His key strokes like forehand smash, loop, block and serve which are the foundation of any good player were world class. His strategic and tactical sense also made the most of his game . his ability to anticipate and read the game was second to none. He even used to gauge the wind conditions at tournaments so that he knew which end be could hit slightly harder. His backhand may of been average by world standards yet all of the aforementioned easily compensated for that only weakness. He was simply a sporting genius!!! LONG LIVE THE MOZART OF TABLE TENNIS!

Most players soon got overwhelmed by Wang Liqin, but Waldner is far too good for that. Doesn't let Wang play the game he wants to, and those Waldner serves are lethal. Wang clearly struggled with them, as demonstrated at the end of the first game. His returns are all over the place.

It doesn't even matter because with all the rule changes they crippled creativity out of the sport.

Well Mefisto .Thats just Chinese incompetence. i lived in China for a year as a student and when i graduated from a mandarin language class i got my certificate which had my details written down besides what i had accomplished and it stated i was from Japan as opposed to Australia where I am from. In China you experience this sort of thing on a regular basis. Everywhere you go you will find mistranslations and incorrect symbolism etc. Then again it could be some sort of inside Chinese joke.

Its amazing how Waldner used to trick other players with his serve. Wang Liqin became world champion multiple times after this match.

Haiman's TV Waldner was a true talent and genius. His forehand loop ,topspin and serve were world class, however, his backhand was average by world standards but he made up for that with superior tactics and strategy. He was a player who knew how to use what skill he had to the utmost of his ability. The way in which he approached the game was second to none. He would stand in the competitionand halls and throw the ball high to gauge wind/draft conditions gauging which side it was preferable to play from and if one side had more wind resistance he knew he could hit a little harder. He also knew the games of every top frequent opponent right down to what they were likely to do at certain key stages during a match. You will notice in this game he tried to keep the points short and quick as he knows WLQ is one of the best rally players in the world. He was also a master of psychology knowing when to break a players Rythm or speed up between points. A true master and credit to the game. Also probably the greatest player whom had ever lived. One of the Australian players who at the time was ranked in the world top 200 said he felt like a beginner when he played him.

His backhand topspin might not have been world class, but he made up for it with an unparalled backhand block.

@@dickn.ormous1064 yes I agree with you re his statergy re his backhand. Yes that is true that weak backhand players do that to set up their forehand however I was commenting on his strengths and weaknesses in general. I was basically pointing out that if he had any weakness stroke wise comparative to his other strokes it would undoubtedly be his backhand. Thus your reply actually affirms my point in that the statergy you pointed out is used by backhand weak players as their forehand is their superior stroke!!! Imagine his backhand was as good as his forehand

Waldner must have totally thrashed the Chinese. Probably not one single Chinese could beat him. Waldner was invincible. Probably won all the tournaments he took part. He was not king of table tennis he was the Christ of table tennis
