Great to see this video Bro. Was bringing back my old memories on this subject. Due to passion,Way back in 2007 in my college final year i did a project on 'Relation between Seam and Swing using different Textile Threads'. Was lucky to visit SG Ball Manufacturing facility for analysis. Astonishing to see how long it takes to make one cricket ball. Great work Bro!! Keep doing🎉

Excellent analysis on vastly unspoken aspects of the game!! Nothing less was expected from you, and now you have consistently raised standards speaking about very interesting tiny nuances of the game we all love!! When you say that the lighter ball travels further, I have a counter-argument on that point that the air resistance can make sure the lighter ball doesn't travel more than the heavier ball. Your points about checking the "condition" of the ball during the game is absolutely on point. Since they check the shape of the ball with those multiple rings, they should check the weight as well. This video should become one of the highest rated videos on cricketing nuances.

Balls will reach the ground at the same time irrespective of the weight due to same g value, unless there is heavy drag friction in air (eg windy days) when bowling against the wind, heavy ball is good (heavy balls will counter drag force) when bowling with the wind, lighter balls are good, thanks for the analysis of cricket balls ash bro 😇

Ash, great video as always- simple and clear explanations! One correction though. At 16:22, you mentioned that a heavier ball would fall faster under gravity. It doesn’t- all objects fall at the same rate under the influence of gravity (assuming no other force). Where I do think there’d be a difference is the energy/momentum imparted on the ball by the bowler, and the bounce/carry of the ball after pitching (where the ball has to work against gravity, and higher mass means less bounce and carry). And the lighter ball is likely to travel further after an edge as the same momentum of the bat is (partially in case of an edge) imparted to the ball- and a lighter ball can be imparted higher momentum upon contact with the bat.

Thanks a lot @srisai1985, for pointing out about the gravity. Actually, this dynamics could be a bit more complicated. Heavier ball could mean more inertia, which means it can hold spinning revs (backspin or forwardspin) of the ball for longer time. A spin stabilised projectile actually could have higher momentum even off the pitch (think of sniper bullets and lesser drag induced on them). This means it could have higher bounce and carry too. I am not saying it necessarily will, I am just saying it could, unless there are other additional forces which can complicate this dynamics.😇

Your statement about a few grams difference in the weight of a bat is very interesting, especially for us who are non-pros. This made me wonder about a lot of other things. Can you please make a video about the "impact of margins" in cricket? * Shoes - how often are they changed? They wear over time and we get used to the wear. And when we change shoes at some point will it make a big difference to the play? Same goes for bat grip. * Run up - how accurate is it between grounds / conditions? * What kind of an impact can a glove/bat/ball change have in the middle of a game? * Impact of the lights when fielding * What is the impact of something moving behind the bowler? Is it distraction or can the ball get lost in the background? * How much do fielders move during a run up? How does that not impact the batsman? * Are the umpires motionless when a ball is being bowled? * How hard is it to bowl to an unorthodox batting stance? Same for unorthodox bowling from batsman's point of view

Very informative Ash. Thank you. I was also wondering why is that only Indian bowlers have mastered reverse swing with SG ball in home tests and not overseas bowlers. Of course Waqar, Akram bowled brilliantly with old SG ball coz they were so good. So were Cairns, Jimmy, Steyn, etc but predominantly only our bowlers bowled really well, for eg: Unesh, Shami, Ishanth, etc. Bumrah as well in few occasions since he hasn't played many home tests. Is it because of the skill of our bowlers or how difficult an art it is to maintain the SG red ball to keep one side rough and the other shiny. If you could shed some light on this please? Cheers
@crustysocks818
@crustysocks818 9 ай бұрын
The SG ball gets scuffed up very easily in our conditions. In fact, the ball gets scuffed up so quickly that I remember Virat complaining in 2017 (not sure which year tho) about the ball losing shape, swing within 5 overs itself. Generally, bowlers from the subcontinent must know how to reverse the ball - that's the only way to bring back fast bowling in our abrasive conditions. So bowlers go through the grind of maintaining the ball's shine from junior level compared to their counterparts from England, Aus, SA, etc.
@GurumurtiNatarajan
@GurumurtiNatarajan 9 ай бұрын
Scruffing causes the leather to open up (opposite: lacquer seals the porosity in leather and also gives a thin layer of protection from scruffing when the ball is hit by the bat/ rolls on the pitch / grass, hits hard surfaces like wall etc). So, it becomes easier for moisture (from players’ sweat/ saliva) to enter the ball and become heavier on that side. Maintaining shine on one side of the seam improves the wobble of the old ball when bowled at good speed

