AND LUCY BRONZE IS SO RIGHT, ISN'T SHE?!? Lioness and England Women's Footballer, Lucy Bronze joins my podcast, 'Reign with Josh Smith' to share never heard before stories from that EPIC England Win on the Women's Euros 2022, opens up about her mental health and calls for greater research into how periods affect female sporting performance after a knee injury sidelined her earlier this year. Listen to the full interview here: hyperurl.co/i4yxt0
In this episode, football legend Lucy talks about the continuing gender inequality in football, especially in terms of research into women’s bodies and how periods can affect sporting performance. Her comments come after she was sidelined in the run up to this summer’s World Cup with a knee injury like many key England players including Leah Williamson and Beth Mead.Currently female players are still suffering knee ligament injuries in worrying numbers and women appear to be four to six times more likely to suffer an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament] injury than male footballers and there is still little being done about this and how it’s linked to periods.
Lucy also talks about how she hopes changing the shorts in the England kit from white to blue will normalise talking about periods and take the shame out of periods in sport, and discusses the sexism she has faced in sport throughout her life. Lucy also opens up about her mental health, the pride she feels for the Lionesses being able to change things in society for women and they have broken down walls to be in spaces where they weren’t previously ‘meant to be in.’ And aren't we so pleased they are shattering the glass ceiling in sport for everyone?
If you love this episode, make sure you check out the full podcast episode - there is plenty more chat and inspiring words from Lucy there - and please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts) I love chatting to you! Love, Josh xxx

Whilst there will undoubtedly be people who disagree with Lucy's point of view, I applaud her for speaking her mind. Why on earth are periods still a taboo subject in 2023??? Women have always had them, we talk to other women about them, so why shouldn't they be discussed openly? No wonder the younger players look up to Lucy, she's a bloody great role model.

I think Lucy's a really great example of how leadership can come from all corners of the team. She's not England captain (because she doesn't want to be, as I understand it) but her confidence and experience and that ability to challenge things is a different type of leadership. I imagine she's a fantastic mentor to some of the new members of this England team going into the World Cup.

Lucy Bronze, you are an inspiration to both girls and boys around the world! I know you are stating that dealing with sexist and misogynistic people has effected your life very little, but the sad part is that it really effects a lot around the globe! we need more women and men empowering young girls to chase their dreams!

I am in my Sixties and a bloke. When I was being brought up I had an older Sister and a Mother. Oddly both were women. Even more oddly, Periods were never a subject that was hidden. It is a fact of life. When I was older and had girlfriends. It may not have been an everyday subject but again I never remember it being a secret. I can give countless times when I was shocked how embarrassed very confident Women have been talking about something that happens every month. It is awful that in 2023 we still have old out of touch people running our sport. I will watch the Women's World Cup. Yell at them if they make a mistake. Cheer when they do something great. Just like I do watching the mens game. It is 2023 folks. HAL has opened the Pod doors. Let's not be embarrassed by it.

I've been enjoying watching the Women's World Cup and looking forward to the final match tomorrow between England and Spain. The matches have been great, from fantastic goal keeping, the longest penalty shoot out ever, plus the promise of a never before champion. Lucy Bronze is awesome, and every time England plays, I hear her name many times during the match. But I don't see what research would be done if men had periods. I see this as an argument of why only women should compete in women's sports, and they shouldn't play against men who claim to be women. I mean, if you are playing against other women, they all face the same challenge, it's a part of being a woman. I don't know if knee injuries are linked to periods, or to other differences in male vs. female anatomy. In any case, men and women are meant to be partners, not adversaries, it says so in the Bible. But best wishes to all playing in the final match tomorrow, no injuries, a good match, and a new champion.

The point is, there needs to be much more funding put into the welfare of female footballers and there is next to no research into women and sporting performance, the theories around men in sport are just placed on them. If you want to hear more about this make sure you check out the full interview on my podcast Reign here: hyperurl.co/i4yxt0 plus there is a whole women in sport series where many athletes talk about the huge gender gaps that remain in sport.

We do, due to a documented gender bias in medicine.
@shelleyphilcox4743
@shelleyphilcox4743 9 ай бұрын
@alexhaynes7220 There is such a sex bias in medicine, they only discovered recently that womens bodies have a higher number of pain receptors in their bodies and they process pain biologically differently to males. This was not discovered before, because experiments were done exclusively using male mice, to avoid any pesky changes in results that could occur from female reproductive cycles. Its a fact that studies are based almost exclusively on male subjects, which means medicine is generally optimised for males, not females.
