The timing for this review is a bit... unfortunate, to say the least. The review was already well into production by the time Russian troops started crossing into Ukraine. Suffice to say, my thoughts and prayers are with those caught up in the needless conflict.

Bannon is a character I feel is overlooked. A man who just wants to be the good soldier, read all the books, studied all the right officers but is utterly useless. He tries to be better tho, he throws his life away hoping he can avoid making mistakes, he simply couldn't handle doing another one. When he says he is sorry, it isn't for a specific mistake, but for being Bannon. His father and everyone saw him as a disappointment. His Soviet counterpart instead responds with violence and ignorance. Also the wiki I believe confirms the final Soviet attack is him.

This has one of the best RTS campaigns ever. I still replay this game almost every year. The last missions just give you that sense of desperation. Its an exhilarating experience. This is on my most recommended RTS to play list.

You picked a good game to look at. World in Conflict is one of those rare gems from the days of old that is perfect for people to play even so long after release.

It should be noted that Massive Entertainment started their RTT chops (that's what WiC is, a Real-Time Tactics game) via their own IP called _Ground Control_ where it dragged the tactics genre into the 3D world.

the multiplayer is hella fun if you're playing with good players - its so satisfying making comebacks when it looks like the game is over! the sound and explosions were amazing. great game

I felt the same way as you about the story. Is not bad by any chances but it would be way better in a chronological way, and would make Bannon's death much more impactful.

This game was my first dose of true PC gaming. God such an amazing game. I still remember the characters all these years later

A couple more points from me: I actually like the Half-Life-like style of very sparing song usage. Subjective of course Also the voice acting is amazing, the Russians sound like actual Russians speaking english, NATO forces have corresponding accents. This also applies to non-story characters as in units and air support. One really neat thing I always liked in this game is that the units chatter in their native languages if you zoom into them enough to listen in. Oh and your review made me look for a download of my digital copy for another playthrough, only to find out Uplay made a backflip with a landing on the face in eastern europe. fug

This is one of those games that's just going to be great forever.

Being a native of the PNW made this personal to me when I played it. Parker being a silent faceless protagonist just made it even easier for me to slip into that persona. I think it made me play BETTER actually.

Nice review! it was my first rts i played online. there is still a very small online community keeping it on, although in rarest occasions more than 1 server is on. the campaign was very well made, but the true treasury of this game was the multiplayer, bcs everybody played 1 of 4 roles and you had to play with the others to win (exceot infantry maybe:P). i think it was maybe 5 years too early, it it could have blown up as a major competetive game.

terrain deformation exist and it affects the vision of the units (depending how deep it is) arty strikes and some cas cause small ones daisy cutter/fuel air bombs medium and the large one is the tactical nuke. play multiplayer assault maps then put all enemies and allies on infantry get snipers or artillery and just kill enemies at range (play the defender side) u get alot of support points by doing that and u can have fun playing with the call support. what i like about the game is that most units have farther range than their visual range u dont need your tanks to be near the battle they can stay pretty far as long as u have allies or units spotting for ur tanks. wont be able to see the hidden tanks if when it shoots you can only see the smoke from the shell so u need to be perceptive if u wanna know where the sniping tanks/artillery or snipers are this works with infantry aswell unless u have a scout vehicle u wont be able to see enemies firing from inside the forest or buildings (i dunno its a bit wonky sometimes u see the infantry sometimes u dont)

About the graphics: WiC looked as good as games got in 2007, and every video card review used it as a benchmark. To this day, most games lack small details and will not allow you to zoom in this far. The technology of WiC was incredible and fearless.

Actually, you could propably still get a mutiplayer game going. The whole thing got reverse egineered even before source code got released by Ubi. Look up massgate, their Discord etc They still organize sessions

I picked it up again after I played it back in 2008. Still as good as I remembered. It's a shame the multiplayer is not as accessible anymore, it was a ton of fun

I was hoping for MP or mods.... but if u didn't play it u NEED to buy it! it's amazing.