Kookaburra balls changed in 2021 and started helping bowlers more. There is urgent need to standardise the kookaburra ball but ICC simply doesnt seem to care . There has been a major change in 2021 but kookaburra also nakes minor adjustments for ICC tournaments. This process has no oversight as far as Im aware.

Hi Ash! I like the perspective you put forward in the video. Very nice explanation regarding the differences in the cricket balls. For a future video, maybe you can explain more regarding the pink ball and why was it required to be introduced when there were white and red balls available. Maybe it's purpose was for D/N test matches but again we do not see many D/N test matches going on. Also, maybe the think tanks of cricket can decide to gauge the balls based on the venues, for example, humid v/s dry venues, high altitude v/s sea-level venues, etc. Again, your videos are very thought provoking, it helps us getting a good feel of the game even though we are not playing the game at its international level. Please continue the good job!

The main difference between the red and white ball is that as you have mentioned the white balls gets peeled off like paper but in the case of red ball the only one thing goes off is it's shine. In my pov the manufacturer made white ball less durable in comparison to red ball which is only used for 25 overs but not in case for red ball so the material used in white ball allows the ball light and durable for less overs. On the otherhand, due to the longevity of the format the red ball is made in such a way that it remains for long period and the material that gets peeled off is not used for the test format since the ball have to be used for way more overs in comparison to white ball

Excellent and intriguing topic. As you said there are lot of variables involved. Thus, ICC must do R&D and set a standard. Because existing standards doesn't seem to be doing justice to bowlers. The panelists involved in R&D must include Ashwin. Hope Ashwin will take this matter to people who can take actions so that cricket becomes more of a balanced game between bat and ball.

MCC says the ball when it's new should weigh between 155.9g to 163g. So the ball weight is standardized. But the ball weight changes during the match which will not be monitored. Though the shape of the ball is always monitored until the end of the match. You could have seen a ball gauge used by umpires.

Hi Ashwin, A nice explanation and open questions. 1. Why not use ICC standard balls for domestic games? 2. What about the source of leather? Will it be the same for all balls? 3. Why not do a systematic research on the effect of humidity, dew ,etc on the tensile strength, weight, etc of the balls? In Chennai, CLRI(Central Leather Research Institute), Adyar can perform such work. It may help to understand the balls better and also aid in overcoming effect of dew, toss advantage, etc.

16:23 according to laws of gravity, their is no role of mass of an object in determining the time taken to reach the ground. if you drop a 10 kg bar and a 1 kg bar both hit the ground at the exact same time. but the force will vary according to the weight because, force= mass*acceleration.

Also as you said now a days batters getting lot of advantage with bigger bat edges and field restrictions but During the World cup waqar younis said instead of using 2 white new balls for 50 overs upto 25 overs play with 2 new balls and then after that remove one ball so it brings the reverse swing into play at the back end of the batting innings your thoughts on this one.

Consider if the ball weighs 100g (theoretical)..if the batsman swings it won't go above short 3rd man because of less force or less velocity. 2.Consider if the ball weighs 170g (theoretical)..if the batsman swings then also it won't go above short 3rd man bcas of gravity . 3.2.Consider if the ball weighs 156g (theoretical)..if the batsman swings then it will definitely travel easily over the head of short 3rd man.This is mainly due to point of impact that created by the bat coincides.with avg weight of the ball. *Note:.if a batsman can swing double of avg bat swing with 2times of avg heavier bat definitely the ball which is 2times heavier will go over the head ... These are all my observation... By An anonymous engineer ❤

great video but Ashwin is wrong about one thing. weight has no impact on how fast a ball falls purely due to gravity. only the aerodynamics will determine that.

