason... the fees ($$). However, there we some that did not and taught you to harden your hands, body, legs, feet,... not only to not get injured, but to weaponize your and armor your body. But that's too much pain for those who just want to "play karate" today. And guess what, you can sell pads to your students ($$$) this mid 80s video is another transition to more and more "Rules" that followed the pad thing... no more grabbing (korean styles didn't like the okinawan styles grabbing them)... no more fighting on the ground (used to have 3-seconds to score)... later it was mandatory head-gear (I hated that... messed with my peripheral vision... and of course the pussfactor). the '60s, '70s, '80s fighters were the last of the thumpers... now its tag, blackbelt factories, gymnastic-scream-dance, and they all claim to know "the secret". BTW - Karate Kid we laughed at... but it grew a lot of class sizes, sold a lot of uniforms... and sold a lot of pads. ($$$$$) (it maybe even sold some paint and car-wax)
