This bad boy pushes itself on ice and breaks it with its own weight. It needs refueling every six years. It takes about a week to start its engine, so it's always running. When docked, it hooks to the port city's electric grid so it can provide power while idle. Quite an engineering marvel.

After 34 years in the Swedish Merchant Navy. I have to say when it comes to icebreakers, Russia is Number 1, then Canada as number 2 and Finland as number 3. After that there is nothing and then Sweden comes and then nothing and nothing and nothing again. Just my experience, but I don't know it all. Anyway I have seen Russian atomic icebreakers in action very close, helping ships I have been working on to escape from 1 to 2 meters thick ice as it should have been 1 centimeter, and I am impressed, very very impressed!

Russia needs Icebreakers, Russia doesn't have any major warm water ports... well until Russia annexed Crimea that is. And Russia is also building lots of modern nuclear submarines with very offensive oriented capabilities so it's not like Russia isn't building weapons of war for the ocean either. So no, it's not weird. It's simply the fact of life. The best defense is a good offense.

The hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, the poet, cavalry officer and partisan Denis Davydov wrote beautiful words: "Russia has not yet risen to its full gigantic height, and woe to its enemies, if it ever rises!" Look at this mighty red ship, remember these words and do not look for adventure on your ass. Do not provoke Russia, do not touch it, and it will not touch you either. Otherwise, do not complain that you were not warned.