During this 13th edition of icc World Cup match between IND and England, I was curious about powerplay restrictions and I was googling it. At that time, i came to know about ball gauge which umpires would use to check at any point of time during the match. That ball gauge would have Go gauge and No Go gauge to proceed the match with fit ball. In same way, there is upper tolerance and lower tolerance for weight of ball as per rules and umpire would change the ball at anytime if the ball weight does not fit well within the upper and lower tolerance.

Good Analysis Ashwin. I played league cricket in Chennai way back in 70s. The red ball used to be 5.5 or 6 ounces which translates 155 gms to 170 gms. According to my info, Whitehall paint used is purposely made to wither off of quickly and hence shine goes of quickly. We must also analyze the type of leather used for white and red. The quality and thickness for whiteball leather could be the differentiator. It could be that Whitehall contains more cork and less leather thickness. That is why may be the weight seems to be almost identical but white ball depreciates faster due less leather thickness. Your analysis in that direction could be an eye opener. As a very senior and world top class bowler you can raise your voice in an appropriate discussion on the ball selection. Definitely one day and now T20 are more skewed in favor of batsman which is not fair. As a old timer I don't get thrill in watching t20 or ODI as there is no contest between bat and ball. Team batting better only wins. Very good analysis Ashwin.

Hello Ash.. never ever thought there is so much details around the ball weight and the impact that could make to a delivery. Very much informative. Likewise can you also please bring topics such as why bowlers have restrictions in number of overs to bowl comparing a batsman who gets opportunity to bat the entire 20 or 50 overs. Is that to give an advantage to the batsman or to give equal opportunity to all bowlers. If it is latter, why same logic doesnt apply to a batsman??

@ashwinravi99 your analysis is good and covers some variables affecting the condition of the ball. However, there appears to be many many more variables that could easily impact the condition of the ball. Say for example How hard the batsman whacks the ball deforming its internal layers? 2. How much and what should be the quality of lacquer to be applied on the outer surface of the ball? What exposure to sun and moisture on the ground mean to the ball? How many stitches, their width, thickness etc., are allowed on the ball? Is it the same quality of thread used across all balls? across all manufacturers etc.? Can parity be maintained across balls with the same manufacturer? Are all these balls wind-tunnel tested for their aerodynamic properties? How about testing a few balls per sample of productized balls in dry, moist and humid conditions at different simulated game intervals (at 10 overs, 20 overs etc.,) under various conditions of duress (high impact, moderate impact etc.,) ? Can these results be published by ball manufacturing companies so that professionals like yourself can perform at the peak of your potential?

Amazing insight into the weight of a cricket ball and the lack of options for a bowler. Love your videos. Can you please also make a video on the differences in batting and bowling in day night games ? How much of an advantage it is ? Wasim akram made a comment that maybe finals should be day games, keeping in mind day night games look better on TV.

When dropped from your hand, both a 159g ball and a 162g ball will fall to the ground at the same time. Air resistance is what matters.

Informative video Ash anna, but just one thing, At around 16:17 I don't think two objects of different masses will take different times, when dropped from the same height. (Noticed In the Subtitles as well) It will hit the ground at the same time as far as I know from what I've learnt in Physics, and google um reassure pannudhu. Maybe as you said later in the video, some other factors along with the mass can together affect how the ball travels, thappaa convey aagida podhu, adhan I just wanted to say this. Other than that, great work as always!❤

Hi Ash, fantastic video, and something that we have come to expect from you. A quick note - a heavier ball DOES NOT fall heavier than a lighter ball. This was proved by Galileo’s experiment at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, a heavier ball will have a lower velocity after being hit by a bat because of the momentum transfer (= mass x velocity). This will affect the trajectory after being hit. There will also be a difference when they move through the air.
