I believe I ran into Shane at a Casino in Iowa this spring. Sometime in the evening after spending the day I was walking the floor and seen a face I recognized (from watching pool regularly on KZfaq) but didn't fully realize who it was until I saw his hearing aids as I walked by and blurted out Shane like an idiot, to my surprise he turned around. I found myself with no words and held my hand out for a hand shake and in return I got a smile and a shoulder shrug with two hands full of chips. No words exchanged but very memorable experience I much enjoy

I think the funniest part is that she's going to make it a successful sport. I mean ... people look at pool and think they can do everything Shane or Efren can. They look at anyone who plays basketball and never get that delusion. Just look: Literally EVERY comment is by a "pool player." We'd like her to succeed, but the chances are? I mean CAMEL, with only ONE METHOD to advertise cigarettes on TV still couldn't..? And yet, she's gonna do it on personality? Granted, Earl should've always been mic'd!! But to the uninitiated? Pool looks easy.

I can stream pool and billiard matches on my smart tv. There’s a billiards channel. I absolutely love it. 10 ball, 9 ball, straight pool, one pocket, bank pool, snooker, billiards, bar table pool. It’s great. I started playing pool by sneaking into the two table pool room in my small home town in the mid 60’s. I eventually got ok at the game. Not great, but ok enough for it for it to be enjoyable. Finally being able to watch the pros play on my tv is a real treat. I’m an old man now and my eyes and hands have seen better days but I still get to practice on the 9 foot table I eventually purchased from the man that owned the poolroom I use to sneak into.

chess boomed over the course of the pandemic, and is still riding high 3 years later. I think the right cast of characters, like Shane, and the right formats (speed chess or blitz chess is incredibly popular to watch and play online) like 9 ball instead of 8 ball is definitely the right path for pool.

The thing is, it's good, because it's slow. I love being able to think out the shots with the players, and then understanding just how big a shot is, all in-between when everyone thinks it's "slow" There is still a major game going on. Problem solving and risk mitigation on top of trying to deceive your opponent into setting you up for a shot that he "thinks" you can't take. It's a wrestling match that's happening the whole time, and only high-level thinkers will find that fun.

I've been following SVB's career for years. The guy makes it look so easy, you'd think you can go to a pool tournament and clean up. 😂 Shane has the raw talent, extreme work ethic and humility. He's the man. 🎱

The reporter essentially answered his own question "Can a South Dakota kid help turn pool popular in bars and basements but not in TV into a proper pro sports?" by not even mentioning the greatest pool player of all time, Efren Reyes, at the 1:33 mark. It's like asking basketball fans how Wembenyama can help popularize the sport without mentioning Michael Jordan or LeBron James.

Man i love that theyre trying to make the sport bigger, It needs all the appreciation it deserves. Amazing sport that gets looked down upon because of gambling but it's one of the best aspect of it the thrill when you're playing against a better player that you just have to up your game to his level while playing

You really believe pool gets "looked down upon" (as you say) because of gambling? Gambling is no longer illegal in the U.S. It used to be federally illegal until a few years ago when they dropped the national laws and allowed every state to decide themselves whether its legal. And many states have made it legal. There are even giant DraftKings advertisements right on the courts of professional sport arenas and events. And the gambling live-odds are posted and talked about on national TV before and during the games. Nothing about gambling and sports is a stigma anymore. Soon enough every state will have legalized sports gambling. The government knows how much $ they can make and sports teams appreciate extra attention/viewers from gamblers.

Nobody looks down on gambling in 2023 anymore (unless I suppose its someone they care about and they have a bad addiction). Otherwise ppl dont care if their neighbor or best friend is betting on sports. Cannabis is more stigmatized and "looked down upon" still in 2023 a lot more than gambling is, thats for sure.

I would love for pool to grow in the US. Pool is an easy game to learn, but very hard to master. Seeing it played at the highest level is a pure joy. If it were on TV then I'd definitely watch it.