You didn't give the graphics enough justice, would have been sufficient to compare it to games from the same year, even FPS/TPS games year from the future, like WoT 2011 didn't look as detailed.

I've never been into RTS games nor have I ever been interested by one before. But hey, there's always something for everyone in gaming, and power to those who enjoy games like these. I think the dated graphics of this game kind of gives it its own charm. I don't think any game graphics are necessarily bad because I think they make a game stand out (except the animations, bad and old ones are ones I can't stand).

ubisoft did a spiritual successor under the tom clancy umbrella, Endwar. you call in troops and support by air similarly and theres control points to hold and fortify. its pretty good, the campaign is open and unscripted, youre allowed to lose battles and regroup for next time. it takes place in the future of 2018... nuclear terrorism in saudi arabia cuts off the oil fields, gas hits 18 a gallon. russia as the leading exporter swells its economy and spends it on a massive arms build up. to cope economically and militarily, the eu federated into one nation with a population and gdp greater than the us. all major powers develop a star wars satellite based anti missile shield in response to the nuclear attack. to ensure superiority, the us builds and armed space station equipped with kinetic rod impactors and space marines able to drop anywhere within an hour. eurpoe is angered by this escalation and dissolves nato. a series of terorist attacks raise tensions putting america and europe on the brnk of war, when its revealed russia is secretly orchestrating the terrorists, and posing as them, hijack a european base, hack a laser satellite and have it shoot the last shuttle mission to complete americas space station. america rallies and declares war, russia announces it will support america and invades eastern europe, america doesnt want russia to gain any more so they lauch a deep strike on their fusion test plant starting war between them so its a 3 way free for all and you get to pick a side. from then its an open ended campaign, some missions become available according to the front lines, there are territories, bases and capitals to take and credits earned. units level up unless totally wiped out and can have upgrade purchased. control points on the battlefield give you suppot authorization, the higher each support is upgraded the more you can call in but only if in range of a base. you can give helicopters chaff, tanks can have flamethrowers, riflemen get snipers and camo, engineers can plant mines and call drones artillery can have chemical or mlrs bombardment etc. and if missions become critical, one side will declare defcon 1 and allow wmd on the map but if you use it the enemy will retaliate.

I feel like he doesn't give World in Conflict Mod Justice there are two mod that I highly recommend if you want to download them one of them is called No hope mod and other one is called the modern mod

Great RTS with a phenomenal campaign.

So sad it will never be continued probably...so much potential lost. It will always have a special place in my gamer heart for sure. Salute to all the vererans who couldn't wait for 80 TA's to devastate the enemy. 😊

i just discovered this game. gonna grab it on gog. its very cheap now and it includes the soviet expansion.

It's multiplayer is really good. You should have gone for the community multiplayer, which makes it still playable. (ok nvm you did mention it) Disappointed that you didn't mention that there is also an effect applied when there is too much destruction caused, where it suddenly gets really dark and cloudy About terrain deformation: There is terrain deformation, actual physical. You just didn't use big enough bombs for those. In particular nukes leave huge craters which are not just textures. About music: I guess that's taste. I prefer it the way it is. Sparse use of really good music makes it even better. One game that used to do this in particular which comes into my mind now is Minecraft. Gameplay: It's not really RTS honestly. It's a RTT, real time tactics. It often gets misclassified as an RTS. But I guess you could count it into the same bigger group, RTS. It kind of seems that you haven't played enough skirmish. Even against bots it can be kinda fun... though against other people it's far better. Also there are a lot of mods, including the NoHope mod (which is probably the best one, simply because of all the explosions) You seem to have completely overlooked the special abilities each unit has, an attack one and a passive/defensive one. It's also the key to winning multiplayer battles. Btw, you seem like a good guy. It was a good idea to review this game :)

the story of wic is ... *finger-kiss* uh-uh, just phenomenal.

It's not an RTS, and it's not "new", it's a further development of the ground control series also by massive, with a cold war theme instead of sci-fi.
