Good point, at least before the supercruisers.

Mainz is basically a what-if version of the Hipper, with Nürnberg's guns on it. Yes, she can play that role as well, since she's not quite as squishy as some CLs around this tier due to the hull.

I love my cruisers. You can play this role in some BBs, but it's just so much harder. As long as you can compensate for the lower armour / hp by playing smart (and not getting focused), as well as figuring out how to use the guns optimally, they're pretty dangerous against most things.

That's what I meant with "don't go rushing out and take point". Heavy cruiser maybe, but they're still cruisers :) In a 1:1 however, I'm quite confident to take on a BB, especially if they're obliging to sail into torpedo range.

That's German heavy cruisers for you. Time the BB salvos, get into torpedo range, and shred away. German 203mm AP does a lot of damage, and the armour should be able to hold enough for the kill. Hipper class is fun that way :)

Kurfürst, Yamato and probably CC, although I've only played her pre-nerf. The German BC line is fun as well, except for tier 8, which is dreadful, but then same for the IJN BBs :)

Absolutely. It's the rate of fire, while still having enough penetration to seriously mess with your armour plating. Against a BB, you just need to dodge a salvo every 20-30s, then proceed to burn them in between. Heavy cruisers are a different kettle of fish, especially if they can get close.

Mogami is technically a heavy cruiser, even though what we're getting here in-game is the "light cruiser guns" edition

@@FunandGameswithTerry I have always wondered. It had a similar play style but the lower caliber guns made me not so sure.

Dutch cruisers can play both support and assault. Good AA, sonar, but limited anti-DD capabilities as the line progresses. Aggressive, island-based play is necessary to utilise the limited range on the airstrikes. They're not super-specialised, but I think can fill both reasonably well.

The BCs are in-between heavy cruisers and battleships. In a BC, dealing with destroyers is harder, so you usually wouldn't do the "watch for holes in the lines and clean them up" tasks quite as often. They're more breakthrough ships, relying on situation to bring their firepower to bear. In a BC, I'd be taking point and leading a push on occasion, if the opposition is manageable. In a cruiser, not so much. In a German BB, you can neglect opposition to a degree and just tank.
